Apprentices Graduate to Newport News Shipbuilding
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted commencement exercises Saturday to graduate 157 apprentices from the company's Apprentice School located at Newport News Shipbuilding. This Day in Coast Guard History – May 28
1813-Revenue Cutterman John Bearbere died of pneumonia while being held as a Prisoner of War by the British after his cutter, the James Madison, had been captured by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Barbadoes near Savannah, Georgia on 24 November 1812 during the War of 1812. He was one of five of those captured aboard the cutter who died in captivity. Philadelphia Gear Appoints Biddle As NE Regional Sales Manager
Philadelphia Gear Corporation announced the promotion of Scott Biddle, 36, to the newly created position of Northeast Regional Sales Manager. Biddle's new position includes management of sales growth throughout the eastern U.S. - an area already covered by himself, several Philadelphia Gear sales personnel, and three independent firms who represent Philadelphia Gear in their respective territories - along with the expansion of his own sales territory to include eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. As a regional sales manager, he will work to ensure that Philadelphia Gear customers are serviced in a fashion that meets their immediate needs.

ACL Announces Appointments and Promotions
American Commercial Lines Inc. has appointed Sam George to the position of vice president of environmental compliance, James L. Adams to the position of Vice President of Governmental Policy and Mario A. Muñoz to the position of Vice President, Regulatory Compliance. George brings several years of chemical and environmental compliance knowledge to the company. His most recent position was vice president of Madison Chemical Co., where he managed all environmental and regulatory compliance programs as well as environmental consulting services. He is a graduate of Hanover College and a graduate of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. Adams brings a background in transportation and public policy to the company.

Cutter Deploys for Operation Enduring Freedom
A Charleston-based Coast Guard cutter has been ordered to deploy overseas to support Operation Enduring Freedom and to prepare for future contingencies. USCGC Dallas (WHEC-716), a 378-foot high endurance cutter with a crew of about 175, was underway on patrol this past weekend when it received the order from the Atlantic Area commander here to head overseas. Dallas is deploying with an HH-65B Dolphin helicopter and 7-member aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J. The ship departed Charleston Feb. 8, patrolling and conducting training off the East coast of the United States prior to receiving deployment orders. The largest and most capable class of Coast Guard cutter, Dallas is deploying at the request of the Department of Defense as the U.S.
