Ports of Indiana: Building on Success

The Ports of Indiana is a statewide port authority, established in 1963, which operates three ports: two on the Ohio River, one on Lake Michigan. Port officials refer to the three as “America’s Premier Inland Port System.” They cite location, location, location, providing access via two critical freight arteries – the Great Lakes and the Inland Waterway System and proximity to the world’s most productive industrial and agricultural regions. The Ports is the only statewide port authority in the Midwest.

Ferguson, Gibson reappointed to Ports of Indiana commission

INDIANAPOLIS (March 21, 2011) – Gov. Mitch Daniels recently reappointed two key leaders for the Ports of Indiana commission, as Marvin Ferguson and Greg Gibson were each called to serve another term. “Our commission includes some of Indiana’s finest business minds,” said Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper. “The governor did our ports another huge favor by reappointing these two men. Ferguson is the longest-serving member on the board, now in his 19th year with the Ports of Indiana. In the organization’s 50-year history, only three out of 37 total commissioners have served longer.

River Shipments, Status of Markland Lock

Officials from the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a special briefing for the Ports of Indiana Commission on Oct. 22 at the Jeffersonville City Hall. The presentations will be part of the commission’s regularly scheduled public business meeting. Jeffersonville Port Director Matt Smolek will be discussing the current status and economics of cargo shipments moving on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The expected representative from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is Gene Dowell, operations manager for the Markland Lock and Dam. He will be providing an update on the status of the lock that failed on Sept. 27, as well as the salvage and repair efforts that are currently underway. 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct.
