Shipbuilding for the Arctic

The Arctic region has a huge potential in terms of unexploited natural wealth and resources, though it accounts for a small area on the earth’s surface. Many countries, other than the eight countries which lay either completely or partially in the Arctic region, are interested in exploring the natural resources available in this region, and for various other economic, strategic and geopolitical reasons. In addition, moving cargo from the west to the east (and vice versa) in the northern hemisphere can be undertaken through the Arctic region at lower cost. For any nation to have control over the Arctic, it will have to establish its physical presence in this region. Such presence can be demonstrated by reaching this ice / water bound zone through ships.

IHC Hydrohammer Supplies Largest Piling Hammer For Seaway

IHC Hydrohammer, part of IHC Merwede, has been awarded a contract by Seaway Heavy Lifting to design and manufacture the S-2500 piling hammer, which is the largest ever built by the company. IHC Hydrohammer is delighted to be chosen as the supplier of this equipment and the order highlights the strong and reliable cooperation that has developed between the two companies over more than 20 years. The order also includes a 6,500mm guide sleeve and other equipment needed for offshore operations in both the oil and gas and offshore wind markets.

Test Platform for Steam Generation Technology

Brownie's Marine Group, Inc. (OTCBB:BWMG), today announced that on May 25, 2012, the Molecular Impact Energy (MIE) steam generation system produced continuous steam without a conventional boiler apparatus. The MIE system was also successfully attached to a conventional double acting two-cylinder steam engine. Developing the test platform to prove the relative energy efficiency of the Molecular Impact Energy (MIE) invention and the eventual integration for the entire marine industry for which Brownie's has exclusive rights, is a key near-term goal of the Company. Robert Carmichael, Brownie's CEO stated, "The test results in this first phase are extremely encouraging.

DNV Finishes Risk Study for Dutch Inland Waterways

The Dutch have a long history of river transport with large rivers such as the Rijn, Maas and Schelde traversing the country. These waterways are used to carry a wide diversity of goods including dangerous substances within the Netherlands and to and from Germany and Belgium. Although accidents are rare, the consequences of ship collisions could be great and DNV has been involved ever since the first initiatives were taken to monitor risks. Their earlier work on the development of a nautical Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) and a methodology to assess ship collisions based on the impact energy is now to be formalized into a Dutch guideline called Risk Analysis Sea and River Transport.
