Chartered VLCC Makes First Kawasaki Port Call

The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) 'Takamatsu Maru' has arrived at the Kawasaki refinery of TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. The 158,000 dwt tankship was chartered by TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. from NYK Lines, after the company purchased virtually all of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s Japan business. The vessel was built by IHI Marine United Inc. and delivered in June, 2012. TonenGeneral Sekiyu has also assumed the charters of two additional VLCCs — Taiga and Tamba — bringing to three the number of vessels currently chartered by the company from NYK.

IHI to Buy More Overseas Components

According to a May 14 report from Bloomberg, IHI Corp., Japan’s second-largest heavy-machinery maker, plans to increase imports of shipbuilding components to counter a stronger yen. The company’s IHI Marine United Inc. unit plans to buy parts including pumps and motors from South Korea and other nations, said Shigemi Kurahara, the incoming president of the Tokyo-based subsidiary. IHI forecast a 64 percent decline in shipbuilding operating profit this fiscal year to $10m because of the stronger yen. (Source: Bloomberg)

IHI Shipbuilding Unit Fills Out Green Lineup

According to a report from The Nikkei, IHI Marine United Inc. has developed a tanker and bulk carrier that reportedly emits 30% less carbon dioxide than its existing offerings. JFE, IHI to Begin Talks Possible Shipbuilding Merger

Japanese heavy machinery makers IHI Corp. and JFE Holdings Inc. said they have agreed to begin concrete talks on merging their shipbuilding subsidiaries, a move that would create 's biggest shipbuilder. The move comes as Japanese shipbuilders face intensifying competition from regional rivals and , the International Tribune reported. IHI and JFE will establish a committee to discuss the details of how operations of IHI subsidiary, IHI Marine United Inc., and its JFE counterpart, Universal Shipbuilding Corp., can be integrated, the companies said in a joint statement. They will also discuss production details, merger ratios and ways to stay competitive in shipbuilding operations, they said.

Eagle Bulk Shipping Takes Delivery of Imperial Eagle

Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (Nasdaq:EGLE) announced that it has taken delivery of Imperial Eagle, a Future-56 class, 56,000 dwt Supramax dry bulk vessel. The vessel has entered into a one-year time charter tied to the Baltic Supramax Index (BSI), ensuring Eagle participates directly in strong rates in the spot market while retaining the stability of a one-year charter. The Imperial Eagle represents the final of five newbuilds constructed under contract with IHI Marine United, Inc., a Japanese shipyards.

JFE, IHI Shipbuilding Target $6.2 Billion in Sales: Report

Bloomberg reported that JFE Holdings and IHI Corp. will seek to increase sales of their combined shipbuilding units by about 30 percent in five years to fend off competition from South Korean and Chinese rivals. The units, set to be merged on October 1, will target annual revenue of $6.2 billion by 2017, said Shinjiro Mishima, who will be president of the new entity. The company will speed up development of fuel-efficient and cost-competitive ships, including on container vessels, bulk carriers and oil tankers, he said. Combining JFE’s Universal Shipbuilding and IHI Marine United Inc. will create Japan’s biggest shipbuilder, which will challenge larger rivals, including Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest.

IHI Completes Post Panamax Container Carrier

IHI Marine United Inc. has completed construction of the 6,492 TEU post panamax container carrier for delivery to Great River Line S.A. of Panama at the Kure Shipyard on November 29, 2002. The NYK Apollo, first of a series of seven post panamax carriers to be chartered by NYK Line, will be utilized for transport services in routes centered on Europe and Far East. The carrier with a beam of over 131 ft. (40 m) can load containers of nine tiers in 14 rows in cargo holds and six tiers in 16 rows on the upper deck. The NYK Apollo has fixed cell guide system in holds and lashing bridges to enable the containers to be stacked up as high as six tiers on the deck. For reefer containers, 83 plugs in holds and 450 plugs on deck are provided.

Two Killed in Shipyard Accident

According to wire reports, two workers were killed and two others injured earlier this week after falling about 65 ft. to the ground when a 246-ton steel block fell over on a ship under construction in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture. The four were working on the construction of a 90,000-ton containership for a German client at a shipbuilding dock of IHI Marine United Inc., launched in 2002 via the partial merger of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. The accident took place shortly after 9 a.m., when they were trying to fix the steel block to the ship. The block -- 15 meters in height, 16 meters in width and 2.5 meters thick -- fell over the port side of the ship, throwing the four to the ground.

Eagle Bulk Shipping to Build New Vessels

Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., which specializes in dry bulk shipping, signed contracts with the Japanese shipyard IHI Marine United Inc. to build two new vessels for about $33.5 million apiece. Eagle expects to take delivery of the Future-56 class Supramax vessels in the first quarter of 2010. Once delivered, Eagle Bulk Shipping's fleet will number 18 vessels, and 14 of them will be Supramax class, or slightly larger than the more popular Handymax vessels used in dry bulk shipping. The company also said it increased its borrowing capacity from the Royal Bank of Scotland to $500 million from $450 million. The company used $24.8 million from the credit facility as a down payment on the vessels. Eagle Bulk Shipping said more than $260 million remains on the credit facility.

Wärtsilä, IHI Marine Propulsion System Agreement

Wärtsilä, ship power system integrator, and IHI Marine United Inc. (IHIMU) of Japan, have concluded a co-operation agreement. Under the agreement, Contra-Rotating Propeller (CRP) systems developed by IHIMU will be incorporated into Wärtsilä's propulsion solutions used on board diesel-electric driven ships. The co-operation agreement mainly covers the European market, where the environmental demands on shipping operations are becoming increasingly stringent. The IHIMU CRP systems have been installed over a period of more than 20 years onboard VLCC and bulk carrier vessels.

Offshore Wind Farm Project for Stricken Japanese Province

A consortium made up of Marubeni (project integrator), the University of Tokyo, Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, IHI Marine United, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Nippon Steel, Hitachi, Furukawa Electric, Shimizu and Mizuho Information & Research are participating in an experimental offshore floating wind farm project sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. This experimental project consists of three floating wind turbines and one floating power sub-station off the coast of Fukushima. The first stage of this experimental project will begin in 2012 and consists of one 2MW floating wind turbine, the world's first 66kV floating power sub-station and undersea cable.

Wärtsilä RT-flex Engines Achieve 1000 Orders Milestone

Wärtsilä has received its 1000th order for the 2-stroke, electronically controlled, common-rail low-speed diesel engine. The 1000th order will power an efficient Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) tanker being built for JX Tanker Company Limited, the Yokohama, Japan based major tanker company. The 310.000 DWT vessel is being built at the IHI Marine United Inc., Kure shipyard, and is scheduled for delivery in 2014. The engine will be manufactured by Diesel United, Ltd. (DU), a Wärtsilä licensee in Japan.

The Chairman's Influence on Design

One of the most enduring business relationships has been reinforced by the Evergreen Group's decision to entrust construction of an extensive new series of post-Panamax containerships to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The project is distinguished not only by its scale, in calling for 10 S-class newbuilds of 6,724-TEU to be delivered between September 2005 and the end of 2007, but also by the adoption of the 'Greenship' design concept proposed by Evergreen chairman Dr. Chang Yung-Fa. Through its special attention to pollution prevention, the 'Greenship' approach calls for fuel oil storage to be protectively located within the athwartship bulkheads dividing the cargo holds. "We don't want fuel oil tanks to be located at the sides and at the bottom of the ships," commented Dr. Chang.

Eagle Bulk Shipping Signs Two Contracts

Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. has signed contracts with IHI Marine United Inc., one of Japan's shipyards, for the construction of two Future-56 class Supramax vessels. These 56,000 deadweight ton vessels have a contract price of approximately $33.5 million each and are expected to be delivered in January and February of 2010, respectively. Upon delivery of these vessels, Eagle Bulk's fleet will include 18 vessels, 14 of which will be Supramax-class. The company also announced that it has amended its existing revolving credit facility from its sole lender, Royal Bank of Scotland plc, to increase the borrowing capacity from $450 million to $500 million. The financing of the new vessels will not affect the Company's quarterly cash dividend payout.

GE Gas Turbines for Japan's New Warship

ClassNK Approves Minimal Ballast Water VLCC Design

Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has granted AIP (Approval in Principle) to the MIBS (Minimal Ballast Water Ship) VLCC design developed by Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in cooperation with the Shipbuilding Research Centre of Japan. GE Gas Turbines Power Japanese Destroyer

GE's Marine Solutions reports that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second Izumo-class helicopter-carrying destroyer. The new JS Kaga (DDH 184) is powered by four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, and was commissioned at the Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama on March 22, 2017. First-in-class JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Kaga are the largest surface combatants in the JMSDF fleet. Both feature a powerful and reliable combined diesel and LM2500 gas turbine propulsion system, with the gas turbines using GE’s integrated electronic controls.

GE to Provide IHI with LM2500 and LM500 Gas Turbines

GE Marine announced that it will provide IHI, Tokyo, Japan, with LM2500 and LM500 gas turbines for the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force’s (JMSDF) new 24DDH destroyer. The GE LM2500 gas turbines will be equipped with integrated electronic controls. “GE gas turbines already are part of the JMSDF’s 22DDH program. ClassNK, IHIMU, DU, and IBM Japan to Develop Software

ClassNK, IHI Marine United (IHIMU), Diesel United (DU) and IBM Japan have announced they will jointly develop a ship maintenance management system to help reduce ship lifecycle cost. The jointly developed system, which will make use of the latest condition monitoring sensor technology and data analysis systems, will be offered by ClassNK as a cloud-based service to shipowners, managers and operators from June 2013. As ships face dramatically changing ocean conditions, appropriate maintenance and condition monitoring of on-board machinery is essential to ensuring smooth operations.
