Orca AI to Participate in Second Phase of Autonomous Ship Project

Tel Aviv-based maritime technology company Orca AI is continuing its collaboration with NYK Group subsidiary MTI and partners in the second development stage of the MEGURI2040 project administered by the Nippon Foundation.MTI, alongside sister entity Japan Marine Science Inc, is spearheading the Designing the Future of Fully Autonomous Ships Plus (DFFAS+) consortium comprising 51 Japan-based companies that will work together on the next phase of MEGURI2040.While the OECD projects that maritime trade volumes could triple by 2050, a skilled crew shortage is growing globally.

ABS Approves Fully Autonomous Ship Framework

The design of a pioneering, fully autonomous ship framework has received approval in principle (AIP) from ABS.The fully autonomous ship framework, named APExS-auto (Action Planning and Execution System for full autonomous), was developed by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI) and Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS) as part of the fully autonomous ship program MEGURI 2040.ABS worked with MTI and JMS to review the APExS-auto framework in accordance with the ABS Requirements for Autonomous and Remote-Control Functions.

Autonomous Containership Trialed in Japan

Video: NYK Trials Remote Tug Operations

Several companies within Japan's NYK Group have partnered to test the remote navigation of a tugboat in Tokyo Bay.The tugboat, operated by NYK's Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation, was equipped with a manned remotely controlled system and put to the test by NYK and its group companies MTI Co. Ltd., Keihin Dock Co. Ltd., and Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS).During the trials, the tug was operated remotely from an operation center in the city of Nishinomiya, approximately 400 kilometers away.

JMS Welcomes Sea Cadets

Japan Marine Science Inc. New Partners in Autonomous Shipping Alliance

Three 'influencers' in the international maritime sector have joined One Sea,  the industry alliance that brings together leading exponents of autonomous ship technology.Global satellite group Inmarsat and NYK Group research subsidiary MTI (Monohakobi Technology Institute) have joined One Sea as full members, while the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become a One Sea associate member.One Sea members ABB, Kongsberg Maritime and Wärtsilä ran separate autonomous ship trials off the Finnish and Norwegian coasts at the end of 2018.

NYK Intros New System for Vessel Berthing

Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and NYK Group companies MTI Co. Ltd. and Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS) have developed a system (patent pending) to assist with vessel berthing.The system assesses a vessel’s controllability and visualizes the risk in the berthing operation to reduce the burden on the operator and eliminate accidents caused by human factors, it said.When a ship is berthing, a guideline indicates the exact reduction in ship speed as the distance to the wharf nears. NYK Study on Avoiding Collisions

NYK and NYK Group companies MTI Co. and Japan Marine Science released partial findings of a study on collision risk judgement and the autonomous operation of vessels. Representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), and three partner manufacturers (Tokyo Keiki, Japan Radio, and Furuno Electric) were in attendance when the findings were released. This entire study includes development of (a) functions to facilitate judgement related to avoiding risk of collision with other vessels; (b) remote operations by land operators; and (c) devices related to AR (augmented reality) of nautical instrument information, with the aim to pursue safe operations and reduce officer workload.

ClassNK Invests in Japan Marine Science

ClassNK announced that it had reached an agreement to establish a capital tie-up with Japan Marine Science Inc. at a meeting in Tokyo today. The tie-up agreement will see ClassNK take a roughly 20% stake in the Tokyo-based company, which will issue new shares in exchange for a capital investment from the classification society. ClassNK Managing Director Koichi Fujiwara will also take a position on Japan Marine Science’s Board of Directors. According to ClassNK Managing Director Koichi Fujiwara, the tie-up presents an important step forward for both companies.
