IMO SG Emeritus William O’Neil Passes Away

William A. O’Neil, Secretary-General Emeritus of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has died in the United Kingdom, aged 93.O’Neil was elected Secretary-General of the IMO for a first term of Office beginning in 1990, a second term beginning in 1994, a third term beginning in 1998 and a further two-year term from 2002 to 31 December 2003. He was the second longest serving Secretary-General of IMO.Current IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim expressed his sincere condolences to the Canadian Government…

Phillips Heads Gulf Petrochem's Credit Risk, Bunkering Div.

Gulf Petrochem has appointed John Phillips as Head of Credit Risk for the Group’s Bunkering division. With over 30 years experience in the Maritime sector, John is a well known expert in the industry and will focus on areas such as Credit Management (focused on Bunker business), Credit insurance & Bunker business development. Before joining Gulf Petrochem, he held the role of Global Head of Credit and Director at Soyuz Bunkering Group (Singapore) Pte Ltd, handling customer selection and promotion as well as liaising with legal departments and insurers on ship arrests and insurance claims. Prior to this, Phillips worked for Chemoil Energy Ltd, where he was responsible for the creation, implementation and management of global credit and counter party risk policy.

Changes in Swire Pacific's Top Deck

Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO) announces a change in leadership with the appointment of a new Managing Director in Singapore. Mr Ron Mathison has taken over the helm as the new Managing Director on Monday, 21st September 2015. Mr Mathison has also been appointed as Director of John Swire & Sons (S.E. Asia) Pte Ltd, with effect from 1st August 2015. Mr Mathison embarked on his career with John Swire & Sons Limited (“Swire”) when he joined Cathay Pacific Airways in 1984 and has more than 30 years of experience within various divisions of the Swire Group. Prior to his new appointment in SPO, he was the Group Managing Director of James Finlay Ltd in UK for the last seven years. Before that, from 2004 to 2008, he was the Director of Cargo in Cathay Pacific Airways.

Ghana to Roll out Shipping Training

Ghana is considering establishing modalities to compel shipping companies to introduce a training regime which ensures that their local staff gain professional qualifications in shipping. “Maintenance of professional standards in the maritime industry has been one of the hallmarks of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), over the 100 years of its existence. Dzifa Aku Attivor, Minister of Transport stated in Accra, this essential ingredient is often times not exhibited as is expected, therefore Ghana is considering a policy to inject professionalism into the industry. Attivor was speaking at the fifth anniversary of the West Africa branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) on the general theme: “Promoting Professionalism in the Shipping Industry – the role of the ICS”.

2nd WISTA India Forum Receives Strong Support

On 23rd January 2015, the Royal Mumbai Yacht Club saw around a hundred dignified members of the shipping fraternity gather for the second WISTA Annual Forum, an event that lived up to the industry’s expectations. The select crowd included long-term supporters of WISTA India and WISTA members, as well as members who flew down from Delhi, Chennai, Cochin and Bengaluru especially for this conference. The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp by key dignitaries – Hon Mr Deepak Shetty, the  DG of Shipping who was the chief guest of the evening, Mr Sanjay Bhaty, from Kandla Port trust, Mr.Umesh Grover, CEO of INSA and Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta, the President of WISTA India and Board member of WISTA International.

WISTA Launched in Sri Lanka

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (better known as WISTA),  was  launched  in  Sri  Lanka  on  the  03rd  July  2014,  at the  Hilton  Residencies  Colombo  amidst  a  large  and  distinguished  gathering  including  the  Chairman  of  the  Sri  Lanka  Ports  Authority,  Chairmen  &  Chairpersons  of  leading  Public  and  Private  Sector  Organizations  and  Institutes. WISTA Sri Lanka will function under the Presidency of Ms. Shehara Jayawardana, and consists of a 20 member committee which, to date,  has been successful  in  attracting 49 eminent females from shipping and shipping related industries to join its membership. "We are deligted to welcome WISTA Sri Lanka to our ranks“, stated WISTA President Karin Orsel.

Sanjam Gupta helps Launch WISTA in Sri Lanka

Within two years of the launch in India in 2012, the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (better known as WISTA), Ms. Sanjam  Sahi  Gupta, its Founder President, has moved fast to spread WISTA to the Indian sub continent. Her first significant effort in this direction has been the launch of WISTA in the neighboring country, Sri Lanka on 3rd July, 2014. Board Game Seeks to Transform Supply Chain Learning

Three years after its inception, today sees the official launch of an innovative new board game designed to teach young people of all ages about the importance of today’s supply chain in global commerce. The game - Business on the Move - aims to inspire, excite and educate young people from the age of 9 to 19 and beyond. The aim of the game is for players to move different products from China to their U.K. customers by land, sea and air, as quickly, as profitably and as responsibly as they can.

Supply Chain & Logistics Excellence Awards A Big Hit

CII-Institute of Logistics, as a part of its continuous endeavor in driving excellence and enable in sharing best practices in logistics and supply chain management organized the maiden Supply Chain And Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Awards on 21 & 22 May 2014 at Mumbai. Amber Coast Logistics Hosts Coaching Workshop

The EU-subsidized logistics project Amber Coast Logistics (ACL) has made its first appearance at Belarusian Transport Week, which was held just recently in Minsk. ACL had a stand of its own and offered a coaching workshop, concentrating on learning from Best Practice examples. Around 70 logistics players from Belarus attended the English-language coaching seminar, given under the title ‘Logistics companies: quality requirements for logistics services and logistics service providers in Belarus.’ Experts from established logistics companies and institutions featured as speakers. Speakers on the subject of ‘Challenges and requirements: logistics services in regions difficult to access’ included Adina Cailliaux, Project Manager at ACL lead partner Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V.

Colombia: CTQI Standard for Port of Cartagena

Two terminals in the Port of Cartagena have been certified by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) according to the Container Terminal Quality Indicator (CTQI) standard. Both terminals are operated by Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Cartagena S.A. (SPRC). CTQI, a benchmarking tool for evaluating the quality of container terminals and to increase their efficiency, was developed in 2008 by the Global Institute of Logistics (GIL), GL and other experts in international container port logistics. Speed, safety and cost efficient container terminals are more important than ever. "Our certification system is supposed to help measure and document performance level and quality standards of container terminals," explained Bernhard Ständer, Managing Director Germanischer Lloyd Certification GmbH.

Logistics & Forwarding at IBC Global Academy

Understanding the mechanics of the logistics chain has never been more critical than at a time when pressure on cost and efficiency is at a premium. Managing freight transport on a global basis, even in a downturn, combines specialist knowledge with an understanding of a broad range of disciplines. V.Ships Appoints Trivedi to Head V.Ships Agency

V.Ships has appointed Rishi K. Trivedi as Group Managing Director of the Marine Services Division’s worldwide agency business - V.Ships Agency. The move follows Shay Devine’s (former V.Ships Agency Group M.D.) appointment as Chief Executive Officer of V.Ships - Marine Services Division. Trivedi, who has been with the group since January 2000, joined V.Ships Agency UAE from Inchcape Shipping Services. Rishi holds commercial and LLB degrees from Bombay University. In a career spanning 29 years in the industry to date, he has been an active member of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the Executive Committee of the Nautical Institute UAE branch and a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK.
