Cargotec and Konecranes on Thursday won EU antitrust clearance for their 4.5-billion-euro ($5 billion) deal to create a global leader in industrial machinery after agreeing to divest some businesses.The companies, which provide road and sea-cargo handling machinery and services to industries, factories, ports and terminals, announced their tie-up in October last year.The European Commission said the companies' remedies addressed its concerns that the deal may hurt competition and lead to higher prices, confirming a Reuters story on Feb.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems has concluded a licensing agreement with Jiangsu Masada Heavy Industries for the manufacturing and sale of hose handling cranes and slim deck cranes for container ships. The license granted to Jiangsu Masada follows similar agreements in 2008 for deck cranes of bulk carriers and in 2012 for deck machinery and steering gears. This further broadening of Jiangsu Masada's product lineup will expand the market share for marine machinery utilizing MHI group technologies in China, the world's largest market for marine vessel construction. The hose handling cranes subject to this licensing agreement comprise three series, with hoisting loads of 10 tons, 15 tons, and 20 tons, which are fitted mainly on MR tankers and larger vessels.

With strong increases in iron ore and other cargo, total tonnage shipped via the St. Lawrence Seaway is up 20 percent over last year. Dellner Brakes AB said it will introduce two new heavy-duty disc brakes to its SKD range that, through a new modular design, are set to deliver more choice and stopping power for large industrial, marine and offshore applications. The new brakes will be launched at Nor-shipping in Oslo, taking place from May 30 to June 2. Designed for stopping rotary motion and statically holding load in large marine vessels and industrial machinery, Dellner’s new SKD 140 brake delivers braking force of up to 258 kN through two brake housings, each containing a powerful hydraulic piston.

Canadian non-resource exports should post healthy gains this year, the country's trade financing agency said on Monday, a development the central bank is counting on to help revive an economy hobbled by weak global energy prices. Export Development Canada predicted the consumer goods, automotive and aerospace sectors would post double-digit growth in 2016 on the back of a robust U.S. economy. Industrial machinery exports should advance by 7 percent, it said. Overall exports are seen rising a modest 2 percent this year, held back by a 14-percent drop in the value of energy shipments. Canada is a major energy exporter and has been hit hard by slumping crude oil prices.

Larson Electronics released a new multi-colored hazardous location LED signal light with a 110dBA audible horn. The HAL-TL-5X10W-C-PA from Larson Electronics is a Class 1 Division 2 hazardous location LED signal stack light equipped with an audible horn and approved for use in hazardous environments where explosive and flammable gases, vapors, and dusts may occasionally be present. This hazardous location stack light is designed for routing traffic in industrial refueling stations and processing status indications in manufacturing facilities. The signal light is equipped with five 10 watt LED lamps, producing an amber, red, blue, green, and white light output.

With the delivery of five Rubber-Tire Gantry Cranes (RTGs) and two Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes capable of handling Ultra-Large Containerships (ULCS) of up to 16,000 TEU capacity, the new 1.3 million TEU deep-water APM Terminals Izmir facility is nearing completion in anticipation of beginning commercial operations in early 2016. VSE Corporation's GLOBAL Division teamed with the U.S. Naval Sea Systems command December 1 at a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the official opening of the Iraqi Navy Ship Repair Facility (SRF) in Umm Qasr, Iraq. VSE helped develop the SRF, which now serves as the Iraqi Navy's maintenance headquarters. The SRF is one of the first fully operational facilities in Iraq as part of the post war infrastructure sustainment. The facility, which was procured as part of a larger Foreign Military Sales case with the Iraqi Navy, will support five different vessel classes. Assisting in the development and management of the facility includes VSE Iraq Team Leader Steve Bennett and VSE Iraq Team Program Manager Hal Jones. "We began work on the ship repair facility in 2010," said Jones.

Duros has been contracted by Supply Chain Services (SCS) to provide service and new equipment for Ports America, the largest terminal operator and stevedore in the U.S. The multi-year contract includes the service of existing rugged computer hardware for optimal performance and the sale of the new Duros 1214 fixed-mount rugged computers. Ports America relies on rugged computers to help manage and track cargo inventory at 50 ports and 97 terminals in the United States and Mexico. The Duros 1214, which is engineered to withstand the rigors of shipping environments, will be mounted onto pick-up trucks and various industrial machinery throughout the ports.

Nantong Masada Ship Machinery Co., Ltd., a Chinese company located in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, to which Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) licensed its marine deck crane technology, has completed production and delivery of its first MHI-licensed product. Delivery was taken by Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., a major local shipbuilder. Nantong Masada aims to increase deck crane production in response to rapidly growing demand arising from a sharp increase in local construction of cargo ships, including bulk carriers.

Solent Coastguard are assisting the captain and crew of a tug and its rock barge after the barge deposited its entire load into the water ½ mile off Bonchurch , Isle of Wight this afternoon. The Coastguard began their communication with the captain of the tug this afternoon at just before 3.00 pm. The barge had begun to list, resulting in the whole of its cargo of industrial machinery, 1,000 tons of rock and a large number of railway sleepers being deposited into the sea on the south west side of the Isle of Wight. Solent Coastguard requested Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team to attend and the Bembridge all weather lifeboat was launched. The Coastguard helicopter India Juliet was diverted from other duties, but was released when it became clear that all the crew were safe onboard the tug.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers released a 60-page technical bulletin Practices and Procedures for the Alignment of Marine Main Propulsion Shafting Systems. The bulletin was compiled by the Propulsion Shafting Panel, Panel M-16, of the Society's Technical and Research Program. While industrial machinery is typically aligned so that the shafts of the driving and driven machines are collinear, this approach is not appropriate for marine main propulsion shafting because the bearings move as conditions change, and because the shafting is never really straight as it deflects under its own weight and the weight of the propeller and other attached components.
