Coast Guard Foundation Honors Heroes

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of Coast Guard members and their families, will hold its 20th annual tribute to the United States Coast Guard Seventh District on November 8th, 2013, at the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. During the event, the Coast Guard Foundation will provide a special honor to the members of a Clearwater-based helicopter crew for the heroism, dedication and aviation professionalism they displayed on January 18, 2013 while saving the lives of seven mariners from the 170-foot research vessel Seaprobe, 230 nautical miles west of Clearwater, Florida.

Veteran USCG Cutter Transferred to Philippines

The U.S. Coast Guard will transfer a decommissioned 378-foot High Endurance Cutter to the Philippines at 1 p.m. May 22 at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Pier Papa in North Charleston, S.C. The former Coast Guard Cutter Dallas will be transferred in a ceremony presided over by Rear Adm. John Korn, assistant commandant for Acquisition. “Since 1967, Coast Guard Cutter Dallas has served the American people well, from Vietnam and the Pacific to its final Coast Guard patrol in the Mediterranean, where the crew interdicted 4,000 pounds of cocaine and 940 pounds of marijuana,” said Korn.

U.S. Coast Guard Recapitalization Briefing

Uncertainty over budget talks leaves Coast Guard leadership to hedge their bets on future fleet mix, total numbers of hulls and operational capabilities. On Wednesday, members of the media were invited to join Coast Guard senior leadership for a discussion about recent acquisition efforts and the status of recapitalizing the service’s aging fleet. Ingalls Delivers USCG National Security Cutter

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE: HII) said its Ingalls Shipbuilding division delivered the third National Security Cutter to the U.S. Coast Guard. A shipboard ceremony officially transferred ownership of Stratton (WMSL 752) from Ingalls to the Coast Guard. "Today we deliver another great ship to our nation's Coast Guard and celebrate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the designers and builders who make it happen," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Waesche Completes Acceptance Trials

The U.S. Coast Guard’s second National Security Cutter (NSC), Waesche, recently completed four days of rigorous tests called Acceptance Trials to ensure the cutter meets all of its contractual requirements and is ready for delivery. Waesche’s Acceptance Trials were conducted in Pascagoula, Miss., from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, 2009, by the Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). INSURV inspected Waesche to identify any major deficiencies needing correction prior to delivery.

Oil Spills Close Corpus Christi Harbor

The Coast Guard is responding to oil spills at the Valero docks and the Citgo facility located in the Corpus Christi Inner Harbor early this morning. Approximately 168,000 gallons of oil has spilled into the Corpus Christi Ship Channel just west of the Harbor Bridge. Captain of the Port, Capt. John Korn, U.S. Coast Guard, closed the channel and no vessel traffic is being allowed in the harbor. Responders from Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi are on scene overseeing the containment and clean-up of the oil-spills. The Coast Guard received a call from the motor tanker Matt Jacobs of a fire in a 125-foot diameter storm containment tank next to the ship. According to the report, lightning had struck the tank and ignited the waste oil it contained.
