Marad: Helis Accepts New Post at MarAd Headquarters

A Statement from the Maritime Administration has announced that RADM James Helis has accepted a senior post at the U.S. Maritime Administration headquarters in Washington. “The Maritime Administration today announced that RADM James Helis has accepted a position at MARAD headquarters in Washington DC where he will serve as a Special Assistant to the Administrator. During his six year assignment as Superintendent, Helis led the response to many  complex issues including, financial and management issues which had threatened USMMA’s accreditation. Under his leadership, the Academy launched several major construction projects as part of its Capital Improvement Plan.

Senate Hearing on USMMA Issues Scheduled

USMMA Celebrates Completion of Mallory Pier

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point informs it recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Mallory Pier. The pier was completely reconstructed as part of USMMA’s overall $71 million dollar Capital Improvement Plan. Faculty, staff and guests were welcomed by the Regimental Band’s Fanfare Trumpets, who were then followed by a greeting from Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Superintendent. Helis thanked those who played a role in the pier’s completion, including the Capital Improvement Team, engineers, administrators, the Waterfront staff and the contractor, Russell Marine. “The new Mallory Pier is a major accomplishment and a concrete (pun intended) symbol of our ongoing efforts to renovate and modernize the Academy’s facilities…

LaHood Appoints Seven to USMMA Advisory Board

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the appointment of seven members to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Advisory Board. The USMMA Advisory Board serves as an independent body whose purpose is to examine the course of instruction and management at the Academy and advise the USMMA Superintendent and Maritime Administrator to ensure the best possible educational atmosphere for all midshipmen. “The Department is committed to providing every midshipman at Kings Point the highest-quality education possible,” said Secretary LaHood.
