The Port of Singapore has registered a record three billion gross tonnage (GT) in annual vessel arrival tonnage.The record was reached with the arrival of the 8,628 TEU, 98,799 GT Singapore-flagged container ship, ONE Olympus, at the Pasir Panjang Terminal on December 25, 2023.The annual vessel arrival tonnage at the Port of Singapore for 2023 is expected to reach just over three billion GT in 2023, up from 2.83 billion GT in 2022.The record was marked at an event organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and attended by Chee Hong Tat, Acting Minister for Transport.

A tanker berthed at Jurong Port Tank Terminals (JPTT) caught fire on Tuesday, with smoke observed on the forward part of the tanker, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has informed.Singapore Civil Defence Force marine and land-based firefighting forces, MPA patrol craft, and JPTT’s emergency response unit were deployed to put out the fire and ensure navigational safety.As a precautionary measure, operations at the adjacent berths have stopped, and a nearby vessel at the berth has been shifted to the anchorage."The fire was extinguished at about 0925 hours, and the tanker’s crew are all safe and accounted for. There is no damage to the tanks and berths at JPTT.

Singapore port operator Jurong Port has completed its acquisition of a stake in a major oil storage terminal in the city-state from the family behind collapsed oil trader Hin Leong Trading Pte Ltd, a port spokesman said on Saturday.The spokesman said government-owned Jurong Port had completed the purchase of a 41% stake in Universal Terminal from the Lim family. Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Heng Swee Keat, DPM Heng announced the launch of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) ‘digitalPORT@SG’, a digital Portal for One-stop Regulatory Transactions, which is Singapore’s maritime single window system that will serve as a one-stop portal for maritime regulatory and port services transactions.It will be developed in two phases: Phase 1 – users can obtain approval for all arriving and departing ships from three public agencies – MPA, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and the National Environment Agency – through a single portal. The portal will consolidate up to 16 separate forms into a single application.

In conjunction with the ‘Day of Seafarer 2018’, Jurong Port (JP), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) will jointly present 600 gift hampers to ships calling at Singapore. The hampers, containing essential daily items, will reach about 9,000 seafarers as an appreciation for their contributions to the maritime industry and global economy. MPA also contributes a sum of $150,000 annually to support the work of various seafarers’ missions to look out for seafarers’ welfare when they call at our shores.

Jurong Port and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore inked an MoU at the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) Forum 2017 today to jointly pursue R&D in areas such as Smart Multi-Energy Systems, Alternative Energy Source Applications and Environmental Monitoring Solutions. The MoU signing was witnessed by Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health. The MoU, covering a period of five years, will have both parties jointly: (a) Conduct research projects and testbed solutions as part of Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme. A cargo of Malaysian Bintulu condensate bought by Royal Dutch Shell is sailing to New Orleans, Louisiana, a trade source in Asia familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, in what appears to be the first U.S. import of that grade of offshore oil according to Thomson Reuters Trade Flows data. The Polaris, a medium-range vessel, loaded 200,000 barrels of the condensate at Malaysia's Bintulu terminal in early February, before stopping at Singapore's Jurong Port to pick up another parcel, the source said. It sailed west from Jurong in late February toward the United States, around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, Reuters' vessel tracking data show. A Shell spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. U.S. oil imports from Malaysia are rare.

Global maritime welfare charity The Mission to Seafarers outlines emergency support work with surviving crew members of the Thorco Cloud – a general cargo vessel which sank in the Singapore Strait after a collision on December 16. The other vessel involved, chemical tanker Stolt Commitment, received only minor damage and is in a stable condition. Cayman Islands-registered Stolt Commitment and freighter Thorco Cloud bearing the Antigua and Barbuda flag collided in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Singapore Strait.

Charity endurance event ‘Row Around Singapore Island (RASI)’ beats electrical storm and finishes with time triumph, high emotion and VIP celebrations at the finish line. ‘Mission RASI’, took place last week as part of Singapore’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, was successfully completed in 23 hours and 15 minutes – within the tough target time of 24 hours. The project has raised a staggering $450,000 with more donations flooding in daily for global maritime charity The Mission to Seafarers. The bill requiring ocean going ships to switch to low sulfur fuel while at berth in Hong Kong could effectively raise the cost of shipping containers through the city. Under the new Hong Kong Air Pollution Control (Ocean Going Vessels) (Fuel at Berth) Regulation, OGVs will be required to use low-sulphur marine fuel, LNG and any other fuels approved by the Director of Environmental Protection. According to a report in South China Morning Post, the law for greener Hong Kong has raised concerns on who should bear the costs for an environmentally clean port. Several international shipping lines reportedly said that they were studying ways to minimise the hit. Levying a surcharge on their customers remains the most viable option. GAC Singapore announced today it will provide Thorco Shipping with agency services for its vessels calling at Singapore, including the loading and discharging of break-bulk and heavy lift cargoes at Jurong port. The Copenhagen-based Thorco operates a fleet of more than 80 multi-purpose general cargo and heavy lift tweendeck vessels trading worldwide, primarily in the project and break bulk sectors. Thorco has offices in the USA, UK, Germany, Holland, Brazil, Chile, Dubai, India, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Japan.

A group of 40 enthusiasts from the maritime and insurance community in Singapore have come together, to undertake a 24 hour endurance sea challenge, all in aid of the global maritime welfare charity, The Mission to Seafarers. Mission Row Around Singapore Island (RASI), will see two teams in ocean-going rowing boats attempt the 140km journey, taking on the seas and shipping lanes (not to mention two live military firing ranges) to complete a non-stop circumnavigation of the island of Singapore. The event itself will be held during the 50th anniversary year of Singapore’s independence and will also coincide with Singapore Maritime Week occurring between 19 to 25 April 2015.

A total of 51 scholarships worth more than S$1.4 million were awarded this year, as part of continuous outreach and talent development efforts to meet the manpower needs of the growing Singapore maritime industry - an area which contributes to some 7 per cent of the nation's economy. Sponsored by maritime companies and organisations, the MaritimeONE (Maritime Outreach NEtwork) scholarships and Tripartite Maritime Scholarship Scheme (TMSS) support various local and overseas diploma and degree programmes. In all, 40 MaritimeONE and 11 TMSS scholarships were presented at the MaritimeONE Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at the M Hotel Singapore this evening.

Dredging work will be carried out at Keppel Shipyard Benoi Road, off West Jurong Channel, from 28 July to 30 September. Dredging works will be carried out by the grab dredgers. The grab dredgers will be held by 4-point anchoring system and each anchor position will be marked by a yellow buoy, Fl Y 3s. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-metre radius centred at the dredgers. Dredged materials will be transported to the designated dumping ground by the hopper barges. During the operation, the dredgers will be attended by tug boat. The tug boats will be used to shift the dredger. A safety boat will be deployed in the vicinity of the working area to warn other craft of the project.
