Longtime business and civic leader Yui Hay Lee has joined the Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners. Lee was sworn in yesterday to a seat on the seven-member Board.Lee, President and CEO of Oakland-based YHLA Architects, was nominated by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and appointed by the City Council. At the UN's Climate Summit this week a diverse group of global leaders, from World Bank president Jim Yong Kim to California Governor Jerry Brown, spoke of the need for polluters to pay for each ton of carbon they emit. More than 1,000 companies pledged their support for the effort. Carbon pricing, largely rejected by the United States and struggling in Europe, is suddenly all the rage, with China leading the charge. The world's biggest greenhouse gas emitter plans to establish a national market for carbon permit trading in 2016 and has already launched seven regional pilot markets. Boosters of carbon pricing policies say that once China sets a national price on carbon, others will follow.

California lawmakers on Friday passed legislation requiring railroad companies to tell emergency officials when crude oil trains will chug through the state. The bill would require railroads to notify the state's Office of Emergency Services when trains carrying crude oil from Canada and North Dakota are headed to refineries in the most populous U.S. state. It passed its final vote in the Assembly 61-1, with strong bipartisan support within the state legislature in Sacramento. The bill now goes to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown for his signature. "We have a spotlight on this issue because of the seriousness of the risk to public safety that it presents," said the bill's author, Democratic Assembly man Roger Dickinson, whose district encompasses parts of Sacramento along the trains' route.

Oil and gas asset integrity and corrosion management firm LUX Assure said it has made strides in developing a presence in the U.S. by establishing a sales and service agreement with Houston-based Brown Corrosion Services Inc. Brown Corrosion Services will be handling the business development of LUX Assure’s innovative corrosion management products CoMic and OMMICA, and handling the deployment of CoMic in the U.S.. LUX Assure will be exhibiting alongside Brown Corrosion Services at the upcoming NACE Corrosion 2014 conference in San Antonio, Texas on stand 1827 from March 9-13.

The Port of Oakland is one of 47 projects nationwide to win a TIGER (Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery) infrastructure grant. The Port of Oakland announced the grant with California Governor Jerry Brown and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood at a press conference in Oakland. “I would like to congratulate the Port of Oakland on this great accomplishment,” stated Assembly-member Mary Hayashi. Over 700 applicants competed for the TIGER grant. The Port of Oakland's Intermodal Rail Improvements for the former Oakland Army Base project was one of only 47 projects selected nationwide. It is also the largest Port project to win an award.

USNS Medgar Evers, the newest ship in the U.S. Navy's Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships operated by Military Sealift Command, was christened Nov. 12 during a morning ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. With the traditional words, "I christen you USNS Medgar Evers," Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of the ship's namesake, broke the traditional bottle of champagne against the bow of the ship. Evers was launched Oct. 29 and is scheduled for delivery to MSC in spring 2012.
