NYK Testing Cashless Ships

Japan's Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is currently considering the establishment of a new network that will enable onboard financial settlements through the remittance of electronic money (e-money).The the shipping and logistics company said it is as a part of the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green”.Onboard tests have been conducted to examine the potential to reduce administrative work and the risk of cash loss, and thus foster an employee-friendly workplace where crews can work comfortably and concentrate on ship operations.Today, onboard payments are made in cash. Crew members are given a part of their salaries in cash, and daily goods are paid for in cash.

Peel Ports Secures WEC Lines Service for Liverpool

Dutch company WEC Lines is to begin weekly calls at the Port of Liverpool from February 10th, providing a new option for shippers looking to access central and northern UK markets. The brand new service will connect Liverpool with Lisbon, Setubal, Leixoes and Sines and vice versa, with other links to Ireland, Scotland, Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands. WEC Lines said: “This is a major new development for us, offering a dedicated, faster and direct container service for our customers in the Iberian peninsula, north Africa and the Canaries.

Campaign to Cut Haulage Miles

Peel Ports announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May, Peel Ports called for importers and exporters whose goods began or ended their journey in the north of the UK to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years. In addition to achieving significant carbon reduction, the company also estimates that the move could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs by delivering to the heartland of the UK.

Peel Ports has today (Thursday 19 November) announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Mermaid Kohler Range to Be Launched

Mermaid Marine is to launch a new range of diesel engines, the Mermaid Kohler. The partnership between U.K. diesel engine marinizer Mermaid Marine and Kohler expands Poole based Mermaid Marine’s offering to smaller inboard engines with the company now able to supply engines from 31kW to 376kW. It has come about through Mermaid Marine’s parent company, Power Torque’s work with JCB which has partnered with Kohler’s Global Power Group to use the Italian manufactured engines in several of its compact machine lines in what the company terms the next stage of its engine strategy.

Eleven Models Now Available from JCB

Mermaid Marine has increased its range of JCB Dieselmax marine diesel engines. The company, based in Poole, now has eleven models available in the JCB TCAE range ranging from 55kW / 74hp to 120kW / 160hp suitable for a large variety of applications, with the smaller engines particularly suitable for the grant funded repower market. Peel Ports Invests £8m in the Port of Liverpool

An £8 million investment in the Port of Liverpool’ animal feed warehouse facility makes it the largest of its type in the U.K., increasing capacity by 60% to 400,000sq.ft, allowing Peel Ports Group to add value to its customer supply chains and create effective logistics solutions, the company said. The Port of Liverpool is the U.K.’s most centrally positioned port and can uniquely connect by water to the major conurbations of Glasgow, Dublin, Belfast and Manchester, via the Manchester Ship Canal.

Concordia Baby to See Mother(ship) for the First Time

Concordia Baby, the latest vessel to be completed by specialist workboat builder Alnmaritec, is heading to the Falkland Islands to be installed onto the mother ship M/V Concordia Bay. Operated by Workboat Services Ltd., MV Concordia Bay provides service as a passenger and cargo ferry within the archipelago. Peel Ports, JCB and Briggs Partner Across Supply Chain

Briggs Equipment is helping Peel Ports Liverpool to maintain the nation's supply of animal feed after securing a multi-million pound contract to supply and service JCB equipment to one of the country's busiest ports. One of Britain's largest port groups, the Peel Ports Group operates five major gateways, handling a broad spectrum of international trade amounting to more than 65 million tons of cargo a year. The Peel Ports facility in Liverpool is home to the country's largest animal feed store and as a result has taken delivery of five new JCB wheel loaders supplied by Briggs.

GPA Posts Double-Digit Growth for August

The Georgia Ports Authority saw a strong August, with increased business across all categories, both month-over-month and fiscal year to date. Totals for all terminals hit 2.3 million tons, up 13 percent on the month. For the fiscal year, 4.52 million tons of cargo have crossed GPA docks, for an increase of 5.6 percent. “The GPA’s growth despite a relatively flat economy reflects the level of efficiency and service our customers receive, which helps Georgia’s deepwater ports maintain existing business and expand our market share,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. The Port of Savannah marked an August increase of 10.4 percent in total tonnage, or 197,720 tons, for more than 2 million tons of cargo.

UK Engineering Sector Challenged to Draw in Young People

UK engineering chiefs gathered at the Department for Education on Wednesday 8 June to discuss what can be done to ensure the talent pipeline and adequately equip young people for the requirements of industry. Organised by EngineeringUK, Schools Minister Nick Gibb MP addressed a high-level roundtable attended by representatives from EngineeringUK, E.ON, BAE Systems, JCB, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford of Britain, the ODA, GKN, Rolls Royce, ICW UK, the Royal Academy of Engineering and Pearson UK. With almost half a million engineering enterprises in the UK, employing 4.5 million people, the engineering industry is one of the most significant drivers of the UK economy today.

QinetiQ recently launched a range of Appliqué Robotic Kits (ARKs) designed to convert the current in-service military JCB 4CXM or CAT320B families of vehicles into fully integrated remote controlled units for use in various hazardous environments in less that 12 hours, giving users control of the vehicle from as far as 1 km away. In addition, the ARKs are designed to allow existing vehicles to change between full remote or manual mode, thus reducing potential dangers to the operators but still enabling it to be fully used for tasks for which it was designed. The product is ideal for plant operators and drivers often placed in real danger when working in hazardous environments or involved with activities that deal with military operations…
