Dredging Vital to US Ports, Senate Hearing Informed

Chairman American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) explains  the importance of dredging to the industry & the US economy. Jerry Bridges, the American Association of Port Authoritiesā€™ Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority in his testimony informed  the hearing, entitled 'Water Resources Development Act: Growing the Economy and Protecting Public Safety', of the fundamental importance of dredging to the industry. U.S. House Subcommittee Recommends $1 Billion for 2013 Dredging

The U.S. House Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee, chaired by Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.), today approved its fiscal 2013 funding bill for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including a $1 billion draw from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund for maintaining Americaā€™s deep-draft navigation channels and harbors. This would be the largest regular annual appropriation for navigation maintenance. ā€œWhile still less than the need for full use of the Harbor Maintenance Tax (HMT)ā€¦

AAPA Elects Armando Duarte of Santa Marta, Colombia, As 2013 Chairman. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)ā€”representing the interests of seaports throughout the Western Hemisphereā€”this week during its Centennial Spring Conference board of directors meeting in Washington, D.C.ā€”elected Armando Duarte-Peláez as its next chairman of the board. Mr. Duarte- Peláezā€™s one-year term will begin the last day of AAPAā€™s 101st Annual Convention in Mobile, Ala., which runs Oct. 21-25, 2012.

Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Named Chairman; Two Past AAPA Board Directors Receive Distinguished Service Award. Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Jerry Bridges was formally installed on Sept. 15 as the American Association of Port Authorities' (AAPA) chairman of the board for 2011-12. ADT to Install $4.75M Security System at Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland announced today the award of a $4.75 million maritime security enhancement contract to Florida-based ADT Security Services, Inc., a unit of Tyco Fire & Security. Under the contract, ADT will install an integrated security system using advanced technology to assist the Port of Oakland, the nation's fourth busiest container port, in its overall security assessment and improvement program. The contract is being funded through a 2002 seaport security grant award from the federal Transportation Security Administration. The contract calls for a comprehensive system design: automated access control, video surveillance, perimeter intrusion detection, as well as an integrated communications infrastructure.
