Total Joins Maersk-led Shipping Decarbonization Project

French oil major Total said it will contribute to a project led by shipping giant Maersk aiming to develop new alternative fuels and carbon neutral solutions for ships.The nonprofit Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping was formed in 2020 as the maritime industry continues efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. The center will create overviews of decarbonization pathways, accelerate the development of selected decarbonizing fuels and powering technologies, and support the establishment of regulatory, financial and commercial means to enable transformation.

Maersk's New CEO Appointment Raises Prospect of Break-up

Danish shipping and oil group A. P. Moller-Maersk could split up into separate companies, its chairman said on Thursday after naming Soren Skou, the head of its container business, as chief executive. Maersk shares rose more than 10 percent on the news with investors betting on a break-up and seeing the appointment as a sign of a more profound restructuring. "The question is whether we should be a large group, or whether we should be a number of independent companies," Chairman Michael Pram Rasmussen told Danish online media Finans.

Maersk McKinney Moller Sets Container Loading Record

18,612 TEUs is the new world record for container loading, and was won by Maersk Line's Triple E Class vessel, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, first in the series of behemoths Danish company, which sailed early in the week from the port of Algeciras, Spain with this huge cargo. The ship is now en route to Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. APM Terminals explains in a note, the ship arrived at 2.00 hours on Monday to Algeciras from APM Terminas Tangier with 15,844 TEUs. In the Algeciras port loaded additional 2,180 TEUs, reaching a new world record. It breaks the previous record set by Mary Maersk that also sailed from Algeciras with 17,603 TEU. Baltic Exchange Honors Eyal Ofer with Life Membership

London's Baltic Exchange informs that the achievements of Eyal Ofer, the principal of ship management company Zodiac Group, have been celebrated with the award of honorary life membership of the Exchange. The prestigious award was last awarded in 2009 to the late Sammy Ofer, KBE, father of Mr Eyal Ofer. Other recipients of Baltic Exchange honorary membership have included the Duke of Edinburgh, Winston Churchill, and Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. Maersk Line’s first 18,000 teu vessel, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, which was doing the rounds on her maiden voyage in Northern Europe last week, has prompted much speculation on her economies of scale, particularly as HHI has just confirmed that it is negotiating an order for five slightly larger ships with UASC, says Drewry Maritime Research in a new paper. Thanks to its unique depth, the largest vessels in the world will be moored in the port of Rotterdam this week. On Friday , August 16, all attention will focus on the first visit of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. With a capacity of 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot containers), a length of 399 meters and a width of 59 metres, this vessel is by far the largest container ship in the world. At that moment, a few other massive ships will be present in the port. The Ti Europe will be moored at Dolphins 80 in the Calandkanaal.

Herculean Ships Gather in Port of Rotterdam

The largest vessels in the world will be moored in the port of Rotterdam in the next 7 days, thanks to the port's deep-draft facilities. On Friday 16 August, all attention will focus on the first visit of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. With a capacity of 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot containers), a length of 399 metres and a width of 59 metres, this vessel is by far the largest container ship in the world. The Ti Europe will be moored at Dolphins 80 in the Calandkanaal. With a length of 380 metres and width of 69 metres, this white tanker is the largest oil tanker in the world still in operation (420,000 dwt). In addition, the Vale Rio is expected at EMO in the Mississippihaven. This ship, the largest iron ore vessel in the world, measures 362 metres by 65 metres.

Maritime Exhibit at National Museum

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History opened "On the Water: Stories from Maritime America," a new, permanent exhibition designed to engage the public in an exploration of America's maritime heritage. The 8,500 sq ft exhibition builds on the Smithsonian's National Watercraft Collection of rigged ship models, patent models, documents and images to bring the sights, sounds and stories from the oceans, inland rivers and coastal communities to the museum's millions of visitors.
