Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes”) (NASDAQ:GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States and a major provider of environmental and infrastructure services, announced today the signing of two subcontracts valued at approximately $55 million for work in the Middle East as well as the receipt of a $38 million award for a coastal protection project in North Carolina. The first subcontract in the Middle East is for a land development project and involves dredging over 7 million cubic meters of material by creating several water circulation channels and pumping the resulting material up to 7,000 meters to its designated reclamation area.

The Boaterz ‘n Bikerz Hull of a Tour² launch of “The Freedom Ride” throttled forward yesterday from Freedom Boat Club’s Marina Jack location in downtown Sarasota, FL. The nine-day, 2000-mile motorcycle and boating tour attracted 30 members of the boating industry including their friends, and travels up the east coast to Washington D.C., concluding with participation in the 100,000-bike rally, Rolling Thunder, which honors war veterans, POWs and MIA on Memorial Day weekend. “This ride is a celebration of freedom and the great outdoors,” said tour organizer and marine industry marketing veteran Wanda Kenton Smith. “Our tour is unique in that we combine the best of the open roads with the open seas in an adventure that promotes both motorcycling and boating activity.

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured 62-year-old man from his sailboat Thursday approximately 100 miles east of Kill Devil Hills. Watchstanders at the Fifth Coast Guard District command center in Portsmouth, Virginia, received notification at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center, reporting they received a distress message from the sailboat Austina. The report stated the boat operator fell, injured his hip and was in need of medical assistance. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the crew of the MCT Matterhorn to assist. The MCT Matterhorn is registered with the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System.

1897-The Overland Expedition, consisting of three officers from the Revenue Cutter Service, departed from the cutter Bear off Nunivak Island to rescue 300 whalers trapped in the ice at Point Barrow, Alaska. The rescuers were First Lieutenant D. H. Jarvis, Second Lieutenant E. P. Bertholf (later a commandant), and Surgeon S. J. Call. The rescuers had to travel over 1,000 miles overland to reach the whalers. 1903-Life-Saving Service personnel from Kill Devil Hills Life-Saving Station helped carry materials to the launch site for the first successful heavier-than-air aircraft flight by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and then assisted the brothers in their flights that day. The life-savers were John T. Daniels, W.S. Dough and A.D. Etheridge.
