Polar Code Focus at Arctic Conference

The Polar Code has been under development at the IMO for a considerable length of time but will reach fruition during 2014 after which it will be offered to the various nations to ratify. The Code seeks to provide a common reference for those ship owners, designers and – more importantly, perhaps – the ship users who will be operating inside the Arctic or Antarctic regions. The South Polar Region is already covered for a host of aspects by the Antarctic Treaty which has now been in force for many years.

'Shipping & Climate' Change: Upcoming IMarEST Lecture

‘Shipping and Climate Change: how Science can aid an industry that emits more CO2 than the UK’ is second in the ‘Sea Changes Lecture Series’. The series, organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) in association with University College London (UCL), aims to examine the relationship between marine science, technology and engineering. ‘Shipping and Climate Change: how Science can aid an industry that emits more CO2 than the UK’, will take place in the Sir Ambrose Fleming Lecture Theatre, UCL, London WC1E 7JE on Monday 18 March, 2013. IMarEST President's Lecture Focuses on Failure

Engineering failures in the marine industry certainly cost time and resources to correct and, sadly, sometimes resulting in loss of life. At his President’s Day Lecture, Professor John Carlton FREng, Professor of Marine Engineering, City University London and the 109th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), will retrospectively discuss some of the marine failures that he has encountered, with the aim of teasing out the underlying issues that have contributed to their causes. The President’s Lecture will be held Tuesday 11 October at IET London in Savoy Place, London WC2. Tea will be served from 17.30, the President’s Lecture will begin at 18.00 and a Reception will follow at 19.00.

2011 IMarEST Arctic Shipping and Offshore Technology Forum

This fall, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) will sponsor the IMarEST Arctic Shipping and Offshore Technology Forum 2011, including the 1st Annual IMarEST ClassNK Lecture. The conference, to be held in central London, will consider Arctic Shipping Technology on Wednesday, October 5, and Arctic Offshore and Energy Technology on Thursday, October 6. The 1st Annual IMarEST ClassNK Lecture will take place on the first day of the conference.
