Savannah Port Sets All-time Container Record in October
The Port of Savannah moved more container cargo in October than any other month in its history, with 413,800 twenty-foot equivalent container units crossing its docks.Containerized trade at the Port of Savannah has increased by 8 percent for the fiscal year to date (July-Oct. 2018), totaling 1.53 million TEUs – up 113,000 compared to the same period last year.“A booming economy, strong consumer confidence and an expanding customer base have resulted in record trade through the Port of Savannah,” said Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch.

GPA Will Continue Weighing Containers at No Cost to Shippers
The U.S. Coast Guard announced last week that state-calibrated scales already in use at the Port of Savannah meet a new requirement of the international Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention. “We would like to commend the U.S. Coast Guard for bringing clarity to the SOLAS issue,” said Griff Lynch, incoming executive director at Georgia Ports Authority. An amendment to the international SOLAS Convention, effective July 1, called for shippers to either weigh loaded containers or weigh empty containers and cargo separately, and provide a verified gross mass total to shipping lines.
Retailers Call on Union and Ports for Long-Term Stability
The National Retail Federation called on the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance to seek long-term stability at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports following last week’s strike at the Port of New York and New Jersey. “The threat of potential or ongoing labor disruptions will force retailers and other stakeholders to reevaluate supply chain options for their cargo,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. Shay’s comments came in a letter to union and port management executives following an unexpected January 29 strike that resulted in serious backups of cargo.
New York Area Ports Shut Down after Dock Workers Walk Out
New York and New Jersey's cargo terminals shut down on Friday after more than a thousand longshoremen walked off the job, shuttering one of the country's busiest port networks. Houston Ship Channel Celebrates 100 years
Blue skies and a cool breeze set the stage for a once-in-a-century event today: the 100th anniversary rededication of the opening of Houston's deep-water port. International Longshoremen's Association, Houston Pilots, U.S. Coast Guard, current and former Port Commissioners, industry stakeholders and others, attended the Houston Ship Channel Rededication at Brady's Landing overlooking the Houston Ship Channel. The event took place 100 years to the day of the original ceremony in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson fired a cannon by remote control from his office in Washington D.C.
Niels Lyngso Retires from West Gulf Maritime Association
WGMA says Lyngso’s retirement effective October 1, 2014. Born and raised in Denmark and finishing his shipping education including maritime law studies in 1972, Niels Lyngso has been a longtime stalwart for WGMA. Arriving in the United States in 1972 as a management trainee for Olsen & Ugelstad, he has since filled many roles along the collective, domestic waterfront. Lyngso’s maritime career has spanned many decades and still many more roles, including the management of bulk vessels and a long history in liner agency work.
Canadian Maritime & Supply Chain Coalition Formed
Leaders of the new coalition say they are fighting for the survival of the Canadian Maritime Industry, and explained their significant worries concerning the Canadian-European Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) and the lack of transparency that government has had when making this deal. This free trade agreement will allow EU beneficially owned Flag of Convenience (FOC) vessels and so-called European National Flag to trade freely between Canadian ports without any restrictions on origin of the crew, or level of wage and working conditions.
Coalition Asks Senate for Vessel Discharge Legislation
On June 20, a diverse coalition of 58 national and regional organizations representing a wide array of leading business, maritime and labor organizations signed on to a letter to Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Chairman John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-SD) urging that the committee mark up and approve S. 2094, a bill that would establish a uniform, science-based national framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges. Labor Leader Clyde Fitzgerald Appointed Port of Houston Commissioner
Harris County Commissioners Court has appointed longtime labor leader Clyde Fitzgerald to serve as a member of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. Fitzgerald's appointment fills the seat of former Port Commissioner Jim Fonteno, who submitted his resignation to Commissioners Court in April, indicating his desire to spend more time with his wife and two young daughters. Clyde Fitzgerald, who started his career at age 16 working on the wharves of the Houston Ship Channel, was sworn in Tuesday after Commissioners Court selected him to fill Fonteno's unexpired term.
Port Operations Halted as Baltimore Strike Continues
Multiple sources reported that a longshoremen labor strike at the Port of Baltimore Wednesday morning has forced the closure of the port’s major terminals. All cargos at the port's public marine terminals continue to be affected and no ships are operating. The strike was brought into effect by a vote held Tuesday night where the International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 rejected a local contract with the Steamship Trade Association of Baltimore, which represent the port's employers of longshoremen, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Port of Baltimore Fully Open: Latest Update on Dispute
Workers have agreed to a 90-day extension on local contracts following talks between Local 333 of the International Longshoremen’s Association and the Steamship Trade Association of Baltimore Inc., reports Bloomberg, citing a statement by Richard Scher, a spokesman for the Maryland Port Administration. Earlier, the Maryland Port Administration was notified by the Steamship Trade Association that Master Contract cargo could be worked, which included containers and roll on/roll off vessels. The 90-day extension agreement by Local 333 ends the stoppage and all cargo is now being worked.
Lockout Uncertainty Looms at Port of Baltimore
Some shippers have reportedly begun diverting cargo from the port of Baltimore due to uncertainty about the ongoing labor contract standoff with the largest dockworkers' union, despite assurances there won't be another strike or a lockout. Members of Local 333 of the International Longshoremen's Association met Thursday night to discuss the latest local contract proposed by the Steamship Trade Association, which represents port employers, but did not vote on the proposed contract, officials said.
Longshoremen Reject Port Contract – Again
Unionized longshoremen at the Port of Baltimore have voted to reject a contract proposal from their employers, again extending a labor standoff that has destabilized the state's primary trade hub for months. Members of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILO) Local 333 voted 416 to 140 to reject the local contract. The Steamship Trade Association, which represents employers at the port of Baltimore, had repeatedly called the contract its "best and final" offer. This latest development leaves the situation between the two parties with no labor agreement in place, but no threats of a strike or lockout. The port is expected to continue operating. In October 2013, members of Local 333 staged a three-day strike that paralyzed the port's public terminals.

While the agreement’s pros-and cons are about to be scrutinized in an upcoming meeting between America’s Federal Maritime Commission, the European Competition Commission, and China’s Ministry of Transport, carriers outside the P3 are aggressively taking steps to stay competitive regardless of the regulators final decision. S. 2094, introduced on March 6 by Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), has 23 bipartisan co-sponsors, nearly one-quarter of the Senate.
Miami Shipping Alliance Opposes Beckham's Soccer Arena Plan
An alliance of shipping interests and a billionaire car dealer launched a newspaper ad on Monday protesting retired English soccer star David Beckham's plans for a soccer arena at the port of Miami, saying it threatens the city's plans to capitalize on the expansion of the Panama Canal. "We cannot jeopardize well-paying jobs, like crane operators, longshore workers, and mechanics, for low-paying stadium jobs, such as concession sales," the Miami Seaport Alliance said in a full-page ad that ran in the Miami Herald and its sister Spanish-language paper, El Nuevo Herald.

Imports to Increase After Labor Deal
Retail Imports to Increase 8.5 Percent in February After East Coast/Gulf Coast Contract Deal is Reached. With a tentative contract deal reached with East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers but a key West Coast agreement unsettled, import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to increase 8.5 percent in February over the same month last year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. “We were very happy to see a deal on a tentative contract for the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports but we are urging the parties to quickly work out any outstanding issues and ratify the agreement as soon as possible,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said.
