‘Smart Containers’ Roll Out for Silk Road

CIMC Internet of Mobile Things International Operation and Service Co., Ltd. (CIMC IOMT) and Globe Tracker International, ApS announce commercial roll out of Smart Containers, Smart Logistics and Smart Terminal products for China’s Silk Road. After announcing their partnership late last year, CIMC IOMT and Globe Tracker are now producing smart containers for CIMC customers. CIMC’s Yangzhou Tonglee Special Container, Qingdao CIMC Special Reefer Co. Ltd and Nantong CIMC Transportation and Storage co, Ltd. are the first divisions within CIMC to be selling the smart products. “The goal is to have all CIMC divisions supplying the container shipping, trucking, railway and logistics industries with global tracking, monitoring and remote asset management services and equipment.

A Chief Engineer who was held by Somali pirates for eight months will be the main speaker at a session on piracy at the WISTA UK Forum, running as part of London International Shipping Week, 9-13 September 2013. Chirag Bahri, now the India and South Asia regional representative for the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Program, who will give a unique insight into his experience of surviving captivity by Somali pirates. Mr Bahri had worked on bulk carriers and oil and chemical tankers since he went to sea in 2004.

Cammell Laird Rescue Attempt in Danger

The British government's attempts to save 1,500 jobs at struggling shipbuilder Cammell Laird were apparently in grave danger on Wednesday after the chairman of a cruise firm offering Cammell a lifeline contract reportedly said the deal looked dead. "We have been offered impossible terms. I do not want to be the one to bring bad news but you cannot keep pushing water up a hill indefinitely," Luxus chairman Jim Davis reportedly said. It was also reported that the shipbuilder is undergoing further difficulties, specifically that the government was now insisting on a $150 million performance bond to protect itself should the investment fail. With assets of only $110 million, Cammell would most likely not be able to secure banking support for such a bond.

Profitability Of Bulk Shipping Dependent On Safety

Bulk shipping has been under the international microscope of late, with spectacular structural failures resulting in sudden loss of lives and ships, vexing designers, builders and owners alike as to the solution to structural and operational problems. Last week industry experts discussed another matter near and dear to bulk shipper's hearts, the future profitability of the depressed bulk shipping business. The overriding message: bulk shipping profitability is inextricably linked to safety and environmental controls. Removing poor quality operators through strict enforcement of international regulations could reduce the capacity oversupply that has caused low freight rates in the tanker and bulk shipping sectors, they said at a London Conference organized by the City University.
