Jo Johnson Becomes UK Shipping Minister

UK Prime Minister Theresa May reshuffled the cabinet replacing John Hayes as the shipping minister with Jo Johnson. Later the government sources confirmed that Jo Johnson was appointed Minister of State at the Department for Transport and Minister for London on 9 January 2018. Jo was Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation from July 2016 to January 2018. He was elected Conservative MP for Orpington in May 2010 and re-elected in May 2015. May announced her intention to refresh the cabinet last week.

Propeller Milestone Achieved By U.S. Navy

The U.S. Navy's drive during the past decade to become more efficient on both the ship contracting and life cycle management sides has proven to be much more than mere talk. The "new" Navy is embodied in the current LPD-17 project, and U.S. Navy senior officers and engineers recently marked a critical milestone in ship research on January 6, 2000, wrapping up a successful phase in the testing of a full-scale propeller for the USS San Antonio (LPD-17) Class amphibious transport dock ship. The tests verify that a new compact design for the LPD-17 CPP meets the seven-year service life cycle requirements. The 17 million cycles completed at the ceremony show that this new design exceeds requirements and that the service life could be extended twofold.

Navy Achieves New Propeller Milestone

The U.S. Navy has marked a critical milestone in ship research as it wrapped up a successful phase in the testing of a full-scale propeller for USS San Antonio amphibious transport dock ship. The tests verify a new compact design for the LPD-17 controllable pitch propeller meets the seven-year service life cycle requirements. The 17 million cycles completed show this new design exceeds requirements and the service life could be extended twofold. The Naval Sea Systems Command program could lead to a significant saving for the Navy in overhaul costs for the new propeller. The hub and blades, manufactured of nickel-aluminum-bronze and steel, constitute a unique design.

Need a Lift?

Not every ship repair facility has a drydock or marine railway. But thanks to a Sturgeon Bay, Wis.-based company, shipbuilders and repair yards from small to large can get a real lift. Marine Travelift builds boat hoists, self-propelled transporters, and marine forklifts, with more than 3,500 units delivered worldwide, and can be found at waterfronts all around the world. “Our boat hoists range from 15 ton all the way up to 1,000 ton capacity,” said Jason Johnson, North American sales manager. “Marine Travellift has been involved with shipyards since the 1980s.

GE Ships LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine for US Navy

GE's Marine Solutions division said it has shipped a LM2500 marine gas turbine propulsion module that will help power the U.S. Navy's 75th DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division will construct this new destroyer with U.S. Navy Flight III upgrades incorporated. Palmer Johnson, Atlantic Dry Dock Team Up

Palmer Johnson Savannah and Atlantic Dry Dock Corp. have entered into a joint effort via a letter of intent for the establishment of Palmer Johnson @Atlantic (PJA) on the site of the 60-acre Atlantic Shipyard facility near Jacksonville, Fla. The new Palmer Johnson division will specialize in providing service and refit for yachts measuring 197 ft. (60 m) or larger. According to Phil Friedman, president and CEO of Palmer Johnson, the new venture will be able to haul, service and refit basically any yacht in the world. "The combination of Palmer Johnson's highly skilled finish craftsmanship and yacht project management expertise with Atlantic's extensive shipyard experience and facilities will produce a capability second to none in the world," Friedman said.

Crowley Receives Customer Service Award

Crowley Liner Services has been honored with SC Johnson's "Outstanding Customer Service Award" for 2001. Crowley's Gunter Majzner, senior account manager, and Greig Havern, senior account executive, recently accepted the award on behalf of the company at SC Johnson's corporate headquarters in Racine, Wis. Crowley was selected for this award by maintaining the high levels of customer service required in SC Johnson's carrier partnership program. Performance criteria in which Crowley excelled included sailing schedule integrity, documentation, customer service and equipment availability and condition. "This is wonderful recognition for the corporation, and in particular all of the Crowley employees who service the SC Johnson account," Majzner said.

Palmer Johnson to Aquire Assets of Intermarine Savannah

Palmer Johnson Savannah Inc., a member of Palmer Johnson Yachts group of companies, has signed a purchase agreement to acquire substantially all assets of BCT Real Estate and Savannah Shipyard, operating as Intermarine Savannah. Bpalmer Johnson’s acquisition of the 21-acre site in Savannah, a covered graving dock 535 ft. by 73 ft., capable of drydocking just about any yacht in the world, a high-roofed main construction building more than 600 ft. long, 700 ft. of covered docks and a 1,000-ton marine railway.

Palmer Johnson Opens New Office

According to reports, Palmer Johnson has opened the Isle of Wight office, and megayacht production could start soon. The design and engineering team opened the office at Venture Quays, East Cowes. Palmer Johnson builds some of the fastest. The Isle of Wight Economic Partnership and SEEDA have been working with Palmer Johnson since 2006, and hope to finalize this investment by the end of 2007. Marine Travelift Promotes Johnson

Jason Johnson was promoted to North American Sales Manager for Marine Travelift, Inc. in Sturgeon Bay.  Johnson will be responsible for business development and marine sales in the Americas for the Company. Johnson was hired by Marine Travelift in 2008 as a Sales Engineer.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marina Management from the Maine Maritime Academy, and serves on the IMI (International Marina Institute) Advisory Committee.

J. Ray McDermott, S.A. (J. Ray) announced the appointment of Stephen M. Johnson as President and Chief Executive Officer of J. Ray, effective January 1, 2010. Johnson is the current President and Chief Operating Officer of McDermott International, Inc. (McDermott), J. Ray’s parent company. He succeeds Robert A. Deason, who, as previously announced, will retire at the end of the year. Separately, McDermott announced that it plans to separate its operating subsidiaries, The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) and J. Ray, into two independent, publicly traded companies.

Navy to Christen Guided Missile Destroyer

The Navy will christen its newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), Saturday, April 2, during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The ship will be christened by the ship sponsor, Georgeanne McRaven. The Honorable Sean Stackley, assistant secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition will deliver the principal address. Palmer Johnson Chairman Emeritus Mike Kelsey, Sr., Dies

The people of Palmer Johnson Yachts and family, friends and colleagues from around the world are mourning the loss of Chairman Emeritus Mike Kelsey, Sr., who died Sunday, July 21. Mike Kelsey, Sr., was large responsible for building the company into one of the world’s leading custom yacht brands, as a yacht builder and also a provider of yacht refit/repair services, brokerage, chandlery and related support services. Kelsey’s son, Mike Kelsey, Jr., who is now worldwide director of sales for the company, said “I am so lucky to have had him for a dad and teacher. He taught so many people about our business. Phil Friedman, current president and CEO of Palmer Johnson, said that Mike Kelsey represented the true spirit of Palmer Johnson. “We’re all very saddened,” he said.

Palmer Johnson To Acquire Two Companies

Palmer Johnson, Inc. announced this week the signing of a letter of intent to acquire two companies: Richman Marine, Inc., a worldwide yacht chandlery company, and Global Yacht Fuel Inc., an international fuel bunkering company. Both companies are based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. According to Palmer Johnson’s President and Chief Executive, Phil Friedman, the acquisitions expand the size and scope of Palmer Johnson’s On Call yacht chandlery and logistical support unit. With the latest acquisitions, Palmer Johnson On Call becomes one of the most comprehensive yacht service and support operations available.

Bath Iron Works Lays Keel of DDG 1002

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works celebrated the keel laying of the third and final Zumwalt-class destroyer, future USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002), on January 30. The U.S. Navy named the ship in honor of President Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, credited with enacting major civil rights, education and public welfare legislation, including the Voting Rights Act and the creation of the Head Start Program and Medicare. President Johnson’s daughters, Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson, are the ship sponsors. A special steel plate containing the initials of the sisters was prepared for the ceremony. Assisted by Timothy Trask, a 30-year Bath Iron Works welder, the sponsors authenticated the laying of the keel by striking welding arcs onto the steel plate.

Johnson Joins Foss in HSQE Role

Grant Johnson has joined Foss Maritime as Vice President of Health, Safety, Quality and Environment (HSQE), responsible for overseeing, growing and strengthening HSQE performance. Johnson arrives at Foss from TechnipFMC, an international energy services provider, where he served in various capacities including Director of Worldwide Fleet Management, Asset Technical Director, and most recently as manager of TechnipFMC's contract with Marine Well Containment Company. Before joining TechnipFMC, Johnson held various positions with BP's Alaskan, Shipping and U.S.

Deck Equipment Completed

Timberland Equipment Ltd./Almon Johnson Ltd., in cooperation with TUGZ International, has completed the deck equipment for TUGZ Z-1, Z-2 and Z-3. Each new tug has been supplied with a Johnson Type Series "650" Double Drum Hawser Winch, designed to store 450 ft. of 2.25 in. diameter synthetic rope and brake holding of 350,000 lbs. On the aft of each tug will be a Johnson Type Series "651" Single Drum Towing Winch with a storage capacity of 2,000 ft. of 2 in. diameter IWRC wire rope with a linepull of 60,000 lbs. and a brake holding of 300,000 lbs. Both winches will run on a Johnson Type Electro-Hydraulic Power Unit mounted below-deck.

Wesmar Wins ABS DP1 Approval

Wesmar announced that their Model V2-20NS Vortex dual prop all stainless steel bow thruster has been given ABS approval for dynamic positioning applications (DP1). The horsepower rating for the V2-20NS is 75 to 150, and the company anticipates similar approval soon for their V2-26 and V2-36 systems, which operate on vessels up to 350 HP. Wesmar’s polished stainless steel props are standard, and stainless steel seal with bearing carriers sync with the stainless steel casting. Ingalls Launches US Navy Destroyer Ralph Johnson

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), the company’s 30th Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) guided missile destroyer, on Saturday. Ingalls has built and delivered 28 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. There are currently four more under construction at Ingalls, including Ralph Johnson, which is scheduled to be christened in the spring of 2016. John Finn (DDG 113) was christened in May and is expected to undergo sea trials in 2016.

Borr Drilling Aims to Expand Fleet, Keep Costs Low

Borr Drilling, the Norwegian drilling start-up, which listed on the Oslo exchange on Wednesday, said it aimed to expand its fleet, taking advantage of its low cost base. The start-up, launched last year and backed by the world's biggest oil service firm Schlumberger, said it aimed to have the lowest cash break-even costs in the industry and would take advantage of current low prices for rigs. "We have no debt," Borr's Chief Executive Simon Johnson told Reuters after its shares started trading on Oslo's main market. They were previously listed on the over-the-counter market. "That might change in the future, depending on the financing needs, but we can control what we pay for assets," Johnson said.
