Blount/Barker Pens Contract For Marine Tug

Blount/Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with Buchanan Marine, New Haven, Conn., for the construction of an 85 ft. (25.9 m), 2,400 hp all welded, Twin Screw tug. Powered by twin CAT 3512 engines, twin disc gears and two 65 kW generators, the tug's hull and superstructure plans have been contracted via Bristol Harbor Marine Design, which will utilize CAD/CNC technology for all lofting and cutting. The tug will be keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 70-78-in., as well as two pushing winches and an Almond Johnson towing machine. Used for harbor and ocean towing of bulk material barges, the tug is scheduled to commence construction in early April for a November completion.

Buchanan Taps Blount/Barker for New Tug

The construction of this vessel was based on the classic Blount design of the tugs Pathfinder and Usher built in 1969. The hull and superstructure was modified by Bristol Harbor Group utilizing CNC cutting technology for lofting and cutting.

Roehrig Maritime Adds Tug to Fleet

Roehrig Maritime has purchased Tug HEIDI E. ROEHRIG, formerly the Weeks Marine Tug Matthew. The Heidi is 3300 HP, with a 105 ft. LOA, 32 ft. beam, and a 13.6 ft. draft. She has an Alman Johnson Tow Machine with 2000 ft. of 2 inch wire, and has 48,000 gallons of fuel capacity. Roehrig Maritime LLC was founded in 1990 and operates seven well maintained tugs ranging from 2400 horsepower to 6000 horsepower. The company's success has been based on an operating philosophy of providing superior customer service by combining well maintained tug boats with skilled mariners. Roehrig Maritime provides towing services along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

Jo Johnson Becomes UK Shipping Minister

UK Prime Minister Theresa May reshuffled the cabinet replacing John Hayes as the shipping minister with Jo Johnson. Later the government sources confirmed that Jo Johnson was appointed Minister of State at the Department for Transport and Minister for London on 9 January 2018. Jo was Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation from July 2016 to January 2018. He was elected Conservative MP for Orpington in May 2010 and re-elected in May 2015. May announced her intention to refresh the cabinet last week.

Liberia Opens Maritime Training Institute

The Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI) was officially opened by Liberia President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during an inauguration ceremony in Marshall City, Liberia, on January 5. The facility is named after John G Bestman, former Liberian finance minister and a member of the board of governors of the Central Bank of Liberia. Under the management of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), LMTI has undergone a massive renovation and facility modernization program over the past two years, resulting in the creation of a new campus and state-of-the-art facilities.

Stevens Appoints New President

The Board of Directors of Stevens Towing Co., Inc., elected W. Johnson Stevens, III, to serve as the new president of the company, succeeding his father, William J. “Bill” Stevens, Jr. Bill will serve as chairman of the board and as chief executive officer. The new posts reflect a planned leadership transition for the younger Stevens, son of the former president, to become the fourth generation of the Stevens family to head Stevens Towing. Johnson joined the company in 2007 and has served in a broad range of operations and management positions there over the years.

Deck Equipment Completed

Timberland Equipment Ltd./Almon Johnson Ltd., in cooperation with TUGZ International, has completed the deck equipment for TUGZ Z-1, Z-2 and Z-3. Each new tug has been supplied with a Johnson Type Series "650" Double Drum Hawser Winch, designed to store 450 ft. of 2.25 in. diameter synthetic rope and brake holding of 350,000 lbs. On the aft of each tug will be a Johnson Type Series "651" Single Drum Towing Winch with a storage capacity of 2,000 ft. of 2 in. diameter IWRC wire rope with a linepull of 60,000 lbs. and a brake holding of 300,000 lbs. Both winches will run on a Johnson Type Electro-Hydraulic Power Unit mounted below-deck.

One Person Missing After Boat Capsized

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket. Coast Guard crews aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and helicopter are searching on scene along with state and local partners…

OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design

Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.

Washburn & Doughty Launches Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg, built by Washburn & Doughty for Cape Fear Towing Company of Wilmington, N.C., will be primarily used for docking shops and coastal towing. Fort Bragg was designed by Washburn & Doughty's naval architect and vice-president, Bruce Washburn, and built to ABS and USCG standards, but not classed. The vessel is powered by two Caterpillar 3516 electronic main engines rated at 2,200 hp at 1,600 rpm. These engines power two Ulstein model 1650H Z-drives, with a combined capacity to produce 54 tons of bollard pull. The Z-drives are outfitted with 90 in. Bird Johnson stainless steel propellers, kort nozzles with stainless steel liners and hydraulic steering controls. The vessel features a NETEC 30 in. electric capstan on the aft deck and a NETEC hydraulic escort winch on the fore deck.

GE Ships LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine for US Navy

GE's Marine Solutions division said it has shipped a LM2500 marine gas turbine propulsion module that will help power the U.S. Navy's 75th DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division will construct this new destroyer with U.S. Navy Flight III upgrades incorporated. Each DDG destroyer features four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines in a combined gas turbine and gas turbine (COGAG) configuration. "Since 1991 - for just the U.S.

Palmer Johnson, Atlantic Dry Dock Team Up

Palmer Johnson Savannah and Atlantic Dry Dock Corp. have entered into a joint effort via a letter of intent for the establishment of Palmer Johnson @Atlantic (PJA) on the site of the 60-acre Atlantic Shipyard facility near Jacksonville, Fla. The new Palmer Johnson division will specialize in providing service and refit for yachts measuring 197 ft. (60 m) or larger. According to Phil Friedman, president and CEO of Palmer Johnson, the new venture will be able to haul, service and refit basically any yacht in the world. "The combination of Palmer Johnson's highly skilled finish craftsmanship and yacht project management expertise with Atlantic's extensive shipyard experience and facilities will produce a capability second to none in the world," Friedman said.

Autonomous Workboats: The Future is Now

Sea Machines is bringing autonomous self-driving systems to the world of workboats. At an impressive virtual reality demonstration seen late last year and then again at a frigid, late winter visit to the Boston waterfront, the future of workboat technology became all too evident for this writer. The late George Allen, former head coach of the Washington Redskins football team perhaps said it best when he coined the phrase, “The future is now.” If so, then Michael Johnson, the founder of Sea Machines Robotics has brought that reality to the marine industry.

Crowley Receives Customer Service Award

Crowley Liner Services has been honored with SC Johnson's "Outstanding Customer Service Award" for 2001. Crowley's Gunter Majzner, senior account manager, and Greig Havern, senior account executive, recently accepted the award on behalf of the company at SC Johnson's corporate headquarters in Racine, Wis. Crowley was selected for this award by maintaining the high levels of customer service required in SC Johnson's carrier partnership program. Performance criteria in which Crowley excelled included sailing schedule integrity, documentation, customer service and equipment availability and condition. "This is wonderful recognition for the corporation, and in particular all of the Crowley employees who service the SC Johnson account," Majzner said.

Palmer Johnson To Acquire Two Companies

Palmer Johnson, Inc. announced this week the signing of a letter of intent to acquire two companies: Richman Marine, Inc., a worldwide yacht chandlery company, and Global Yacht Fuel Inc., an international fuel bunkering company. Both companies are based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. According to Palmer Johnson’s President and Chief Executive, Phil Friedman, the acquisitions expand the size and scope of Palmer Johnson’s On Call yacht chandlery and logistical support unit. With the latest acquisitions, Palmer Johnson On Call becomes one of the most comprehensive yacht service and support operations available.

USCG Uses Skiff Ice Boat to Rescue Injured Man

The U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuated a man off of a dredging barge in Lake Erie near Sandusky, Ohio, Wednesday evening. At approximately 5:45 p.m., a good Samaritan called Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, to report two men on a dredging barge who needed help due to injuries. The barge was 50 yards off shore in water too shallow for a Coast Guard response boat to get to come alongside, so a rescue team traveled to the location by truck. The rescue team launched from the shore in a skiff ice inflatable boat…

Palmer Johnson Chairman Emeritus Mike Kelsey, Sr., Dies

The people of Palmer Johnson Yachts and family, friends and colleagues from around the world are mourning the loss of Chairman Emeritus Mike Kelsey, Sr., who died Sunday, July 21. Mike Kelsey, Sr., was large responsible for building the company into one of the world’s leading custom yacht brands, as a yacht builder and also a provider of yacht refit/repair services, brokerage, chandlery and related support services. Kelsey’s son, Mike Kelsey, Jr., who is now worldwide director of sales for the company, said “I am so lucky to have had him for a dad and teacher. He taught so many people about our business. Phil Friedman, current president and CEO of Palmer Johnson, said that Mike Kelsey represented the true spirit of Palmer Johnson. “We’re all very saddened,” he said.

Palmer Johnson to Aquire Assets of Intermarine Savannah

Palmer Johnson Savannah Inc., a member of Palmer Johnson Yachts group of companies, has signed a purchase agreement to acquire substantially all assets of BCT Real Estate and Savannah Shipyard, operating as Intermarine Savannah. Bpalmer Johnson’s acquisition of the 21-acre site in Savannah, a covered graving dock 535 ft. by 73 ft., capable of drydocking just about any yacht in the world, a high-roofed main construction building more than 600 ft. long, 700 ft. of covered docks and a 1,000-ton marine railway.

Palmer Johnson Opens New Office

According to reports, Palmer Johnson has opened the Isle of Wight office, and megayacht production could start soon. The design and engineering team opened the office at Venture Quays, East Cowes. Palmer Johnson builds some of the fastest. The Isle of Wight Economic Partnership and SEEDA have been working with Palmer Johnson since 2006, and hope to finalize this investment by the end of 2007. Marine Travelift Promotes Johnson

Jason Johnson was promoted to North American Sales Manager for Marine Travelift, Inc. in Sturgeon Bay.  Johnson will be responsible for business development and marine sales in the Americas for the Company. Johnson was hired by Marine Travelift in 2008 as a Sales Engineer.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marina Management from the Maine Maritime Academy, and serves on the IMI (International Marina Institute) Advisory Committee.
