APAC Marine Coatings Market to Hit $12Bln in 2024

Kawasaki May Quit Shipbuilding

Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries said it would consider a drastic revision of its shipbuilding, and has even indicated that it may pull out of its shipbuilding business due to its worsening profitability, reports Reuters. Kawasaki Shipbuilding revised its profit outlook lower for the business year ending next March, citing a stronger yen against the dollar and a decline in operating profitability from the shipbuilding business. The company said it would consider what to do with the shipbuilding business including whether to continue the business and aimed to reach a final decision by the end of March. Global shipbuilding companies have been suffering from a slide in new vessel orders amid a volatile global economy.

K-Line Welcomes 'Galaxy River'

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Tokyo, (hereafter called "K" Line) announced delivery of "GALAXY RIVER", an 82,200 cbm-type LPG Carrier at Sakaide Shipyard of Kawasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Japan on June 27, 2014. GALAXY RIVER will be operated by "K" Line under a Consecutive Voyage Charter Contract with Japan Gas Energy Corporation. The main cargo that will be transported is LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) from the Middle East to be discharged in Japan and other Far East ports. In addition, due to the recent Shale Revolution, there has been a lot of LPG exported from the United States and this is expected to increase. In this connection, GALAXY RIVER is fitted with the latest design that will enable her to pass through the Panama Canal after its expected expansion is completed.

Latest Global Deep-Sea Shipbuilding Contract Round-Up

Far East shipbuilders scoop the pool of latest big ship newbuilding orders reports Clarkson Hellas in their latest Weekly  S+P Bulletin. This week Clarkson Hellas say that Bocimar has announced an order for two firm 206,000 DWT Newcastlemax and one firm 180,000 DWT Capesize at Imabari, with delivery of all three vessels in 2016. Also at Imabari, Wisdom Marine announced an order for two firm 81,000 DWT Kamsarmax. Pricing is understood to be in the region USD 33-Millionper vessel with delivery in 2016.

Shipowners Think Big in Latest Newbuilding Orders

Ship owners trend towards larger ship sizes in the latest round of newbuilding orders reported in Clarkson Hellas S&P Weekly Bulletin. Oldendorff Carriers has contracted for four firm plus up to four option 208,000 dwt Newcastlemax from Taizhou CATIC. The first two vessels are due for delivery in 2015 with the remaining firm vessels and options lined up for delivery in 2016. Also in China, SWS are understood to have taken an order for four firm 208,000 dwt Kamsarmax from Clients of Cardiff Marine. Similarly delivery of the firm vessels is split between 2015 and 2016.

Japanese Shipbuilders Sign Aveva Contracts

Aveva (LSE:AVV), supplier of engineering IT systems for the plant and marine industries, announced that several Japanese shipbuilders -- Namura Shipbuilding, Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering and Imabari Shipbuilding Group -- have signed contracts worth over $2.5m to extend their use of Aveva marine solutions. The contracts were made in the first half of Aveva’s financial year ending 30 September 2008. Aveva marine solutions were first used in Japan by Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in 1994. Kawasaki has since expanded the use of Aveva marine solutions to its commercial and naval yards. To date, there are more than twenty Japanese customers who actively subscribe to Aveva’s shipbuilding solutions.

LNG Carriers on the Upswing

This past March concluded an agreement between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Kawasaki Shipbuilding for construction of an LNG carrier with a capacity of 145,000 cu. m. With two of the carriers already delivered to Mitsui for use by both Oman and Algeria under co-ownership, this agreement marks the third informal order placed for this such vessel. In addition, both Kawasaki Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries received an order for one 145,000 cu. m. carrier with the decision left open to buy another LNG from the Oman government this past July. The first carrier, which will be built at Kawasaki Shipbuilding’s Sakaide Works is set for delivery in December 2005. An option for a second carrier is being carried out at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Japan's KHI to Spin Off Shipbuilding

The Kyodo news service has reported that Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan will spin off its shipbuilding division on Oct. 1 into a new wholly owned subsidiary. The new subsidiary will reportedly be known as Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corp., and will specialize in the manufacture of ships and related equipment, Kawasaki Heavy said in a release. The spinoff is designed to create an efficient corporate structure that will enable the shipbuilding arm to cope with the global shipbuilding industry's oversupply and operate profitably in the long term by giving its managers greater leeway in running it, Kawasaki Heavy said. Tokyo Gas Orders World's Largest LNG Tanker

Tokyo Gas reportedly signed a contract with Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corp. for the world's LNG ship. The ship, the eighth LNG tanker of Toko LNG Tanker Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, will be equipped with four spherical tanks with a total capacity of 177,000 cu. m. Improved turbines will make it 15 pct more fuel-efficient than similar tankers, Tokyo Gas said. Tokyo Gas will jointly own the new vessel with Nippon Yusen K.K. with a stake of 10 pct to be held by itself and 90 percent by the major shipping company. Tokyo Gas will have exclusive rights to use the vessel for 20 years. Construction of the tanker will start in fiscal 2009. It will be completed in fiscal 2011.

Sonatrach, Kawasaki Sign Tanker Contract

Reuters has reported that a new joint venture of Algerian energy group Sonatrach and Japan's Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation signed a $120m deal to buy a tanker from a Chinese-Japanese firm, Sonatrach said. The 50-50 venture set up on Tuesday, called NOVL, signed the purchase agreement with NACKS Shipyard, a joint venture between Chinese company COSCO and Kawasaki , Sonatrach said in a statement on its Web site. Construction of the very large crude carrier (VLCC), with a capacity of 315,000 cubic metres, will begin in China from next February for delivery in December 2007, the statement said. Banks will finance 80 percent of the purchase value, while Sonatrach and Kawasaki are set to ensure the remaining 20 percent, it added. Source: Reuters
