The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works a $212-million contract for design and construction of a steel deckhouse and hangar and construction of aft Peripheral Vertical Launching System (PVLS) modules for integration into 'Lyndon B Johnson' (DDG 1002), the third ship of the U.S. Navy's 'Zumwalt-class' of guided missile destroyers. The Zumwalt-class deckhouse includes the ship's bridge, radars, antennas and intake/exhaust systems in a structure with a significantly smaller radar cross-section than other ships in the modern Navy fleet.

The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works a contract valued at US$2.8-billion for the construction of four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, with an option for a fifth ship. On December 14, 2012, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), erected the composite deckhouse for Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the U.S. Navy’s next generation destroyer, and in the process achieved two new milestones in the company’s 128-year history:  a 900-ton, four-crane, static lift of the deckhouse module for DDG 1000, and a record-breaking movement of the ship and deckhouse on the shipyard’s Land Level Transfer Facility, the total combined weight of which exceeded 13,000 tons.

This $70.5 million contract is to provide ongoing planning yard services for the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer and the FFG 7 Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate programs. This option modifies a contract initially awarded in June 2012. The period of performance is December 31, 2012, through December 29, 2013. Bath Iron Works manages post-delivery maintenance and modernization activities for all DDG 51-class ships and all FFG 7-class ships, including design, material kitting, logistics, planning and execution. The company is currently supporting 84 ships in the fleet.

The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works a $38.9m modification to a previously awarded contract to perform class and engineering services associated with the detail design and construction of DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class ships. Bath Iron Works will continue to provide manufacturing support services such as engineering, design, production control, accuracy control and information technology. Other class-support efforts include program management, contract and financial management, procurement and configuration/data management. The original contract was awarded in September 2011. Work is expected to be completed by October 2013.

The contract includes options which, if exercised and fully funded by the Navy, would bring the total value of the contract to $371.6 million and extend the performance period through 2016. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), a $663m modification to a previously awarded contract to construct DDG 116, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. DDG 116 is the fourth ship in the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class construction-continuation program. Bath Iron Works is also under contract for the construction of DDG 115, the third ship in the program. On November 17, 2011, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works celebrated the keel laying of Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the first ship in the planned three-ship Zumwalt class of guided-missile destroyers. The keel unit is the 4,000-ton, heavily outfitted mid-forebody section of the ship, which was moved from the shipyard’s Ultra Hall construction facility onto the building ways in late October. On Saturday, October 22, the shipbuilders of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), completed the largest and most complex ship module movement ever executed at the shipyard. The mid-forebody section of Zumwalt, the lead ship of the DDG-1000 class of guided missile destroyers, was transported 900 feet from its assembly position inside the shipyard’s Ultra Hall construction facility to the largest of the company’s three shipbuilding ways. The heavily outfitted module is about 180 feet long, over 60 feet high and weighs more than 4,000 tons.

The U. S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), a $1.8 billion contract for the construction of DDG 1001 and DDG 1002, the next two ships in the Zumwalt-class program. DDG 1001 is scheduled to be delivered in December 2015 and DDG 1002 is scheduled to be delivered in February 2018.
