Portland (LPD 27) Completes Builder's Sea Trials

Amphibious transport dock Portland (LPD 27) being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has completed her first set of sea trials. Ingalls’ test and trials team spent four days in the Gulf of Mexico operating the 11th San Antonio-class ship and demonstrating its systems. Major testing conducted during builder’s trials include anchor-handling, ballast/de-ballast of the ship’s well deck, detect-to-engage, full power ahead and astern and steering demonstrations. Ingalls’ shipbuilders are now preparing Portland for acceptance trials in August, when the U.S.

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Navy to Commission Amphibious Transport Dock John P. Murtha

The Navy will commission the amphibious transport dock ship John P. Murtha (LPD 26), Saturday, Oct. 8, during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. The ship is named in honor of John P. Murtha, who served his country both as a Marine and in the halls of congress. Murtha served in the Marine Corps for 37 years and saw service in the Korean War and in Vietnam, a tour that earned him the Bronze Star with Valor device, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Murtha represented Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District from 1974 until his death in 2010. The Honorable Nancy Pelosi will deliver the ceremony’s principal address.

Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), christened the amphibious transport dock Portland (LPD 27) on May 21 in front of approximately 1,000 guests. U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Christopher Owens, director of the U.S. Navy’s expeditionary warfare division, was the keynote speaker. “Marines love these ships,” he said. “They are perhaps the most versatile ships in the fleet. Portland is the 11th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, named for the largest city in the state of Oregon.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of the future John P. Murtha (LPD 26) during a ceremony at the Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) shipyard, May 13. Built at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division, LPD 26 is the 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock built by HII for the U.S. Navy. “This is the 10th San Antonio-class ship we've delivered, and our Sailors and Marine Corps will be receiving another highly capable platform in John P. Murtha,” said Capt. Darren Plath, LPD 17 class program manager.

John P. Murtha Completes Acceptance Trials

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced the completion of acceptance sea trials for the company’s 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, John P. Murtha (LPD 26). The ship, built at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division, spent six days with the test and trials team performing more than 200 trial events that included both an in-port and underway portion. “This was a significant test at sea for LPD 26, and the ship performed well,” said Kari Wilkinson, Ingalls’ LPD 26 program manager.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ ( HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division announced that Richard Schenk, vice president of program management, will retire on July 1 after 33 years of service. He will be succeeded by Kari Wilkinson, effective May 23. Ingalls also announced that Mike Duthu has been promoted to vice president, business development, effective immediately. “Richard has made significant contributions to our past, current and future business objectives, and we owe him our gratitude and thanks,” Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias said.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced the successful sea trials of the company’s 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, John P. Murtha (LPD 26). The ship, built at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division, spent four days in the Gulf of Mexico last week with Ingalls’ test and trials team operating the ship and performing more than 200 test events. “Overall the builder’s trial was successful, and the ship performed well,” said Kari Wilkinson, Ingalls’ LPD 26 program manager.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division hosted Adm. John Richardson Thursday as part of his visit to shipyards in the region. This was his first visit to Ingalls as Chief of Naval Operations. Richardson received updates on Ingalls’ shipbuilding programs and toured the facility. “We certainly appreciate Admiral Richardson taking the time out of his busy schedule to visit our shipyard to see the significant and high-quality work our shipbuilders are performing on a daily basis,” said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias.

Ingalls Secures Advance Procurement Contract for LPD 28

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced last week that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $200 million, cost-plus-fixed-fee advance procurement contract from the U.S. Navy for LPD 28, the 12th amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio (LPD 17) class. The funds will be used to purchase long-lead-time material and major equipment, including main engines, diesel generators, deck equipment, shafting, propellers, valves and other long-lead systems. “This funding demonstrates the priority the Navy places on Ingalls getting started on this important ship…

Reps. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., and Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., visited Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division Wednesday. The congressmen, both members of the House Armed Services Committee, met with shipbuilders and were briefed on the construction processes for the four different classes of military ships built at Ingalls. The Congressmen toured the shipyard and visited various shops where ship units are assembled. They also were given a tour of the amphibious transport dock John P. Murtha (LPD 26), which will launch later this year.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) reported fourth quarter 2012 revenues of $1.82 billion, up 5.1 percent from the same period last year. Segment operating income for the fourth quarter was $140 million, compared to $127 million in the same period last year. Ingalls Shipbuilding to Build 10th Amphibious Transport Dock

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE:HII) announced a U.S. Navy contract awarded to its Ingalls Shipbuilding division for the construction of the 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. The contract, worth $1.5 billion, will be used to build John P. Murtha (LPD 26), with construction expected to start in May. Huntington Ingalls Industries, America's largest military shipbuilder, was previously a business sector of Northrop Grumman Corp. until effectively separating on March 31 in a spinoff of the company to shareholders.

Huntington Ingalls Reports 2Q Earnings

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. reported second quarter 2011 sales of $1.56 billion, down 2.9 percent from the same period last year, and operating margin of 5.8 percent, up from negative 1.2 percent last year. Second quarter diluted earnings per share was $0.80, up from a loss of $0.23 in 2010. Cash provided by operating activities in the second quarter of 2011 was $186 million, up $91 million, or 96 percent, over the same period last year. Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding has authenticated the keel of the company's 11th amphibious transport dock ship, Portland (LPD 27). U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James Amos, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and principal speaker for the ceremony, noted the first-in-class USS San Antonio (LPD 17) was presently off the coast of Yemen alongside another Ingalls-built ship, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). Huntington Ingalls Reports Strong Fourth Quarter

Newport News, Va. -- Huntington Ingalls Industries reported fourth quarter 2011 sales of $1.74 billion, consistent with the fourth quarter of 2010. The impact of a $10 million non-cash goodwill impairment finalization adjustment resulted in reported net earnings of $69 million for the quarter and $1.39 diluted earnings per share on a GAAP basis. Excluding the goodwill impairment adjustment in the fourth quarter, total operating margin was 6.6 percent, up from 6.0 percent for the same period last year, and diluted earnings per share was $1.19 for the quarter. For the full year 2011, sales were $6.58 billion, down 2.2 percent from 2010.

Ingalls Reports Third Quarter Results

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), a company that designs, builds and maintains nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and provides after-market services for military ships around the globe, reported third quarter 2013 revenues of $1.64 billion, up 2.6% from the same period last year. Third quarter diluted earnings per share was $1.36, compared to $0.26 in the same period of 2012. Segment operating income in the third quarter was $142 million, compared to $89 million in the same period last year.
