Oil and gas production has started from FPSO Guanabara offshore Brazil, the first definitive production system installed in the Petrobras-operated Mero field, in the Santos Basin pre-salt. Saipem has been awarded contracts for the second phase of the ExxonMobil led Liza development offshore Guyana.These contracts, assigned by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL), an affiliate of ExxonMobil, as the project operator, are in addition to those awarded to Saipem in 2017 for Liza Phase 1.Following engineering and subject to requisite government approvals, project sanction from the joint venture and an authorization to proceed with the next phase, Saipem will then perform detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the risers, flowlines, and associated structures and jumpers. DNV GL’s Tanker Working Group looked at the latest trends in the tanker segment with a special focus on the impact of upcoming emissions regulations at its 31st meeting in Hamburg recently. Some 25 representatives from the tanker industry met with DNV GL experts in the classification society’s maritime headquarters to hear presentations and participate in informal discussions. “The Tanker Working Group is a great place for industry representatives and DNV GL to share ideas and the latest news on regulatory developments, innovations, and the challenges and opportunities for the sector,” said Catrine Vestereng, Business Director Tankers at DNV GL.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has honoured its five best suppliers for outstanding performance in quality, logistics, environmental protection and cooperation in 2015. For the tenth year in a row, Rolls-Royce Power Systems has commended the top suppliers of its subsidiaries MTU, L’Orange and MTU Onsite Energy, choosing from a total of 495 candidates from around the globe. CFO Marcus A. Wassenberg stated “Our suppliers make a valuable contribution to product quality, substantially bolstering the competitive position of our engines and gensets, and consequently that of the entire company. For the third time, Harz Guss Zorge from Lower Saxony, Germany claimed the title of best supplier of unmachined parts. The company produces cylinder heads, exhaust elbows and engine mounts.

Dredging specialist Jan De Nul Group is set to further expand its modern fleet with a self-propelled, cutter-suction dredger to be built at Croatian shipyard, Uljanik Brodogradiliste in Pula. The vessel, currently designated JDN8069, will feature one MAN 14V48/60CR and two MAN 9L48/60CR engines as well as three step-up, RENK Rheine gearboxes for a diesel-electric plant. RENK will also deliver the gearboxes for the cutter-head drive as well as for the dredger and booster pumps. Upon completion, the vessel will be the largest of its type in the world.

Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, visited the Port of Savannah on Thursday, for an update on the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). "The SHEP will create economic opportunity not only across Georgia, but throughout the Southeast," said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. The harbor deepening, currently in the construction phase, will deepen the shipping channel from 42 to 47 feet at mean low water. This will allow today's larger, more efficient vessels to transit the channel with heavier loads and greater scheduling flexibility.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has secured a contract for the supply of four 9L48/60CR engines for the diesel-mechanical propulsion of two passenger ferries for Chinese shipping companies, Huadong Ferry and Dadong Ferry. The two newbuildings are currently under construction at Huanghai Shipyard in Shangdong, China. Both vessels have a passenger capacity of 1,500 and are intended to connect South Korea with the Chinese mainland upon entering service. MAN Diesel & Turbo will deliver the complete propulsion package for the ferries with each vessel receiving 2 × 9L48/60CR engines – providing a combined output of 21,600 kW, two Renk gear systems and two five-bladed, five-metre-diameter MAN Alpha CP propellers. The propulsion control system is MAN’s Alphatronic 3000.

Rolls-Royce today announced the completion of its acquisition of Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS). The move follows an announcement made on March 7, 2014 that the Board of Management of Daimler AG had decided to exercise the put option relating to its 50% equity interest in RRPS and the announcement on April 16, 2014 that Rolls-Royce and Daimler had agreed on a fair market valuation for the shareholding of €2.43 billion. Rolls-Royce Power Systems inform that a total of 50,000 Common Rail injection pumps have come off the conveyor belt at L’Orange GmbH in Glatten since 1997. The manufacturer of injection systems for internal combustion engines is generally acknowledged to have pioneered the Common Rail - a technology that raised fuel combustion efficiency and lowered emissions. Back in 1997, L’Orange became the first supplier worldwide to develop a series-production Common Rail pump for diesel and heavy-oil engines.

TCO AS and the daughter company TCO UK, providers of well completion technologies to the global oil and gas industry, have secured a contract with Statoil AS worth an estimated 750 million NOK (75 million GBP). The exclusive contract will require TCO to provide the total scope of chemical injection systems and a framework contract for the scope of B-annulus system and barrier plugs for Statoil operations on the Norwegian continental shelf. The initial contract period is two and a half years with an optional additional period of six years thereafter.

Nakilat, Qatargas and RasGas Company Limited will convert a Q-Max vessel as a pilot project making it capable of running on LNG and reducing the ship’s exhaust gas and greenhouse gas emissions. Qatari shipping company Nakilat and Qatari LNG producers Qatargas and RasGas Company Limited have agreed with engine manufacturer MAN Diesel and Turbo to convert a Q-Max vessel to use LNG as an alternative to heavy fuel oil in the main engines. The proactive initiative reinforces Qatar’s commitment toward the environment with plans to convert an existing low-speed diesel LNG carrier to use LNG as fuel thereby reducing the ship’s exhaust gas emissions.

Tognum, the propulsion and energy system specialist, has honored its best suppliers for the year 2012 with the Supplier Award in five categories. Jörg Schwitalla, member of the Board of Management responsible for personnel, integrity and operations, and Erik Manning, Head of Purchasing, handed over the awards. For the first time, Tognum presented the Supplier Award to two suppliers from the U.S. The prize in the category of "Most Improved for the Year" was awarded to the American supplier Honeywell International from Torrance in California. The Tognum Group buys turbochargers from them.

Implications on U.S. The next round of emission regulations will bring significant impacts to the design, construction, and operation of U.S. commercial and government vessels starting in 2014. The impending EPA Tier 4 regulations directly apply to high and medium-speed diesel engines used in workboats, ferries, small cargo ships, and government vessels. These regulations represent the most significant reduction of marine emission levels to date, specifically in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Natural gas fueled engines present one path to compliance, but not the only path.

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Since March 2013, the specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc and Daimler AG, each of which has a 50% shareholding in the company via a joint venture. The group of companies with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH as the core company has been consolidated in the Rolls-Royce Group’s results since the beginning of 2013.

Brazil’s Petrobras has been one of the leading players in deepwater, subsea development projects since the turn of the century. These projects include pre-salt and post-salt plays, which require extensive and complex subsea engineering and construction efforts. It would be impossible for Petrobras to develop all of its projects alone, therefore much is done by specialized companies, mostly of foreign origin. “We could not have advanced in this project (pre-salt) conventionally, developing the production individually. We needed a global vision of the projects, starting from a high level plan,” said José Formigli, Petrobras’ Executive Director of E&P, speaking of the primary plan for the development of the pre-salt at the Santos Basin, the Plansal, which was created in 2008.
