Coast Guard Commissions MSST

A new Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST 91110) was commissioned on Oct. Vice Adm. James Hull, Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander, presided as the official for the ceremony. Craig P. Coy, Chief Executive Officer of the Massachusetts Port Authority, was the guest speaker. MSSTs are domestic mobile units that possess specialized training and capabilities to perform a broad spectrum of port safety and security operations. They are modeled after the Coast Guard's Port Security Units (PSUs) and Law Enforcement Detachments (LEDETs). They will be staffed with Coast Guard men and women, ready to respond or deploy, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. MSST 91110 is the ninth Coast Guard anti-terrorism/force protection to be established.

New Cutter to be Launched

On Saturday, February 7 the Marinette Marine Corp. (MMC) will launch the U. S. Coast Guard cutter Alder. Alder is part of the plan to replace the Coast Guard’s World War II era 180-foot cutters. Alder is a 225-foot Juniper Class seagoing buoy tender with icebreaking capabilities. It is the 16th cutter of a planned fleet of sixteen to be built by MMC in Marinette. MMC also built fourteen 175-foot Keeper Class coastal buoy tenders for the Coast Guard. In October 2001 MMC was award the contract to build an icebreaker to replace the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, ‘the Great Lakes Icebreaker’. Mrs. Judy Hull, wife of Vice Admiral James Hull, is the cutter’s sponsor. Vice Admiral Hull, the Atlantic Area commander, will be the keynote speaker. Alder will be homeported in Duluth, Minn.

Coast Guard Honors Service Performed After World Trade Center Attack

Vice Adm. James Hull, U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander will present Mark Merchant the Meritorious Public Service Award on Monday, August 5, 2002. Merchant is recognized for his meritorious contributions to the Coast Guard following the attack on the World Trade Center and the Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team’s Anthrax response in Boca Raton, Fla. MSST to be Commissioned in Hampton Roads

The Coast Guard’s newest weapon against terrorism will be commissioned in a formal ceremony 9:30 a.m. Friday at Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, Va. Representative Jo Ann Davis (R-VA) will be the guest speaker for the commissioning ceremony. Atlantic Area Commander Vice Adm. James Hull will be the presiding official. Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) 91102, the second of six Coast Guard anti-terrorism/force protection teams to be established as a direct result of the Sept. 11 attacks, will be commissioned after completing an intensive four-week initial training course at Camp Lejeune, N.C., which culminated in a 36-hour exercise in the port of Wilmington, N.C., last month.

USCG Provides New Layer of Port Protection

Maritime Safety and Security Team Houston-Galveston (MSST 91104), the U.S. Coast Guard’s newest weapon against terrorism, was commissioned in a formal ceremony Tuesday at 2 p.m., at the Galveston Cruise Ship Terminal in Galveston, Texas. CG Commandant to Speak at Conference

More than 400 U.S. and Canadian government, commercial and environmental officials will meet for a two-day conference beginningWednesday, January 29 at the Sheraton Cleveland City Center. Known as Marine Community Days, this event brings together the U.S. and Canadian members of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway marine community to discuss a broad range of issues. Discussion topics will include: Homeland Security, the Maritime Transportation System, maritime security, navigation, environmental issues and dredging. Cutter Deploys for Operation Enduring Freedom

A Charleston-based Coast Guard cutter has been ordered to deploy overseas to support Operation Enduring Freedom and to prepare for future contingencies. USCGC Dallas (WHEC-716), a 378-foot high endurance cutter with a crew of about 175, was underway on patrol this past weekend when it received the order from the Atlantic Area commander here to head overseas. Dallas is deploying with an HH-65B Dolphin helicopter and 7-member aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J. The ship departed Charleston Feb. 8, patrolling and conducting training off the East coast of the United States prior to receiving deployment orders. The largest and most capable class of Coast Guard cutter, Dallas is deploying at the request of the Department of Defense as the U.S.

Secretary Ridge to Welcome Back Coast Guard Forces

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge will welcome back Coast Guard Patrol Forces Mediterranean in a ceremony at Nauticus in Norfolk on June 11 at 3 p.m. The crews of the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas and four 110-ft. patrol boats, two Coast Guard law enforcement detachments, and 45 support and Port Security personnel will be greeted by Secretary Ridge, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thomas Collins, and Atlantic Area Commander Vice Adm. James Hull. Dallas, homeported in Charleston, S.C., deployed Feb. 8 to work with the Navy’s 6th Fleet in the Strait of Gibraltar. In the months leading up to the war with Iraq, the 378-foot high-endurance cutter helped protect U.S. shipping there from terrorist threats.

Northland Returns Home from Operation Liberty Shield

The Coast Guard Cutter Northland is scheduled to return to its homeport today at 10 a.m. following a 63-day homeland security patrol for Operation Liberty Shield off the Virginia coast. Northland led a maritime security squadron (MSS) guarding the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. At times, Northland coordinated the patrol efforts of two U.S. Navy Coastal Patrol Boats and many fixed winged and rotary aircraft. Northland coordinated this multi-asset patrol effort to increase maritime domain awareness and monitor shipping traffic for threats to America and the ports and waterways from Hampton Roads, Va., to Baltimore.
