Unique Piloting System for US East Coast’s Longest Pilotage Route

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has supplied the Association of Maryland Pilots with SafePilot Portable Pilot Units (PPUs) and a Port System server solution to facilitate consistent, real-time information sharing between almost 70 pilots. The SafePilot system is part of Trelleborg’s Smarter Product Portfolio, which its marine systems operation is evolving to support the ‘Port of the Future’. The Association of Maryland Pilots serves the Chesapeake Bay, the longest pilotage route on the East Coast of the United States, with its nearly 200 miles of waters. The scale of the waters put particular demands on the operational battery time the piloting equipment requires.

But container shipping is also what made globalization possible in the first place. The principle of division of labor is nothing new to us today. In 1776, the economist Adam Smith, a formative thinker of the free market economy, elucidated this concept in his book, The Wealth of Nations. The operative principle is that the employees of a company divide up different tasks and thereby increase their productivity.

US Port Implements New Terminal Management Solution

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation providers of technology for the movement of cargo through terminals, announce that Richmond Marine Terminal, in Richmond Virginia, went live with Navis SPARCS N4. The Port of Richmond is a barge terminal handling containerized, break-bulk and bulk cargo across all modes of transportation, located 70 miles inland. The Port of Virginia selected Richmond as a stepping stone to launch Navis SPARCS N4 at its other sites. Replacing a legacy home grown solution, SPARCS N4 will help Richmond Marine Terminal improve operational efficiencies, such as manual data entry. With SPARCS N4, terminal operators can now perform real-time data entry using N4 Mobile enabled iPads at both the barge and gates.
