Portsmouth Marine Terminal Reopens Today
The Port of Virginia marks an important milestone Monday 14th September as Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT), closed for nearly three years, reopens to cargo operations. At 8 a.m. on Monday, the terminal will begin receiving trucks carrying containers for export. “Sustained growth in our container business necessitates PMT’s return to service and is a sign of health for The Port of Virginia,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA). The first vessel call is scheduled for early October and from that point forward the 30-acre operation will process between 75,000 and 100,000 containers annually. The operation will be “wheeled,” or containers-onchassis; there will be no stacked containers except for those units in the empty yard.

Make Over for Landing Craft
The iconic 4-wheel-drive World War II Jeep has undergone decades of upgrades to become the modern SUV. Now the craft that landed on the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific has been similarly upgraded at the South East Asia Shipyard in Vietnam. The most important factor in the design, by France’s Piriou Ingénierie, is the provision for the landing craft to carry up to nine TEU of containers on trailers as well as regular cargos. Side rails will secure the trailers and their containers. Electric connections will be provided for reefer containers.
This Day in Coast Guard – July 20
1917- An Executive Order extended the jurisdiction of the Lighthouse Service to the non-contiguous territory of the American Virgin Islands. 1942-The Herald-Tribune of July 20, 1942, carried the following story: "A new Coast Guard regiment, made up of tough, hand-picked men, all heavily armed and with the headquarters company mounting machine guns in speedy jeep cars, has been organized for extra protection of the Port of New York, it was announced yesterday. Regimental offices of the commando-like outfit, led by Captain Francis V. Lowden, will be in the Barge Office at the Battery. There will be five battalion headquarters -- one each in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey, and a floating one set up a harbor patrol craft.
Midway Demonstrated Carrier Importance
In the late spring of 1942, a Japanese carrier strike force launched more than 100 planes from the northwest to conduct an air attack on the U.S. military at Midway Atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. By 5:30 a.m. that day the United States located and identified the incoming Japanese threat. In an hour�s time, America and Japan engaged in what would later be looked back upon as the most pivotal naval engagement of World War II. June 4-6 marks the 65th anniversary and remembrance of the confrontation, which genuinely demonstrated the importance of the Navy�s aircraft carriers, after the U.S. fleet sank all four Japanese carriers involved, and consequently neutralized the Pacific front.
