Drone Attack: Russia Suspends Operations at Ust-Luga

Russian energy company Novatek said on Sunday it had been forced to suspend some operations at a huge Baltic Sea fuel export terminal due to a fire started by what Ukrainian media said was a drone attack.The giant Ust-Luga complex, located on the Gulf of Finland about 170 km (110 miles) west of St. Petersburg, is used to ship oil and gas products to international markets. US Hits Iran With Fresh Sanctions

Rotterdam Port Achieves TEU Milestone in 2018

Europe's largest port, the Port of Rotterdam ended 2018 with a total container throughput at 469.0 million tonnes (MT) which slightly higher than in 2017,  which was itself a record year (467.4 MT).Container transhipment was the engine of growth again, with a 4.5% increase in tonnage. Measured in TEUs, the standard unit for containers, the increase was 5.7% and the annual total was 14.5 million TEUs – also a record.This strengthens the position of Europe’s largest container port in this strategically important market segment. Significant underlying shifts were observable in the goods segments.Whereas container transhipment continued to grow at a healthy pace, that of crude oil, mineral oil products and agribulk fell.

Port of Rotterdam Authority to Invest in Port of Pecém

Bahri Tanker NCC Amal Carries Chemical Cargo to China

National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) announced the transportation of the first chemical shipment from Aramco Trading Company (ATC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Aramco that trades refined, liquid chemical and polymer products, via ‘NCC Amal,’ a 45,000 DWT Bahri chemical tanker which left Port of Rabigh heading to China. The shipment, which contains 25,000 metric tonnes of paraxylene (PX) and 20,000 metric tonnes of monoethylene glycol (MEG), marks the completion of Phase II of the Petro Rabigh Company (PRC) project, which was celebrated at a special ceremony in the presence of Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO of Bahri‎, Nasser D. Al-Mahasher, CEO of PRC, Ibrahim Q. Al-Buainain, CEO of ATC, and other representatives from the three companies.

Port of Rotterdam for Ambitious Investment

The solid financial results allow the Port of Rotterdam Authority to carry out an ambitious investment programme, which is intended to help the Rotterdam port maintain its leading position as Europe’s largest port and industrial complex. Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, while commenting on 2017 Annual Report, said that the port of Rotterdam and the Port Authority can look back on a good year. Allard said: “Our times are characterised by increasingly fast-paced developments in a range of areas. In February, the Port Authority already reported an exceptionally strong increase in container throughput, of 12.3% (in tonnes). This throughput served as the key driver behind the port’s growth in 2017.

Allard Castelein Reappointed as CEO of Rotterdam Port

Allard Castelein is reappointed as Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO. He will be serving a second four-year term as CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Castelein (59) was reappointed by the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Dutch State, the two shareholders of the Port Authority, on the recommendation of the Supervisory Board. His new term will start on 1 January 2018. Chairman of the Supervisory Board Rutger van Slobbe: “Over the past few years, Allard Castelein has proven to be the right man in the right place for the Port Authority and the port of Rotterdam in this period of change. Allard added: "Thanks to digitisation and the energy transition, this is a period of major changes for the port. Hans Beele's Mission to Build Sealing Valley

Rotterdam Port Throughput Up by 3.9%

With an increase in throughput of 3.9%, the port of Rotterdam can look back a good first half year. There was growth in eight of the ten market segments. The only falls were in the volumes of mineral oil products and other liquid bulk. In particular, the volume of containers handled (9.3% in TEU, 10.4% in tonnes) was the determining factor for the overall growth in throughput. Dry bulk increased (5.2%), liquid bulk decreased slightly (-1.0%) and break bulk was very much on the rise (10.8%). A total of 238.0 million tonnes of goods were handled in the first half of the year. The market share of Rotterdam by comparison with the other ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range increased from 29.0% (Q1 2016) to 30.9% (Q1 2017) in the container sector.

NextDecade Takes Aim at Texas City for LNG Export

NextDecade LLC has signed lease agreements with the State of Texas and City of Texas City for a close to 1,000-acre site at Shoal Point for the potential development of a multi-billion dollar liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility. Texas City owns almost 376 acres at Shoal Point, while the Texas General Land Office manages the adjoining 618 acres of state land. Delaware River Ship Arrivals Continue Gains in 2016

Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay President Dennis Rochford has announced the tristate port vessel arrival statistics for the first six months of 2016. “On top of last year’s increase in vessel arrivals over 2014 activity, we continue to see steady growth through the first six months of 2016,” Rochford said. According to Maritime Exchange records, 1,234 ships arrived at Delaware River port facilities compared to 1,127 arrivals for the same six-month period last year, a 9.5% increase in vessel activity throughout the port.

Marine Engineering Award for Maasvlakte 2

The construction of Maasvlakte 2 has been recognized by the award of the prof. dr. ir. J.F. Agema prize, which is awarded every five years to an innovative marine engineering work that was designed or constructed by a Dutch party. The prize, the initiative of the KIVI (Royal Institute of Engineers), goes to the entire team of client, designer and contractor, which in this case includes the Port of Rotterdam Authority and contractors Van Oord and Boskalis, as part of the PUMA consortium. The winner was announced on November 10 during the Waterbouwdag (Water Management Day) 2015 in Rotterdam.
