Horizon Lines To Expand Gulf Service

Horizon Lines announced that it will expand its Gulf service to offer shippers a Tuesday sailing every other week from Jacksonville to San Juan. Adding the Jacksonville call also creates a high-speed, over-the-weekend marine option through Houston for cargo bound for southeastern destinations along the Eastern Seaboard. Lugger Tug: Form, Function & Repeat Orders

Shaping a vessel’s design and construction to the its function is the aim of most commercial boat building. Often, the demonstration of success is in how the boat does its job and makes money for the owner, and the definitive proof of good design and construction is defined by the owner’s return to the original yard for a sister ship. Fleet-owner Stan Cvitanovic of Cvitanovic Boat Service, Inc and shipyard owner Joe Rodriguez have demonstrated this once again with the late 2012 delivery of the lugger tug Ana Maria C. A sister ship to the George C delivered earlier in 2012 (Cummins Hotip#656) the boat has the same aft house design on a 67.5 by 26-foot hull.

Horizon Lines Names Rodriguez as Vice President

Horizon Lines has announced that Joe Rodriguez has been named Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Eastern Region, for the company's Horizon Lines, LLC operating subsidiary. Mr. Rodriguez will oversee all sales activity, pricing and marketing in the eastern half of the United States and Puerto Rico, reporting directly to Brian Taylor, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Commercial Officer of Horizon Lines, Inc. Working Shallow Draft In the Gulf of Mexico

Rodriguez Boat Builders, of Bayou LaBatre, Ala., will deliver one more of their popular lugger tugs to Central Boat Rental of Morgan City, La., at the end October. Designed for the specialized tasks of supporting shallow water oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico they are as much supply boat as tug. Joe Rodriguez explains that the 65 by 24-ft. boat can work in water as shallow as five ft. While it features a model bow for open water work, it is designed to push a supply barge as well as to tow rigs and equipment from place to place. It also can transport liquids with tankage for 9,000 gallons of fuel and 12,000 gallons on potable water. Propulsion for the new boat, the Miss KerriLyn, is provided by a pair of Cummins N14 engines rated for 480 hp each at 1,800 rpm.

Rodriguez Building Twin-Screw Shrimpers

Rodriguez Shipyard in Bayou LaBatre, Ala. is enjoying a busy season with a twin-screw shrimper currently under construction for a late November delivery. The new boat, for owner Steve Nguyan, will be similar to the Lucky B delivered to Louisiana customer Ba Nguyan last August. At 98 by 26 by 12-ft., the boats, are each powered by a pair of Cummins 6-cylinder KTA19 M3 engines rated for 600 hp at 1800 RPM. turning into twin disc 5202 gears with 6.1:1 reductions. MSST to be Commissioned in Hampton Roads

The Coast Guard’s newest weapon against terrorism will be commissioned in a formal ceremony 9:30 a.m. Friday at Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, Va. Representative Jo Ann Davis (R-VA) will be the guest speaker for the commissioning ceremony. Atlantic Area Commander Vice Adm. James Hull will be the presiding official. Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) 91102, the second of six Coast Guard anti-terrorism/force protection teams to be established as a direct result of the Sept. 11 attacks, will be commissioned after completing an intensive four-week initial training course at Camp Lejeune, N.C., which culminated in a 36-hour exercise in the port of Wilmington, N.C., last month.
