This Day In Naval History: April 18

1848 - U.S. Navy expedition to explore the Dead Sea and the River Jordan, commanded by Lt. William F. Lynch, reaches the Dead Sea. 1906 - U.S. Navy assists in relief operations during the San Francisco earthquake and fire. Sailors and Marines fight fires and ships carry the homeless and injured to Vallejo, where medical personnel established emergency facilities. 1942 - The Doolittle Raid begins with 16 Army Air Force B-25 bombers launching earlier than expected from USS Hornet (CV 8), approximately 650 miles off Japan, after being spotted by enemy ships. It is the first attack by the U.S. of the Japanese mainland since Pearl Harbor. Most of the 16 B-25s, each with a five-man crew, attack the Tokyo area, with a few hitting Nagoya.

Navy's 2013 Stockdale Leadership Awards Decided

Cmdr. Richard N. Massie and Cmdr. Leif E. Mollo are the 2013 recipients of the Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award which is presented annually to two commissioned officers on active duty in the grade of commander or below who are serving in command of a single unit and who serve as examples of excellence in leadership & conspicuous contribution to the improvement of leadership in the Navy. Massie, commanding officer of the USS Maine (SSBN 741 - Gold) is the Pacific Fleet winner and Mollo, commanding officer of SEAL Team FOUR is the Fleet Forces Command winner.

Navy Commissions Newest Ship

USS Stockdale (DDG 106), the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer, was Commissioned at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme on Saturday, April 18, during a formal ceremony featuring H. Ross Perot as the Honorary Chair for the event and Admiral Keating as the Keynote Speaker. The fast warship - which is the same class of Navy ship as the USS Bainbridge deployed to the waters off Somalia to help in the rescue efforts of Capt. Roberts Phillips - will provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. As the first destroyer named for the Navy's highest ranking POW, the ship embodies the spirit and patriotism of Medal of Honor Recipient Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale.

Newest Navy Ship Visit

USS Stockdale (DDG 106), the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer, will be arriving at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme on Tuesday, April 14th at approximately 10:00 a.m. and will be Commissioned during a formal ceremony on April 18 at 11:00 featuring Admiral Keating as the Keynote Speaker and H. Ross Perot as the Honorary Chair for the event. An estimated 100 Vietnam Veterans and former Prisoners of War, and Medal of Honor recipients are attending this historic commissioning and the surrounding events. Named after the much respected American war hero and former Vice-Presidential candidate, Navy Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale, the fast warship will provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities.

Navy Accepts Delivery of Destroyer Stockdale

The Navy accepted delivery of the guided-missile destroyer Stockdale from General Dynamics Bath Iron Works during a ceremony in on Sept. 30. Designated DDG 106, the new destroyer honors Medal of Honor recipient Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale (1923-2005), the legendary leader of American prisoners of war (POWs) during the Vietnam War. Stockdale is the 56th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. The ship will be able to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection. Stockdale will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously and contains a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime warfare.

Stockdale Award Winners Receive Accolades from CNO

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead speaks in honor of the Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale awardees, Cmdrs. Frank J. Olmo and Craig A. Clapperton at the Hall of Heroes inside the Pentagon. The Vice Admiral Stockdale Leadership Award is named after James B. Stockdale, who was credited with having a naval career that symbolized the excellence of leadership. Naval Academy Honors Distinguished Alumni

The U.S. Naval Academy paid tribute to four of its alumni March 30 and 31 through the 2007 Naval Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award program. Retired Rear Adm. Maurice H. Rindskopf, retired Adm. Thomas B. Hayward, Ralph W. Hooper, and retired Adm. Leighton W. Smith Jr. received the Distinguished Graduate Award in a ceremony March 30, and participated in a leadership conference with more than 500 Midshipmen March 31. During the ceremony, the Midshipmen learned about Rindskopf’s exploits as a submariner in the Pacific during World War II; Hayward’s experiences as Chief of Naval Operations; Hooper’s business, sailing and philanthropic interests…

CNO Announces Newest DDG

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. Michael G. Mullen, announced the construction of USS Stockdale (DDG 106) at the Western Conference and Exposition (West 2006) at the San Diego Conference Center January 12 in the presence of Mrs. Sybil Stockdale, widow of Navy and Vietnam War hero, Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale. “You and James are examples to all of us,” said Mullen to Stockdale. “Vice Adm. Mullen went on to say that it was the first ship he’s named as CNO and that it was only fitting to name it after James Stockdale. “I can’t even put it into words what this means to me,” said Dr. James B. Stockdale, Jr., son of the vice admiral. “I feel very proud. Stockdale is considered by many to be one of the greatest heroes in U.S. history. He was the highest-ranking POW in the Vietnam War.
