Former FedEx Canada President to Head Long Beach Port

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners is scheduled to vote Monday, June 30, to name Jon W. Slangerup, a veteran corporate executive with extensive experience in global logistics and environmental technologies, as the Port of Long Beach’s new Chief Executive. “After an extensive, nationwide search, the Board of Harbor Commissioners is very pleased to recommend the appointment of Jon Slangerup as the Port’s new Chief Executive,” said Harbor Commission President Doug Drummond. “He’s an extremely capable leader, proven team-builder and expert at managing a world-class organization. With the pending expansion of the Panama Canal and the aftermath of the 2008 recession, port communities throughout North America have been highly focused on maintaining and growing their business.

Coast Guard Foundation to Host Pacific Awards

The Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that it will host its 29th Annual Pacific Area Awards Dinner in tribute to the United States Coast Guard at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the historic Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. The gala event will bring together civic and business leaders, mariners, sailors, and notables from all over the country to honor heroism and mission excellence from the brave men and women serving in the Coast Guard’s Pacific area.

POLB Chief to Leave for Oakland

Christopher Lytle, Port of Long Beach Executive Director since November 2011, will resign to take the top post at the Port of Oakland. Lytle will remain at Long Beach until mid-July, and is expected to begin his new job in Oakland shortly thereafter. He joined the Port of Long Beach in 2006 as a managing director, was promoted to Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer in 2008 and became the Port’s top executive after the retirement of longtime executive director Richard D. Steinke.

POLB Named Best in N. America

The Port of Long Beach earned “Best Seaport in North America” honors at the 2013 Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards in Beijing. The 2013 Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards recently hosted in Beijing by the Cargonews Asia shipping trade publication, witnessed the 16th win in the past 18 years for Long Beach. The award recognizes the best ports as judged by importers, exporters, and logistics and supply chain professionals. "We deeply appreciate this recognition, which comes from members of the supply chain industry,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director J. Christopher Lytle. "We will continue to work hard to improve our Port from top to bottom, from terminals, channels and bridges to customer service.
