US Navy Submarine New Jersey (SSN 796) Christened

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) christened pre-commissioning unit New Jersey (SSN 796) at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division.“The christening is a Navy and shipbuilder tradition that celebrates the hard work and dedication of the women and men who are building this magnificent submarine, readying her for the next phase of construction, which includes launch, testing, sea trials and delivery to the Navy,” said Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding.

US Provides $100 Mln in Port Security Grants

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced final allocations of $275 million for six fiscal year 2016 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) competitive preparedness grant programs, including $100 million for the Port Security Grant Program (PSGP). The PSGP aims to help protect critical port infrastructure from terrorism, enhance maritime domain awareness, improve port-wide maritime security risk management and maintain or reestablish maritime security mitigation protocols that support port recovery and resiliency capabilities.

The Coast Guard Research and Development Center, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, officially opened a joint research facility in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the R&D Center’s offices located at Fort Trumbull. The Science and Technology Innovation Center is a collaborative effort between DHS Science and Technology and the Coast Guard R&D Center dedicated to leveraging innovation, prototyping and rapid integration of high technology solutions to answer the operational challenges of the Coast Guard and DHS.

Arctic Coast Guard Forum Established

A joint statement, officially establishing the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF), was signed today by leaders representing all eight coast guard agencies of the Arctic nations. The Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF) is an operationally-focused, consensus-based organization with the purpose of leveraging collective resources to foster safe, secure, and environmentally responsible maritime activity in the Arctic. Membership includes Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Russian Federation, and the United States. “The United States is proud to join fellow Arctic nations at this inaugural Arctic Coast Guard Forum,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.

Adm. Paul F. Zukunft assumed command as the 25th commandant of the Coast Guard today, relieving Adm. Bob Papp during a military ceremony at the Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building. “Adm. Papp’s leadership and resolve have left an indelible mark on the service,” said Zukunft. “To the men and women of the Coast Guard, I'm humbled to stand before you as your 25th Commandant," said Zukunft. Adm. Zukunft reports to Coast Guard Headquarters from Alameda, Calif., where he served as the Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander since 2012.

U.S. Coast Guard Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger relieved Vice Adm. John Currier as Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard during a change of watch ceremony at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C., Tuesday. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp presided over the ceremony and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson attended. “It has been my honor to serve our nation as the vice commandant,” said Currier. The change-of-watch ceremony is a time-honored event preserved by rich heritage of naval tradition.

DHS Secretary Johnson to Keynote CGA Commencement

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's 133rd Commencement Exercises May 21, 2014. Secretary Johnson is the fourth Secretary of Homeland Security and assumed his office Dec. 23, 2013. The commencement is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field. "Each commencement is a momentous event, but this one will be particularly special since Secretary Johnson will visit us for the first time to present commissions to our newest ensigns," said Academy Superintendent Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz.

Sens. Menendez, Booker Urge Feds to Expedite Road Salt to NJ

NJDOT wants Jones Act Waiver. U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) have jointly sent a letter to both U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx requesting that they continue to assist New Jersey with receiving a critical supply of rock salt. They acknowledged both agencies’ role in securing maritime delivery of a 10,000-ton supplemental supply for the Garden State. “The State of New Jersey has been among the hardest hit states this winter season, with more than 70 inches of snow accumulated in some parts of the state,” wrote the Senators. “The Governor has issued at least four state of emergency alerts.
