Israeli Navy Could Respond to Iranian Oil Smuggling

Germany Subsidizes Warships Sale to Israel

Israel bought four German-made corvette warships on Monday to help secure its Mediterranean gas rigs, with Berlin heavily subsidizing the deal, Israel's Defence Ministry said on Monday. The ships, worth 430 million euros ($480 million), will be built by Thyssen Krupp and delivered within five years, providing significantly more fire power to Israel's navy. The German government will pay 115 million euros towards the cost. As part of its atonement for the Nazi Holocaust, Germany is committed to Israel's security and has often helped pay in the past for the cost of military equipment such as submarines. Thyssen Krupp also committed to buy 700 million shekels ($181 million) worth of Israeli goods under the contract.

Powerful Submarines Join Israel’s Navy

The Israel Navy’s fourth submarine, the ISS Tanin (Crocodile), is expected to become fully operational in a few weeks and participate in naval operations. The nuclear-capable submarine boasts an array of sophisticated weaponry, as well as the latest in intelligence-gathering technology. It stands at a whopping 68 meters long, compared to 57.3 meters on average for other submarines. The navy’s fifth submarine, meanwhile, is expected to arrive this summer, and is now in the final stages of construction at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) shipyards in Kiel, Germany. Israel is expected to officially take control of the ISS Rahav (“arrogance” or “fearlessness”) in a few weeks, when it will begin its maiden voyage from Germany to Israel. Lt. Col.

The navy has been working with Israeli defense companies to develop a range of sea and underwater combat technologies, from radars to electronic warfare capabilities. Despite budget cuts, the IDF is in the midst of a multi-year force buildup process, and the navy is going through an unprecedented phase marked by weapons upgrades, reports the Jerusalem Post, citing Navy sources.

Secretary of the Navy Visits Israel

Winter, arrived on March 23 for a three-day visit in as a guest of the Israel Ministry of Defense and the Israel Navy Commander in Chief, Vice Admiral Eli Marum. This visit is a continuation of the strong ties and extensive collaboration between the and U.S. Naval Forces. This is Winter's first visit in as the Secretary of the Navy. His first visit to the country was in 1998 when he arrived with a delegation of U.S. Military Industry Seniors. Israel Navy to Participate in NATO Exercise

Eight ships belonging to the NATO southern forces docked at the Haifa port as part of the NATO Mediterranean dialog program. The ships will be the guests of the Israeli Navy from May 29-June 4. A press conference took place aboard the Spanish freighter after the ships docked, held by the commander of the NATO force, Brigadier General Teodoro Lopez-Calderon and the commander of the Israeli Naval base in Haifa, Brigadier General Yochai Ben-Yosef. Brig. Gen. Ben-Yosef welcomed the guests and noted that the visit marked another step in the advancing of the relationship between the IDF and NATO. Dometic Awarded Israel Navy Contract

Dometic Environmental Corporation has won orders to supply air conditioning systems for up to 10 new-generation Israel Navy Super Dvora III fast patrol and attack craft. The air conditioning systems include a six-ton Cruisair chiller and multiple air handling units with computerized thermostat controls in all living and operational spaces. Dometic also supplied Cruisair HVAC systems for the earlier Super Dvora I and II vessels. The Super Dvora III high-speed patrol boats are being built by Israel Aircraft Industries’ Ramta Division, which has contracts to build 10 vessels. The versatile Super Dvora III boats are designed for all-weather littoral/brown-water surveillance, search and rescue missions and policing duties, as well as increased blue-water naval operations.

Israeli Navy to Receive German Submarines

Israel's navy will receive two new sophisticated German-made submarines, IRNA reports. The submarines were built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The German government refused Israel's request to cover the $1.1 billion price tag for the construction of the submarines, but did agree to provide one-third of the construction costs from its household budget, estimated at around $387 million. German arms exports to Israel reached approximately $900 million between 1998 and 2001. Source: IRNA
