Major ports in India together handled 578.86 Million Tonnes (MT) of cargo during April-January 2019, representing a growth of 3.11 per cent, an official statement said.The major ports had handled 561.39 MT cargo in the corresponding period of previous fiscal, the Ministry of Shipping said in a statement."The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.11 per cent and together handled 578.86 MT of cargo during the period April to January, 2019 as against 561.39 MT handled during the corresponding period of previous year," it said.Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled highest volume of traffic of 94.55 mt with 16.33% share. The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.77% and together handled 518.6 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to December, 2018 as against 499.7 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year.According to the press information bureau, govt of India, for the period from April- December 2018, Nine Ports Kolkata (incl. India’s 12 major ports witnessed a 4.83 per cent rise in cargo traffic at 461.21 million tonnes (MT) during April-November of the current fiscal, said the government.These state-run top ports had handled 439.96 MT cargo during the corresponding eight-month period of the last fiscal.For the period from April- November 2018, Nine Ports Kolkata (incl. The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 5.12% and together handled 343.26 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to September, 2018 as against 326.54 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year.According to the government of India, for the period from April ‘17- September 2018, Nine Ports (Kolkata (incl.Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic.The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (19.66%), followed by Cochin(11.51%), Paradip (11.12%),Haldia (10.07%) and Deendayal (10.03%)Kamarajar Port growth was mainly due to increase in traffic of  OtherMisc. The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 4.13% and together handled 231.48 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to July, 2018 as against 222.29 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year.During this period nine Major Ports - Kolkata (incl. Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic.The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (12.18%), followed by Cochin (10.30%), Paradip (8.31%), New Mangalore ( 7.88%) and Kolkata [inc. Haldia] (7.74%). Kamarajar Port growth was mainly due to increase in Other Liquids by 20%, Other Misc. Cargo by 13.30%, POL by 11.30%. and Thermal & Steam Coal by 4.44 % .In Kolkata Port, overall growth was 7.74%.

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.91% and together handled 174.02 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to June, 2018 as against 167.48 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. For the period from April- June 2018, nine ports - Kolkata including Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal (Kandla) Port have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (11.93%), followed by Kolkata including Haldia (10.21%), Paradip (9%), Cochin 7.85%) and Visakhapatnam (7.24%). Kamarajar Port growth was mainly due to increase in Other Liquids by 29.63%, Other Misc. Cargo by 15.06%, POL by 7.51% and Thermal & Steam Coal by 4.93%.

The top 12 major ports in India recorded 2.41 percent growth in cargo handling at 116.26 million tonne (MT) in the first two months of the current fiscal.For the period from April-May 2018, nine ports (Kolkata [including Haldia], Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayalhave) registered positive growth in traffic.The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (11.69 percent), followed by Kolkata [including Haldia] (11.33 percent), Cochin (8.7 percent), Paradip (7.61 percent) and New Mangalore (6.66 percent).Kamarajar Port growth was mainly due to increase in other miscellaneous cargo by 28.16 percent…

The Indian Union Minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari has said that an investment of INR  2500bn (USD 39bn) is being made in Tamil Nadu under Sagarmala program. Of this Rs.39,000 crore will be for port modernization, Rs.55,000 crore for port connectivity and Rs.1,50,000 crore for port led industrialization. The minister said this at Kamarajar Port in Chennai, where he inaugurated several new projects. The projects include a New Container Terminal worth Rs.1270 crore, a new multi cargo terminal worth Rs.151 crores, Railway line to Container and Multi cargo terminal worth Rs. 60 crore, and RFID system worth Rs.11.82 crore. Shri Gadkari said the work being done under Sagarmala is estimated to create about 2 lakh direct jobs in the state in the next two years.

The twelve major ports under the Ministry of Shipping, India handled a record 647.43 MT of traffic in 2016-17, registering an annual growth rate of 6.79 percent, as against 4.32 percent last year. With this, these ports have out- performed private ports for the second consecutive year. The private ports have registered a traffic growth rate of 4 percent this year. The top position in cargo handling was retained by Kandla Port that handled 105.44 Million Tonnes of cargo, registering a growth of 5.39% over last year. France-based Haropa port expects maritime trade with India to grow at double digit this calendar year after having reported 7% growth in 2016, said Herve Martel, , CEO - Port of Le Havre & President- HAROPA ports. “We have received encouraging response from the Indian policy makers as also from port, shipping lines & Indian trade during our four day visit to India and we hope to build upon this momentum with increasing French investments taking place in India,” Martel said at the concluding leg of the multi city road show that took place in Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad and finally in Mumbai. There are over 1,000 French subsidiaries, including Sanofi, Arkema, Dassault, Alstom, Total etc, in India.

Days after the unexpected cargo ships collision outside the Kamarajar Port in Chennai (Tamil Nadu State, India), the Directorate General (DG) of Shipping has instituted an inquiry regarding the same. Two vessels namely, M.T. BW Maple carrying LPG and M.T. Dawn Kanchipuram carrying Petrol and lube oil, collided while crossing each other at 03.45AM on January 28 outside the Kamrajar harbour. The Shipping Minister Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan in Chennai today to take stock of Clean Up Operations, says a statement from the Press Information Bureau, Government of India. The Oil Tanker, Dawn Kanchipuram, which was carrying 32813 Tonnes of POL, suffered a rupture which led to engine oil spill (and not the POL being carried as cargo). There was no casualty or injury to the crew members.

While increasing the capacity of major ports, Ministry of Shipping has been striving to improve the operational efficiencies through mechanization and other measures. As a result key efficiency parameters have improved considerably. The Average Turnaround Time has registered a significant improvement in 2015-16 and was 3.63 days as against 4.00 days in the corresponding preceding year. This has further improved to 3.49 days in the current year (up to October, 2016). The Average Output Per Ship Berthday has increased from 12458 Tonnes in 2014-15 to 13151 Tonnes in 2015-16. This has further increased to 13949 Tonnes during the current year (up to October, 2016).

All Major Ports have been directed to implement the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to track the movement of men, materials and vehicles within the port premises on real time basis. Implementation of RFID system will eliminate manual checking of documents at port gate and real time tracking of movement of vehicles, men and materials. This would reduce congestion and also cost of operations at Ports. Ports have been directed to have the RFID system in place by 31.03.2017. At Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Kolkata Port Trust,  for RFID based Vehicle Tracking and Management System work order placed on 9.5.2016. Software developed and other activities are in process. The entire project will be implemented by 31.12.2016.

Among five major ports on the east coast Paradip Port topped the list with 28.65 million tonnes of cargo for the first four months, followed by Chennai Port 17.42 million tonnes, V.O.C Port 13.07 million tonnes, Krishnapatnam Port 11.57 million tonnes and Kamarajar Port close to 9 million tonnes. The five ports have collectively handled about 80 million tonnes of cargo during the first four months of the current fiscal year, fuelled by imports of coal and petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products. Paradip Port handled a record throughput of 8.06 MMT in a single month - July,2016 - surpassing the earlier highest record handling of 7.61 MMT cargo in the month of March, 2016.

The Indian Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its 'in-principle' approval for setting up a Major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be formed for development of this Port with initial equity investment from the three Major Ports in Tamil Nadu i.e. V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust, Chennai Port Trust, and Kamarajar Port Limited. The SPV will develop the port infrastructure including dredging and reclamation, construction of breakwater, ensuring connectivity links etc. At present, there are only a few ports in India that have sufficient draft and can match global cargo handling efficiencies. Currently, all of India's trans-shipment traffic gets handled in Colombo, Singapore and other international ports.

India's Adani Group is likely to take over the operational and management control of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Kattupalli International Container Terminal near Chennai, reports Business Standard. Adani is in the final stage of getting into an arrangement with L&T to take over the terminal, which the Mumbai-based construction and engineering major built at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore ($645 million). It is learnt that the AP Moller–Maersk Group, a Danish business conglomerate, is also in the race to acquire the container terminal operations of the Katupalli port. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd is evaluating the option of taking over the operation and maintenance of other ports too. Also on its radar are ports in Gangavaram, Andhra Pradesh, and Karaikal, Puducherry.

Throughput at Ennore-based Kamarajar Port Ltd increased 10.6 per cent in 2014-15 to 30.25 million tonne as against 27.34 mt registered during the previous year. The port has posted a 5 percent growth in pre-tax profit to Rs 421.47 ($70 million). Operating income was up 12.3 per cent to Rs 563.64 crore for the period as compared with Rs 501.93 crore. The major share of the throughput was imports of coal by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). The port located at Ennore to the north of Chennai now primarily handles coal import and car export. "We have posted over 12 per cent increase in operating income and over 5 per cent in profit. We were not expecting a major jump, since there were no more new terminals coming into operation.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM)  signed an MoU with Kamarajar Port Ltd. (KPL) in order to help facilitate the expansion of its export business. The MoU is a win-win for both as TKM will build a long-time relationship with the port, boosting its business and improving its commercial viability in a highly competitive market, and in return, TKM will benefit from the port related tariff concessions, giving a boost to its CBU for export to global markets. TKM has entered into a 10 year agreement with the port, renewable at every 5 year. The agreement was signed by the company officials in the presence of Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari and Minister of State for Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan in New Delhi. Also present in the MOU signing ceremony was Mr.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the country’s largest refiner and fuel retailer, is all set to invest around Rs 45,000 crore ($7.5 billion) over three years to build petrochemicals plants and LNG terminal. IOC is the largest enterprise in the country and the foremost ranked Fortune Global 500 Company in India and has presence in the complete hydrocarbon value chain from downstream refining & marketing, pipeline transportation, Petrochemicals, E&P and Gas Marketing. IOC's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and also the first one on the east coast at Kamarajar Port will become operational by the third quarter of 2017 or early 2018.
