Seaspan Shipyards Names Anttila COO
Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) appointed Jari Anttila as Chief Operating Officer (COO), who has more than 25 years of experience in shipbuilding and industrial operations. Previously with Philly Shipyard Inc. where he served as Senior Vice President, Anttila has considerable experience in successfully leading organizations through large shipbuilding projects. Prior to joining Philly Shipyards Inc., he held positions as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President with Meyer Turku and its predecessors in Finland. TUI Cruise Ship Keel Laid at STX Finland
On 25 February 2014, approximately nine months after the keel laying of TUI Cruises’ first newbuilding Mein Schiff 3, TUI Cruises and STX Finland celebrated the keel laying of Mein Schiff 4 in the Turku shipyard. Following the old shipbuilding tradition, the lucky coins were placed under the keel block of the ship. In the lucky coin ceremony, held on the bottom of the drydock, the shipowner was represented by Richard J. Vogel, CEO of TUI Cruises, CFO Frank Kuhlmann, Chief Engineer of Mein Schiff 3 Kostas Kallinikos and the designated Captain of Mein Schiff 3 Kjell Holm.
Cruise Ship Floated at STX Turku Shipyard
The float-out of Mein Schiff 3, an environmentally friendly cruise ship being built for TUI Cruises, was performed at STX Turku Shipyard on Friday, November 8, 2013. At the press conference held at STX Finland Oy’s Turku Shipyard earlier the same day, Richard J. Vogel, CEO of TUI Cruises and Jari Anttila, Deputy CEO of STX Finland Oy were pleased to speak about the important milestone Mein Schiff 3 project reached on that particular day. One year ago, the start of production of newbuilding 1383 was celebrated at Turku Shipyard. Mein Schiff 3 is scheduled for delivery in spring 2014.
Negotiation to Save Finnish Shipyard Completed
STX Finland has been actively seeking solutions for saving the Finnish shipyard industry. In September 2013, the company launched a major restructuring aimed at safeguarding the operating potential of the company and, by extension, the entire maritime industry in Finland, thus ending the years of uncertainty. As part of the STX Finland Oy restructuring, cooperation negotiations concerning the Rauma and Turku Shipyards have been conducted between the personnel groups and the company management. The negotiations were completed on October 29, 2013.
STX Finland Re-structuring: Hundreds to Lose Jobs
As part of the restructuring of STX Finland, current operations at the Rauma Shipyard will be ramped down and functions shifted to the Turku Shipyard. Like other European shipyards, the Finnish shipbuilding industry is suffering the effects of the recession in the global economy; an increase in surplus capacity and the financial crisis have all led to a cut in orders and stiffened competition. Consequently STX Finland say they have been been activelly seeking solutions in order to save the Finnish shipyard industry.
STX Finland to Close Rauma Shipyard
STX Finland, which has seen a deterioration of its shipbuilding base for many years, today announced its latest plan to stem the flow of red ink: a phase out of the Rauma shipyard. Senior management cited the continued bad global economy in the wake of the economic meltdown of 2008 as the primary source of trouble. "The decisions made now are based on a realistic estimate of the company’s current state and the market outlook,” said Jari Anttila, EVP & Deputy CEO of STX Finland.
STX Finland’s Rauma Shipyard Launches OPV
The offshore patrol vessel UVL10, currently being built for the Finnish Border Guard at STX Finland Oy’s Rauma shipyard, was named Turva at a festive naming and launching ceremony on Friday 2 August. Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen acted as godmother for the ship, wishing the vessel and its crew luck and success in their future maritime operations. STX Turku Shipyard Delivered a Cruise Ferry
On Thursday 10 January 2013, STX Finland Oy’s Turku shipyard delivered a next-generation cruise ferry to Viking Line ABP. Building of the environmentally friendly M/S Viking Grace started at the STX Turku shipyard in September 2011 and the ship was floated out in August 2012. The ship provided some 2,600 man-years of labour to the shipyard. M/S Viking Grace will enter traffic on the Turku (Finland) – Åland Islands – Stockholm (Sweden) route on 15 January 2013. M/S Viking Grace is the most environmentally friendly large cruise vessel ever built, using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel. The ship’s emissions into the sea have been eliminated, and emissions into the air are remarkably lower than those of any other large passenger ships.
Shipyard Seeks Loan to Build New Cruise Ship
STX Finland is now lobbying the Finnish government on behalf of Royal Caribbean in a bid to get contract for third 'Oasis-class' cruise ship. A loan would help facilitate a deal to avoid Royal Caribbean building its third Oasis-class cruise ship in Germany or France. The state owned financing firm, Finnvera, has reached an impasse with Royal Caribbean to securing a loan to allow the proposed ship to be built. STX is concerned that if a deal is not reached soon between Royal Caribbean and Finnvera, the cruise giant may look to shipyards in Germany or France as alternatives.
STX Finland Makes Management Changes
STX Finland announced a number of management changes, citing the challenging market situation. The primary target set for STX Finland is profitable operation. In 2011 this target was achieved, and now the focus is strongly on how similar development could also be secured over the years to come. By consolidating sales and marketing into a corporate level activity, STX Finland strengthen and increase the efficiency of its strategic targets which main focuses are diversification, differentiation and customer relationship management. - Timo Suistio has been appointed EVP, CMO of STX Finland. He is tasked with enhancing the functioning capacity of sales and marketing and boosting the order book of the shipyards to ensure long-term operation of the company.
STX Turku Launches Multipurpose Cargo Vessel
On March 1, 2012, STX Finland Oy Turku shipyard carried out the launch of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel built for Gaiamare Ltd. The vessel will be approximately 105.4 meters long and approx. 18.8 meters wide. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in late spring 2012. The launching was carried out near the shipyard’s construction basin following traditions of the yard with representatives from Gaiamare Ltd, the classification society Bureau Veritas and STX Finland; invited guests and press also participated. The multipurpose deck cargo vessel is designed to operate globally and can be utilized for various tasks, including transport of demanding project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structure and for energy wood transport in the Baltic Sea area.
Keel-laying at STX Turku Shipyard
The keel-laying of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel, built for Oy Gaiamare Ab, was held at STX Turku Shipyard on Wednesday January 4, 2012. The NB 1379 is 105.4m long and 18.8m wide, and is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2012. Representatives of the customer Oy Gaiamare Ab, classification society Bureau Veritas, and STX Finland were present witnessing the keel-laying event. The versatile vessel is designed for transportation of demanding and heavy project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structures. The ship is also very suitable for transporting energy wood in the Baltic Sea region, and she is also designed to operate as a flexible oil spill response vessel.
TUI Cruises Orders Cruise Ship
STX Finland Oy and TUI Cruises signed a contract for the design and construction of a 97,000 GT cruise vessel. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2014. The vessel has many environmentally friendly features, with a particular emphasis on the vessel’s energy efficiency. TUI Cruises has an option to order another ship subject to the decision of TUI Cruises shareholders. The vessel will be approx. 295 meters long and approx. 36 meters wide. The ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will serve maximum of 2,500 passengers and a crew of 1,000 persons. High balcony ratio will ensure that most of the passengers will have a possibility to enjoy their own balconies during the cruise.
Multipurpose Deck Cargo Vessel To STX Finland’s Turku Shipyard
On 22 March 2011, STX Finland Oy and Gaiamare Ltd signed a contract for the construction of an innovative and versatile multipurpose deck cargo vessel. The ship will be delivered during spring 2012 and has a length of 105 metres a width of 19 metres. The environmentally friendly ship will provide work for about 300 persons. The concept development for the vessel has been done in close cooperation between STX Finland and Gaiamare. The vessel will have numerous innovations and very high specifications, including the ability to operate efficiently in demanding ice conditions.
STX Finland Signs a Maintenance Contract for Saipem
On 20 April 2011, STX Finland Oy and Saipem S.p.A signed a contract on major overhaul and maintenance of the semisubmersible pipelay vessel Castoro Sei. The work on the ship, providing employment for as many as about 1,000 people, will be completed by STX's Turku shipyard. The Castoro Sei is a 152 metres long and 70.5 metres wide semisubmersible pipelay vessel, owned by Italian offshore company Saipem S.p.A. She is currently deployed in laying the pipeline for the Nord Stream project on the Baltic Sea.
