The Reluctant Pirate - Book Review

John Guy’s newest effort, The Reluctant Pirate, is an entertaining tale of modern day pirates and a primer on what really happens when today’s merchant ships are boarded and held for ransom, and more importantly, why. And unlike the better known movie (Captain Phillips) that tackles a similar subject on the big screen, The Reluctant Pirate digs a bit deeper into the politics of today’s piracy business model, the players involved (and their motivations) and reaches into the psyche of the Somali pirate himself. At about 160 pages, The Reluctant Pirate is an easy read, but not because of its relatively short length. Fast moving and chock full of action, John Guy skillfully moves us back and forth between London, Norway, Somalia, Greece and out to sea on the waters in between.

IMB: Somali Pirate Clampdown Caused Piracy Decline

File Photo: captured pirates off of Somalia.

Piracy at sea has reached its lowest levels in six years, with 264 attacks recorded worldwide in 2013, a 40% drop since Somali piracy peaked in 2011, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said. Just 15 incidents were reported off Somalia in 2013, down from 75 in 2012, and 237 in 2011. IMB’s annual global piracy report shows more than 300 people were taken hostage at sea last year and 21 were injured, nearly all with guns or knives. A total of 12 vessels were hijacked, 202 were boarded, 22 were fired upon and a further 28 reported attempted attacks.

Life at Sea in Container Ships Extraordinay Says New Book

Cover of the book: Image courtesy of Amazon

Author Horatio Clare joined two container ships for voyages that led to the recent publication of his book 'Down To The Sea In Ships: Of Ageless Oceans and Modern Men', available from Amazon for Kindle, or as a hardback. For millennia, the seaways have carried our goods, cultures and ideas, the terrors of war and the bounties of peace - and they have never been busier than they are today. But though our normality depends on shipping, it is a world which passes largely unconsidered, unseen and unrecorded.

Book Review: After the Galaxy

After the Galaxy by John Sabella as told by Dave Shoemaker

“Yes, Mirek. Four men huddled on the bow of the burning, 190-foot fishing vessel Galaxy as the crippled boat foundered on one of the world’s cruelest oceans. Captain Dave Shoemaker was seriously hurt. After the backdraft explosion, he made several desperate attempts to enter the smoke-filled wheelhouse, find a radio and issue a mayday call. Each foray left him puking and gasping, smoke searing his lungs and contact with the steel bulkheads charring his flesh and igniting his clothing. After each attempt, he climbed through an escape hatch onto the roof of the wheelhouse, gasping for air.
