UK Offshore Vessel Owner Welcomes Sustainable Shipping Specialist

If you think the human element is the only cause of enclosed space deaths, think again.Enclosed space incidents are cited as the largest cause of on-duty fatalities in commercial shipping. The risks can’t simply be engineered out, but there’s a powerful coalition wanting action nonetheless.There’s a tendency to blame failure to follow procedures, they say. Investigations seldom focus on the practicality of those procedures or the influence of the operating environment and vessel design, they say.

New High-speed Ferry Delivered to Fred. Olsen Express

Fred. Olsen Express has taken delivery of a new high-speed ferry, Bañaderos Express, built by Austal Philippines. Captain Juan Antonio Rojas and the crew of Bañaderos Express formally accepted the vessel from Austal Philippines president and general manager Wayne Murray at a COVID-safe ceremony held at the company’s Balamban, Cebu shipyard.The Austal Auto Express 118 trimaran is the second and final vessel in a A$190 million series ordered by the Canary Islands operator in 2018. The first vessel, Bajamar Express was constructed by Austal Australia and delivered in July 2020.

NorShipping 2019: A “Koselig” Event

"Koselig" is a Norwegian adjective used to describe situations that give a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. The NorShipping exhibition and conference, one of the largest in northern Europe, could definitely be described as koselig. Occurring in Oslo, Norway between June 4-7, 2019, the conference featured close to 1,000 exhibitors from around the world. With the prominently featured Blue Economy Hall, terms such as marine sustainability and environmental ocean awareness held the center stage at a number of the events. In true Norwegian fashion, most of the major press announcements were delivered in semi-intimate gathers with copious amounts coffee by maritime CEOs and VPs who enjoyed being called by their first names.

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) has elected John Hatley PE, Vice President, Americas, and Director of Market Shaping, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, as a Fellow of the institution. Candidates for election as a Fellow (FRINA) must have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the profession, a record of superior achievements in their career and having held positions of responsibility. Nominees are endorsed by two sitting FRINA, following which a membership committee carries out a full professional review and assessment of the applicant's history of achievements.

Higgins Named CEO of Nichols Brothers Boat Builders

Gavin Higgins has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ice Floe LLC dba Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB), the company announced today. Effective immediately, Higgins replaces Matt Nichols, one of the company’s founders who has served as CEO of NBBB since February 2012, also serving as CEO for more than 35 years prior to the company’s sale in 2008. Nichols will remain with the company as its Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and as a member of the board of directors.

WSS Receives Approvals for Safety Service

Class approvals and new training centres strengthen WSS safety service offering. Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has received vital approvals for its safety service from two of the world’s Classification Societies: Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and RINA (Royal Institute of Naval Architects). Mats Hestman, WSS International Service Manager Safety said: “WSS is the first maritime safety service provider to receive global GL approval, and we are extremely proud to have been approved by both GL and RINA. Stricter requirements from Class Societies have lead to the need for more audits, so this is a major achievement for us. Gavin Higgins has joined Nichols Brothers Boat Builders as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Gavin Higgins has been appointed the Chief Operating Officer at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. Shipbuilding has always been close to his heart, but Vijay Kumar’s greatest desire is to see his country, India, exploit the benefits of shipbuilding for the greater good of India’s economy as a whole. To date, the shipbuilding business in India has come with more promise than production, with its market share at a mere one percent of global shipbuilding activity, Kumar, Managing Director of Bharati Shipyard Ltd., is determined to help grow the shipbuilding industry not just for the good of his company, but for the good of the country as a whole. The Carbon Trust is today launching a global competition to find world-leading solutions to the problem of transferring engineers and equipment safely from boats to wind turbines as far as 300km offshore in 3 metre wave heights.
