Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, announced on Feb. 2, that it has been awarded a contract to support the Naval Systems Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) in providing technical and management services in all technical disciplines required to design and support the full spectrum of naval ship types. The award, a cost-plus, fixed-fee delivery order under the NAVSEA SeaPort Enhanced (SeaPort-e) contract, has a potential value of $391m over up to five years and extends Alion’s 35 years of continuous support to SEA 05. Anyboat Marine Electronics has received ABS certification as a radio technician external specialist to conduct GMDSS radio station surveys, for ABS classed vessels. ABS approval included a review of Anyboat's Quality Assurance System, an audit of their facilities and a practical demonstration of services. Clipper Navigation, Inc. and John J. Goodrich Corporation is a member of the Raytheon-led team recently selected by the U.S. Navy to finalize preliminary designs of a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) -- the next- generation surface combatant. University of New Orleans (UNO) researcher Al Daech is afraid of heights; not a good phobia to have when your research involves space shuttles, fuel tanks, and other, big, space-age equipment. He's been trying to conquer his fears since 1981. That's when his work on corrosion fighting collided with his fear of heights. As a Martin Marietta (now called Lockheed Martin) consultant, Daech found himself on a narrow bit of scaffolding 450 ft. in the air, inspecting one of the external fuel tanks on STS-I Columbia, the first space shuttle. Three days before the launch, a pool table-size blister formed in the external tank of the STS-I. Daech's inspection showed an oily rag wiped across the tank caused the blister. He and a crew immediately went to work.

John J. McMullen, maritime industry icon, former owner of the New Jersey Devils and the Houston Astros, died September 16 at the age of 87. McMullen founded John J. McMullen and Associates (JJMA) in 1957, a naval architectural and engineering firm that once occupied the 30th floor of One World Trade Center in Manhattan. At first the firm concentrated on ship containerization and bulk transportation, but it soon became noted for naval engineering and ship design.
