Tor Svanes, "Mr. ECDIS", Chronicled in New Book

NAVTOR CEO Tor Svanes is "Mr. ECDIS", at least that't the title he's been given in a new book charting his life story as well as his role in the development of maritime e-Navigation. Author Tønnes H. Gundersen details the voyage that took Svanes from electrician’s apprentice in the small town of Egersund, Southern Norway, to a globally renowned figure in this key smart shipping niche. And, Svanes is keen to add, the journey isn’t over yet.Gundersen spent more than two years researching, interviewing and writing the 300-page opus, which was launched today in both English and Norwegian versions.

DMS Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division from Boeing

Digital Marine Solutions (DMS) has completed acquisition of the assets of the Marine Division of Jeppesen, a Boeing company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund. Under the terms of the agreement the Jeppesen Marine and C-MAP portfolio will continue to operate as a separate entity under the C-MAP brand name. Digital Marine Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division

Digital Marine Solutions announced today it has signed a purchase agreement to acquire the marine division of Jeppesen, subject to regulatory approval. Under the terms of the agreement, the former Jeppesen Marine will operate as a separate entity with its own dedicated resources and will trade under the C-MAP brand name. Jeppesen will remain as part of The Boeing Company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund, which is part of the Nordic based Altor family of private equity funds. This strategic acquisition leverages Altor’s experience in the Marine industry, where it also is the majority owner of the Navico house of marine brands.

Adams Offshore Chooses Jeppesene

Jeppesen Marine announced that Adams Offshore has installed its Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service on one of its dive support and offshore supply vessels, and is considering implementation of the solution across its fleet worldwide. Adams Offshore installed the Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service on DPSV Adams Challenge in October. Kumar reports that since then the system has been operational and problem-free. Based upon this experience, Adams Offshore chose to equip both of DPSV Adams Challenge’s ECDIS systems with the Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service, then to install the same service on its DPSV Adams Aquanaut offshore support vessel.   (www.jeppesen.com/marine)

Jeppesen Marine Supports ECDIS Training

Jeppesen Marine is contributing to the training of the next generation of seafarers in electronic navigational charts and ECDIS by supplying systems and data to one of Norway’s maritime training institutions, Bergen Maritime Technical School. In addition to the C-MAP Professional vector database and ENCs that Jeppesen Marine already supplies for the school’s bridge simulators, the company will now supply 50+ C-MAP OceanView systems for route planning in an office environment. “I got the idea from the Norwegian Coastal Administration,” said Kåre A. Johnsen, the school’s navigation and bridge simulation instructor. “They decided to equip all pilots with laptop computers and electronic chart systems after the Rocknes accident.

NYKCooL Selects Jeppesen Marine

Jeppesen Marine has signed a contract agreement with NYKCool AB to install its Vessel and Voyage Optimization Solution (VVOS) aboard a class of refrigeration carriers trading from the Caribbean and Central America to Northern Europe. The decision to fit VVOS on the ships was made by NYKCool following an extensive sea trial that revealed a measurable improvement in fuel conservation, seakeeping and schedule integrity. CHS Agreements with Jeppesen Marine

Jeppesen Marine signed two license agreements with the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) in May. The first is a CHS Value-Added Reseller (VAR) agreement authorizing Jeppesen Marine to integrate CHS products and updates into its own value-added products for the marine industry. The second agreement makes Jeppesen Marine an authorized dealer of official Canadian Hydrographic Service Digital Charts, including CHS Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) and BSB raster charts, and also allows Jeppesen Marine to issue CHS ENCs in type-approved SENC format. “We’re happy that our CHS products will be available through Jeppesen Marine’s global reseller network,” said CHS Dominion Hydrographer Dr. Savithri Narayanan. “Jeppesen Marine’s products are popular in the Canadian marketplace.

Jeppesen Marine New Optimization Solution

The latest version of Jeppesen Marine Vessel and Voyage Optimization Solution (VVOS), released in April, offers integration with its worldwide C-Map electronic chart database. The C-Map cartography integration enables a user to perform a visual safe navigation check of VVOS route alternatives to ensure the recommended route is safe and does not encounter any hazards to navigation. Once the safety check is completed and the VVOS operational route selected, a user can export the passage plan to an ECDIS or INS for execution. Additional features include enhancements to VVOS’ speed optimizations capabilities and the introduction of tidal current data for a total pilot-to-pilot route optimization in selected areas such as the English Channel and Malacca Straits. Jeppesen Launches Trial and ROI Analysis Program

Designed to address the needs of owners, operators, charterers and masters of trans-ocean vessels, VVOS empowers masters and shore-side managers to develop optimized passages while managing vessel speed, fuel consumption, schedule integrity, seakeeping and environmental conditions. Jeppesen Marine Donates to SCI

Jeppesen Marine has donated its Workboat Navigator software packages to two Seamen’s Church Institute’s (SCI) Centers for Maritime Education for use in mariner training courses. Both the Paducah, Ky. and Houston, Texas facilities received four licenses to run on the installed simulators, plus an additional program for the lab computer. Founded in 1834, SCI’s education facilities provide navigational training to mariners through simulator-based facilities. The Paducah education center is used for training inland mariners, and the Houston facility trains inland, coastal and deep-sea mariners. Jeppesen Launches Improved Chart Updating Service

Jeppesen Marine has launched a new updating service that can transmit Notices to Mariners, new charts and new chart editions to ships at sea, all via a high-speed Internet connection. The service, called C-MAP Updating Service Online+, applies to Jeppesen Marine's C-MAP Professional+ and C-MAP ENC chart database subscribers. The key to this new updating service is Jeppesen's distribution format, called C-MAP CM-93/3 and type approved by DNV. This format can compress large amounts of navigational data to a size that makes online transmission rapid and reliable. Ships will need to download only 6 MB to 9 MB of data per week (for global coverage) for the C-MAP ENC database, and substantially less for C-MAP Professional+.

Jeppesen Delivers Workboat Navigator to Cenac

Cenac Towing has become the launch customer for Jeppesen Workboat Navigator – A Professional Information Service. Jeppesen Marine recently announced this new offering which is aimed at commercial vessel operators in coastal and inland waterways. Cenac is a family owned tow operator with 41 inland and offshore tow boats, plus over 100 inland and offshore tank barges. Boeing to Acquire C-Map

The Boeing Company reached an agreement to acquire C-Map, a leading provider of digital maritime cartography, data services and other navigational information.
