IANA Introduces Resource Center

The Intermodal Association of North America has created a resource center, available on its website, to provide a wide range of information for prospective intermodal users and those who are new to the industry. The Intermodal Freight Resource Center offers educational tools, industry information, research and other content. The “What is Intermodal” page overviews the industry’s scope and benefits. Additional sections include intermodal network and terminal information, data & statistics, a glossary of industry terms, studies and research and links to organizations that provide related services. “The Intermodal Freight Resource Center is a tool that showcases the viability and value of intermodal service to multiple audiences,” said Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA.

U.S. Intermodal Volumes Rose 4.5% in Q1/15

According to a report issued by the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), domestic intermodal volumes rose 4.5 % in the first quarter of 2015, buoyed by domestic containers, which rose 6.5 percent in a quarter-over-quarter comparison. Total intermodal shipments rose 2 percent over last year’s Q1 volumes, despite port congestion issues that impacted international container traffic. “Monthly first quarter results were uneven due to the issues on the West Coast,” said Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA. Domestic intermodal results were particularly impressive in view of the challenges facing the import sector. A significant share of the freight carried by domestic intermodal is transloaded from 40’ containers that come through a port.

Domestic container volume continued its steady performance in the second quarter of 2013 with 9 percent year-over-year gains, largely attributable to a strong big box segment, with total intermodal traffic rising by 2.4 percent for the quarter, reports industry trade association IANA. International volume was unable to build on its solid Q1 growth, falling 1.3 percent in Q2 after posting 3 percent gains in Q1. This decline can be attributed to surprisingly weak shipments in June, with loads falling 6 percent from a year ago.
