Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger
Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. Tug Company Honored
Island Tug and Barge Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C., received an award from the Washington Department of Ecology for excellence in marine safety and environmental stewardship. The Exceptional Compliance Program (Ecopro) Award was presented at the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center on Pier 66, 2205 Alaska Way, in Seattle. Tank-barge companies receive the Ecopro Award only if they meet or exceed all 26 of Ecology's marine-safety standards for tank barges. Island Tug and Barge is the fifth company to earn the award since the program began in 1999. This is the first tug-and-barge company to receive the award. "Island Tug and Barge has demonstrated its commitment to the environment by voluntarily meeting our state's tough marine-safety standards," said Ecology Director Jay Manning.

Foss Ships Utility Trucks to Puerto Rico
At the Port of Virginia in Norfolk and the Port of Lake Charles in Louisiana, Foss Maritime is loading hundreds of utility trucks onto barges bound for Puerto Rico this week. It’s all part of the on-going effort to restore power to nearly half of the population who are without electricity. Last Friday, Ricardo Rosselló, governor of Puerto Rico, announced that 1.5 million Puerto Ricans are still without power 100 days after Hurricane Maria hit Sept. 20. Kodiak, Alaska - A Coast Guard Air Station HC-130 Hercules airplane crew conducted an overflight June 27, 2011, of a barge that was being towed by the tug Aries. Crane Strikes McTeer Bridge
On April 26, a crane being towed by the tug Sara Kaitlin struck the McTeer Bridge on the Beaufort River. The barge under tow, Mobro 139, was carrying the crane that struck the bridge. The tug and barge were heading south towards Savannah, Ga. The crane sustained minor damage. The operators of the tug and barge, Savannah Marine Services Inc. and CML Equipment Company LLC respectively, are fully cooperating with the Coast Guard. This matter is under investigation by the Coast Guard. South Carolina Department of Transportation has closed the McTeer Bridge to vehicular traffic. The Lady's Island Bridge (Wood's Bridge) is open to recreational vessel traffic on a restricted schedule as follows. Commercial vessel traffic restrictions have not been implemented at this time.
Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven
A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.
Inside Modutech Marine’s Work Boat Medium
The U.S. Navy has some spectacular vessels, from submarines to high speed RIBs. They also have dedicated ports and support facilities worldwide. A practical reality of all of this is that the Navy requires efficient and handy boats to support the warhorses. To meet this requirement John Myers of the naval architect firm Hockema & Whalen and Associates have developed a 30 by 15-foot tug with a 5.5-foot draft. Currently the Navy has 24 of these tugs, designated Work Boat Medium, on order from Modutech Marine Inc. of Tacoma, Wash.

Matson Increases Neighbor Island Barge Capacity
Matson, Inc. said its subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has replaced one of its three barges dedicated to serving Hawaii's neighbor island ports with a newer, larger barge that will improve service levels. The container barge Columbia, to be renamed Mauna Loa in honor of the barge it replaces, is now Matson's largest barge. At 360 feet long, with a beam (width) of 100 feet and cargo carrying capacity of 12,600 tons or 500 TEU, it is 12 feet longer and 40 feet wider than the barge it replaces, with the capacity to carry 180 more TEU or nearly 8,000 tons more cargo. Built in 2012 by Gunderson Marine and classified as a Deck Cargo Barge with approximately 33,000 square feet of deck cargo space, the vessel's design enables swifter and more fuel efficient transits.
Grounded Barge Capsized
The barge ITB-260 loaded with 3,324 tons of gravel capsized north of Gig Harbor, Wash., when the tide came in, causing the load of gravel to shift and eventually spill into the water. The tug Island Breeze was towing the barge when it reported to the Coast Guard that the barge was taking on water. Over three hours later the crew of the tug reported they had pushed the barge against the shore to prevent it from sinking. The Coast Guard is working with the owner of the barge to ensure the damage to the barge can safely be evaluated before being allowed to proceed. This incident did not result in the release of any petroleum products. The barge was transporting the gravel from Dupont, Wash., to Kenmore, Wash.. The Island Breeze is owned by the Seattle-based company Island Tug and Barge.
Reducing Emissions in Southern California
The classic Four Preps song says that it is 26 miles or 40 kilometers to Santa Catalina from the California mainland. Others say it is only 20 or 22 miles but regardless of the distance the tugs of the Connolly-Pacific Company, a Subsidiary of Knife River Corp., make regular crossings of the channel with barge loads of aggregate from a quarry on the island to construction firms on the mainland. They supply their own marine construction requirements as well as marketing rock products in the Los Angeles to San Diego area.
Grounded Barge Refloated
The 125-foot deck barge known as Weeks Barge 236 was refloated Thursday evening at approximately 6:15 p.m. after having been grounded and stuck on shore near Atlantic Beach, N.Y., the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The barge, which was being used to sand blast and paint the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge, went ashore after, according to crew members onboard the tug, a large wave separated the tow line between it and the 26-foot tugboat that was towing it on Monday night. Krill Supplies VFMMS to Island Tug and Barge
Krill Systems Inc., a producer of Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), announced delivery, installation and successful sea trials of three more systems to Island Tug and Barge Ltd. of Richmond B.C. Canada. The newly fitted vessels, Island Scout, Island Brave and Cindy Mozel, bring to a total six vessels fitted in the Island Tug and Barge fleet with Krill VFMMS, the others being Island Crown, Island Defender and Island Monarch, which were fitted about three years ago. The Krill VFMMS systems installed on these vessels will measure and transmit fuel consumption data from two main engines and two generators on each vessel and transmit that data to a Krill Vessel Operations Center (VOC) installed at Island Tug and Barge headquarters.
Conrad to Build Young Brothers' New Tugs
Conrad Shipyard of Morgan City, La. has signed a contract to build four Damen Stan 3711 tugs for Young Brothers, Limited of Hawaii, announced Conrad President and CEO, Johnny Conrad. The four new twin-screw tugs are 123-feet in length with a 36.5-feet beam and powered by G.E. 8L250 engines rated at 6,000 horsepower. Designed for high stability and maneuverability, the tug has a maximum bollard pull of 80-metric tons and a top speed of 12.5 knots. Honolulu headquartered Young Brothers, Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Foss Maritime, is Hawaii’s largest inter-island cargo service provider.
Coast Guard Investigates Barge Sinkings
The Coast Guard continues to investigate the grounding and sinking of two barges on the Hudson River near the Bear Mountain Bridge in Bear Mountain, N.Y., after the two barges broke free of the Tug Buchanan 12. The Buchanan 12 was pushing 13 scow barges when two broke free. A scow barge is a flat bottomed, square bilged vessel that typically carries rocks, gravel, dirt, and other similar loose products. The tug's master immediately notified the Coast Guard Sector New York Command Center on Staten Island, N.Y. The Coast Guard issued a broadcast notice to mariners, dispatched an inspector and an investigating officer, and notified the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The tug master reported that the barge B2002 lost most of its cargo of crushed stone after breaking free of the tug.
Hurricane Rita Waterways Update
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release updating the status of waterways affected by Hurricane Rita. The port of Freeport is open for all vessel traffic. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway is open to tug and barge traffic between the Colorado Locks and the Calcasieu Locks. The port of Galveston and the Galveston Channel are restricted to vessels with drafts of 35 feet or less and daylight transits only. The port of Texas City and the Texas City Channel are restricted to vessels with drafts of 35 feet or less and daylight transits only. Barbours Cut is restricted to vessels with drafts of 35 feet or less and daylight transits only. Bayport and the Bayport Channel are restricted to vessels with drafts of 35 feet or less and daylight transits only.
Aloha Foss Maritime
Hawaiian Tug & Barge, which provides harbor support services in all major ports of Hawaii, has adopted new colors and a new name: Foss Maritime Company. Founded by Young Brothers Ltd., Hawaiian Tug & Barge (HTB) was formed as a sister company to separate harbor operations and charter activities from Young Brothers' inter-island freight operations. HTB has since become Hawaii's leading tug and barge transportation company operating four tugs with 20 employees. Young Brothers and HTB joined the Foss Maritime group of companies in 1999.
Tug and Barge Disabled near Galveston
Emergency responders are working to keep a disabled tug and barge from running aground off of Texas. U.S. Coast Guard response and incident management teams are coordinating with G & H Towing and T & T Marine Salvage to prevent a disabled tug and barge from running aground on Galveston Island, Texas. At 2:19 p.m. Saturday, an agent for the integrated tug OSG Independence and its barge OSG 243 contacted Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders to report that the tug separated from the barge in heavy seas off the Galveston Island Pleasure Pier, while dragging both anchors.
Ocean Tug & Barge Delivers FacetTug Design
Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp. has completed the engineering of an AT/B conversion for Reinauer Transportation of Staten Island, N.Y., the third such AT/B conversion engineered by the Milford, Mass. firm for Reinauer with a fourth currently underway. The converted AT/B tug Craig Eric Reinauer was recently delivered by Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, R.I., to Reinauer Transportation. The 4610 BHP tug received an Intercon connection system at the Rhode Island shipyard.
Alabama Shipyard Delivers Second ATB
Alabama Shipyard has delivered another articulated tug and barge (ATB) unit to Reinauer Transportation Companies of Staten Island, N.Y. The Christian Reinauer and the RTC 143 is the second ATB unit built for Reinauer at Alabama Shipyard’s facility in Mobile. The first ATB unit, the Nicole Leigh Reinauer and the RTC 135 was delivered by Alabama Shipyard in December 1999. The 7,200 hp twin-screw ocean-going tug is 124 ft. and features the patented Intercon tug/barge coupler system designed and built by Intercontinental Engineering and Manufacturing Corporation of Kansas City, Mo. The system consists of two independently mounted gear drive ram assemblies that connect the tug and barge. The connection is transversely rigid and mechanically locked.
Big Power for Z-drive Barge
Seaspan Coastal Intermodal of the Washington Marine Group put a new trailer-carrying push-barge into operation in late summer. It is the second that they have built to this design and they have made a few upgrades. The original barge was connected in as an articulated-tug-barge (ATB) unit with a friction pad system. On arrival at Seaspan's associated company Vancouver Shipyards, from the builders in China, the new barge had sets of solid steel pads welded into place in the stern notch. Each of the port and starboard pads includes three vertically distributed 400 mm diameter receptor holes for the air-over-hydraulic pins that had been retrofitted to the tug, Seaspan Challenger. This JAK-400 ATB system provides a powerful positive lock for the ATB. The new barge, at 456 x 82 ft.
