Matson Adjusts Its Sailing Schedule to Increase Whale Safety

U.S.-based Pacific shipping company Matson announced it has adjusted its sailing routes to help reduce the risk of whale strikes off the coast of California.Shipping channels into and out of San Francisco Bay and the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex transit federally protected national marine sanctuaries. Matson Installs Six Scrubbers

The U.S.-based provider of ocean freight transportation services Matson has begun the installation  exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on six vessels deployed in its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express services.The scrubbers installation is  part of its strategy to reduce fleet emissions in line with new worldwide regulations established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that take effect on January 1, 2020. Three of the vessels will receive the new equipment in 2019 and the remaining three in 2020.While new low-sulfur fuels designed to meet the new IMO emission standard have been in development for years in anticipation of the change, there is still uncertainty about their costs and availability.

Matson Launches New U.S. Flag Marshall Islands Service

Matson has launched its new direct U.S. flag service between Honolulu and the Republic of the Marshall Islands ("RMI"), reducing cargo transit times to the RMI from the U.S. mainland by as many as eight days. The new service will call at three ports in the RMI - Kwajalein, Ebeye and Majuro every 17 days. Matson purchased a 700-TEU, U.S.-flagged containership to operate the new service. Christened Kamokuiki, or 'small island or vessel' in the Hawaiian language,  the vessel is well suited to serving island communities with two 45 ton cranes onboard…

Cox Takes over as Matson Board Chairman

Matson, Inc. president and chief executive officer Matthew J. Cox will succeed retiring chairman of the board Walter A. Dods, the company announced today. The appointment becomes effective at the end of the company's annual shareholders’ meeting today, as Dods retires in accordance with the company's corporate governance guidelines limiting board members’ age. “In my nearly 30 years associated with Matson, I've never felt stronger about its leadership and long-term prospects,” Dods said.

Matson Senior VP Hoppes to Retire

Dave Hoppes, Matson’s senior vice president, ocean services, will retire March 31, 2015, the company announced. John Lauer, currently vice president, Transpacific services at the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., will succeed Hoppes as senior vice president, ocean services, effective March 31, 2015. The company also announced that Chris Scott, currently director, Asia at Matson Navigation Company, will succeed Lauer as vice president, Transpacific services at Matson Navigation Company, effective March 31, 2015, as part of the transition plan.
