Navy Accepts Delivery of USS Zumwalt

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of its first Zumwalt-class destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) on April 24 following Combat Systems Activation.The ship will transition to the next phase of developmental and integrated at-sea testing. This event marks a major milestone of the dual delivery approach for USS Zumwalt, which achieved Hull Mechanical & Electrical delivery from shipbuilder General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works in May 2016. The U.S. Navy's newest next generation destroyer completed acceptance trials on February 1, marking a significant milestone for second Zumwalt-class stealth warship ahead of expected delivery in the coming months. Smith Taken on Rolls-Royce Holdings Board

Rolls-Royce Holdings plc today announces the appointment of Sir Kevin Smith CBE as a Non-Executive Director. Sir Kevin will join the Board with effect from 1 November 2015 and will become a member of the Nominations and Governance Committee, the Remuneration Committee and the Science & Technology Committee. Sir Kevin joins from Unitas Capital, a leading Asian private equity firm, where he has been a full-time partner based in Hong Kong since joining the firm in February 2012. He has used his extensive industrial leadership experience to work closely with Unitas' portfolio companies, including being a director of technology company Edwards Group Limited (previously NASDAQ listed) from March 2012 until its sale to Atlas Copco in August 2013.

BMT WBM Scientist Udy wins Kevin Smith Prize

BMT WBM’s Brisbane-based Graduate Scientist, Danielle Udy, was recently awarded the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland 2014 Kevin Smith Prize for her honours research. The Royal Geographical Society of Queensland presents medals to the highest achieving student majoring in geographical science at three major Queensland universities – James Cook University, The University of Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast.  Danielle’s research identified atmospheric circulation patterns that were linked to recent flood events within the Brisbane River Basin to enhance flood forecasting potential.  She will be presenting this research at the upcoming annual Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society conference in July.

Schlumberger to Take $1 bln Restructuring Charge in Fourth Quarter

Schlumberger Ltd, the world's No.1 oilfield services provider, said it would take a $1 billion charge related to jobs cuts and the writedown of some seismic vessels as it trims its operations in response to slumping oil prices. The company expects a pretax charge of $200 million in the fourth quarter ending December related to the job cuts, it said at Cowen and Company's energy conference on Tuesday. Schlumberger on Tuesday had also said the quarter's results would also include a $800 million charge to write down the value of six vessels and other WesternGeco assets. The company did not say how many or in which of its businesses it would cut jobs.

Floating Solar Field Concept Unveiled by DNV

DNV has developed SUNdy, a large-scale offshore solar field concept that aims to help countries seeking alternative energy sources. The core feature of the concept is a hexagonal array which floats on the sea surface. A collection of these arrays, totaling 4,200 solar panels, forms a solar island the size of a large football stadium, capable of generating 2 MW of power. Multiple islands connected together make up a solar field of 50 MW or more, producing enough electricity for 30,000 people.

DNV accredited for wind turbine certification in Korea

As the first international certification body DNV has received accreditation in Korea to deliver type and project certification of wind turbines and wind farms. Due to the accreditation from the Dutch Accreditation Council, DNV now has official approval to handle all aspects of the certification work using its local wind experts. This provides a number of advantages to Korean and Asian manufacturers. DNV’s team in Korea is accreted to handle type and project certification in accordance with IEC 61400-22 and DNV-OS-J101 standards. This new certification practice will result in a convenient and more cost-effective process for Korean and Asian manufacturers to achieve certification for their wind turbine and wind farm projects.

W&O Supply announces one new hire and two promotions to support the company’s growth. To provide management and leadership for the company’s mission critical services, W&O Supply has created a new department dubbed Shared Services. W&O Supply’s Shared Services department combines materials management, information technology, warehousing and logistics, enabling the company to improve communication and workflow between these services for its 13 locations across the U.S. John Kilbride has been promoted to Vice President of Shared Services and is responsible for the seamless integration and management of these services which are shared by all W&O Supply branches. Carl Herman has been promoted to Director of Materials Management and SPACE Valve Products.
