Live Security Drill in Mexico

The EU's Maritime Spatial Planning Goes Global

160 experts from all over the world have gathered in Brussels on 24 and 25 May for the first meeting of the International Forum on Maritime Spatial Planning. They have discussed ongoing projects both in the EU and abroad and shared views on the challenges of planning public sea space across borders. The global character of the event stems from the recent alliance between the European Commission and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) – an international organisation with a long-standing experience on the issue of maritime spatial planning. The event is the first of a series, as the Forum is scheduled to meet twice a year between now and 2020.

Damen's Boer Secures WISTA Post

Damen’s Head of Communications, Sylvia Boer, has recently been appointed President of the Netherlands chapter of WISTA – the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association. WISTA the Netherlands was founded in 2000 and currently has 140 members from across the maritime industry. WISTA the Netherlands focuses on a number of priority topics affecting the industry. Amongst these are sustainability, new technologies, big data, health & safety, cyber security, block chain, developing cultural sensitivity and last, but by no means least, clean oceans.

All-Women Crew Tarini Enters Cape Town, South Africa

India's INSV Tarini entered Cape Town (South Africa) today during it’s maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe. This is the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew. The vessel is skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, and the crew comprises Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta. Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman, defence minister had flagged-off INSV Tarini from Goa on 10 September 17. The vessel has covered 17500 Nautical miles from Goa, crossing the Equator on 25 September 17, Cape Leeuwin on 09 November 17 and Cape Horn on 19 January 18.

All-Women Crew Circumnavigating the Globe

Indian vessel INSV Tarini entered Port Stanley, (Falkland islands on January 22, 2018 during it’s maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe. This is the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew. The vessel is skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, and the crew comprises Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta. Nirmala Sitharaman, Defence Minister had flagged-off INSV Tarini from Goa on 10 September 2017. The vessel has covered approximately 15,000 Nautical miles from Goa, crossing the Equator on September 25, 2017, then Cape Leeuwin on November 9 and Cape Horn on January 18.

All-Women Crew INSV Tarini Enters Fremantle

INSV Tarini entered Fremantle, Australia on 23 October 2017 as part of it’s maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe. Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman, Indian Defence Minister, had flagged-off INSV Tarini from Goa on 10 September 2017. The vessel has covered about 4,800 nautical miles since flagging off and crossed the Equator on 25 September 2017 and the Tropic of Capricorn on 06 October 2017. This is the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by all-women crew. The vessel is skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, and the crew comprises Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta.

Vyborg to Build Four Trawlers for ATF

Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (ATF) has entered into contract with Vyborg Shipyard for the construction of a series of fishing trawlers. The shipbuilding contract, signed at the the International Forum "The Fishing Fleet - New Impulse to Development" in Murmansk in March 2016, entered into force in November 2016. For ATF, Vyborg Shipyard, a group member of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), will build four "turnkey" medium-size trawlers project ST 116 XL to be operated in the North Basin. Each vessel of the new generation will have on board a fillet factory, a fish meal plant, equipment for fish oil production, a can factory and will be equipped with cargo cranes with high capacity as well as a cargo trawl complex of the latest generation.

IMO Joins Kenya’s World Maritime Day Celebrations

Kenya has marked this year’s WorldMaritimeDay with celebrations held in Mombasa, Kenya (20 September). International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Juvenal Shiundu delivered a goodwill message on behalf of IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, reiterating this year’s World Maritime Day theme – “Shipping: indispensable to the world” – which emphasizes that maritime transport is the backbone of international trade, supplying people all over the world with the commodities, fuel, goods and products that they depend on. The IMO World Maritime Day 2016 will take place on 29 September and will include an international forum, featuring a panel discussion on global shipping’s future challenges.

Cyber World: Safer Seas via Phantom Ships

Are we that far away from phantom fully autonomous vessels plying the world’s seas? Not according to many in the know. Many predict by 2020 that we will see this type of ship with a limited crew in smaller applications such as the marine highway short haul scenarios, local ferry service such as the Staten Island ferry and offshore supply boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Phantom/drone unmanned ships reportedly would be safer, cheaper and less polluting for an industry that carries approximately 90 percent of the world trade. However as with aircraft drones and on the horizon driverless auto’s, we must be concerned with regulatory and safety issues.

Northern Sea Freight Traffic Volumes Surge

In 2015, the volume of freight traffic along the Northern Sea Route has increased by 1.2 million tons and amounted to 5.1 million tonnes. This was at a meeting of the International Forum "The Arctic: Present and Future" in St. Petersburg deputy head FGKU "Administration of the Northern Sea Route" Nikolai Monki. "Ships of this year went through the Northern Sea Route for a few dozen more than in 2014, among them are Chinese court plans to operate on a permanent basis", - quotes the words of Monki Tass. He added that the anti-Russian sanctions have not affected the cargo. Overall, the administration Semorputi issued authorization to proceed 697 ships, including 124 foreign ones.

Is the US Prepared to Protect Its Arctic Interests?

The answer to this question is a resounding “no.” The U.S. is not prepared to protect its interests in the Arctic over the next decade. The primary legal regime that is being relied upon by all members of the Arctic fraternity, the Law of the Sea Convention, has not been adopted by the U.S. The operational resources needed to pursue our interests have not been funded and there is currently little prospect that they will be funded in the near future. U.S. interests in the Arctic are vast.

IBIA Appoints Robin Meech Vice-Chairman

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) says it has appointed Robin Meech as its new vice-chairman for a one year term of office. An independent and well respected bunker industry consultant, Robin Meech is a former bunker buyer and author of several books for the marine fuel sector. Meech replaces Jens Maul Jorgensen who became IBIA chairman on 1 April, 2014. Welcoming Robin Meech’s appointment IBIA chief executive Peter Hall said:

Transas to Participate in ETC-2014

Transas will take part in the ETC-2014 – The second International Forum on Seafarers’ Education, Training and Crewing. Environmentalists Welcome EU Proposal to Protect Arctic Waters

The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for a protected area around the North Pole which could ban oil companies and industrial fishing fleets from the region, informs Greenpeace. The move represents a clear break from the current positions of ‘Arctic Council’ members such as Norway, Denmark, Canada and Russia who have resisted calls for permanent protection of the Arctic region. More Must be Done to Prevent Deaths at Sea

As more deaths in enclosed spaces are reported this week, a call to action is needed and the industry must take note and bring this issue to the attention of each and every seafarer. “More must be done,” said Nigel Cleave, CEO of Videotel. “Every seafarer should be made aware of the risks of enclosed spaces – indeed have the message reinforced at every opportunity - there is no justification for another death. NI Issues ECDIS Recommendations

The ECDIS Group's core message: Shipping companies should establish ECDIS-use guidance within their Safety Management Systems. The ECDIS Training Group is an industry body made up of leading international shipping organisations and co-ordinated by The Nautical Institute (NI). NI CEO Philip Wake MSc FNI described the document as ‘an invaluable point of reference for those keen to establish and follow best practice in relation to ECDIS’. ‘As our industry moves away from depending solely on paper charts, this guidance provides important clarification in terms of the competencies required for what has become a vitally important navigational and decision support tool,’ he explained.

Shell to Charter Sovcomflot Newbuilding LNG Carriers

The vessels have been ordered at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (South Korea) and will be built with the participation of Russia's JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (JSC “USC”). The first tanker is due to be commissioned in late 2014 and the second vessel in early 2015. The involvement in the project of Russian shipbuilders  at Novye Admiralteyskie verfi, Kotlin island  will provide for the future specialised gas carrier needs of Russian oil & gas companies, for work on the continental shelf, in order to develop Arctic and Subarctic offshore fields.

IBIA Seeks New Chief Executive

The International Bunker Industry Association’s (IBIA) has announced that it is seeking a new Chief  Executive to run the organisation from its Southampton headquarters. The 600 member trade association has been run by IBIA board member and maritime arbitrator Trevor Harrison on an interim basis since the resignation of its previous Chief Executive last year. “Representing interests from across the entire marine fuels industry at the highest level represents an exciting opportunity for someone with extensive shipping or oil industry knowledge.
