KMSS Bridgeline Takes a Lead

Korean shipbuilders have achieved a market-leading role in the construction of LNG tankers. Following commitment to serve this market with products, Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has received a breakthrough success by receiving firm orders for its Bridgeline, Integrated Navigation System, to be fitted to seven of the new LNG tankers, with options for further deliveries in the future. KMSS will provide Radar/ARPA, ECDIS- electronic chart display system, MBB- voyage data recorder, UAIS- universal automatic identification system with full integration of the navigation instruments. The Bridgeline assembly will be carried out in Korea.

Norway: Teekay Seeks to Grow Suezmax Fleet

Expanding the Suezmax fleet and greater involvement in carrying oil products are among the ambitions being pursued by theTeekay Tanker Services (TTS) business unit of Teekay. "At the same time, we're working to expand our strong Aframax position," said TTS Vice President Peder Farmen, who heads the product transport sector of TTS from the group's Norwegian office in Stavanger. Teekay's conventional shipping operations in Norway have further diversified the company's fleet, the majority of which is comprised of Aframax vessels. Since Teekay's acquisitions of Bona Shipholding in 1999, Ugland Nordic Shipping in 2001 and Navion in 2002, Teekay has established itself as a leading tanker operator in the North Sea and Atlantic, in addition to the Pacific.

Sea Goddess Fire Detection Upgraded

M/V’s luxury cruise ships ‘Sea Goddess I and II’. KMSS will be supplying its Autronica fire detection system to these identical sister ships. The order follows the recent demand from the National Safety Transport Board in USA for an integrated Local Buzzer in each cabin smoke detector. KMSS is the only company capable of delivering the ‘smart buzzer’ mounted inside the detector. This buzzer does not require any extra cabling as it is powered from the detector loop. after 30 seconds, allowing the passenger to hear the Ship’s PA system after the local alarm. The upgrade consists of approximately 400 detectors and other field devices per ship, with delivery expected early 2002. replace a system from Thorn Security that was installed in 1994.

RTM STAR Center Upgrades Full Mission Bridge Simulator

RTM STAR (Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research) Center has announced the upgrade and modernization of their 247 degree “field-of-view” Full Mission Bridge Simulator. The simulator is located at STAR Center’s Dania Beach, Fla., facility and is based on a design by Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems Inc. (KMSS). Following the successful upgrade of STAR Center’s 360 bridge with the Litton Sperry 2100 Integrated Bridge System in 1999, STAR Center is proud to announce the upgrade of its other Full Mission Bridge Simulator. The 247° Full Mission Bridge Simulator has been upgraded with KMSS equipment and features the capability to simulate Azipod® equipped vessels in addition to other traditional propulsion systems.

KMSS Wins Contract

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has won the contract to supply its integrated monitoring and control system to two Suezmax tankers currently under construction at Split Shipyard, Croatia. The tankers are owned by Tankerska Plovidba d.d., of Zadar in Croatia. The delivery will include the KMSS AutroCargo GL-100 radar based cargo level gauging system. The GL-100 level gauge consists of the GLA100 Level Sensing Unit located on the tank connected to a GLK-100 Signal Processing Unit normally located in the Cargo Control Room. Dedicated signal processing ensures normal system operation on the rest of the system if a malfunction occurs on one of the units. Ballast and Service tank level gauging will be monitored by the KMSS GT302/303 pressure transmitters.

KMSS Wins Contract

Ballast and service level gauging will be monitored by the KMSS GT302/303 pressure transmitters. The monitoring and control system will be managed from the KMSS DataChief C20 machinery automation system. The delivery also includes two Local Operator Stations (LOS) connected directly to the controller area network.

KMSS Cargo Handling Gets Contract

KMSS has won the contract to supply eight workstation based cargo handling simulators to Maine Maritime Academy. The system will be delivered in spring 2002 and will consist of both the VLCC and Product Carrier CargoHandling Models. The instructor station, as well as the eight student workstations will have dual, flat screen monitors installed. This dual monitor arrangement allows for the instructor or student to see more than one process diagram at a time. The workstation based system uses the same instructor station and processes the same model library as the fully operational system. Each model is based on data from real ships creating the most realistic scenarios available.

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has received type approval for its advanced VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) the ‘Maritime Black Box’ (MBB). The first orders have already been taken for Viking Lines passenger vessels, who have been eagerly awaiting type approval of the superior VDR from KMSS. Borje Jansson, Viking Lines commented ‘the MBB from KMSS was well worth the wait, I knew that they would develop the best solution. The Replay and Evaluation Unit, which is used to replay events, can also be used as an excellent tool for training purposes, such as entry to port. Other functions that can be included in the MBB include the recording of data for reports and training, such as voyage reports, engine logs, analysis of parameters.

KMSS Awarded Contract

The Portuguese Navy has awarded a major ship handling simulator contract to KMSS. The contract consists of several naval bridge cubicles located on two different locations connected by a fibre optic network. The main shiphandling bridge will be installed at the Navy's tactical centre and will replicate the bridge of the "Vasco da Gama", a MEKO-class frigate. Each of the two naval training sites will be equipped with different configured bridges providing the capacity to train several bridge crews operating in the same exercise scenario, simultaneously. In addition to the bridge facilities, a simulated OPS room will be installed at the tactical centre to provide tactical information to each scenario.

KMSS Breaks Through Simulation in Russia

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has been awarded a contract to supply a Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator to the Novorossiysk Shipping Company's Russian facilities. The new simulator, which will utilize the most innovative KMSS simulator software packages, will include a user friendly KMSS Instructor Control, Monitoring and Debriefing facilities as well as a main visual bridge, a secondary bridge trio, software development station and a four-station PC Desktop Cargo Handling Simulator. To enhance the bridge's real-time simulation, the main bridge will have an effective KMSS style layout, while emphasizing the use of real hardware panels instead of screen based software controls.

KMSS To Upgrade System on M/V Marco Polo

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has been awarded the contract to upgrade the fire detection system on the M/V Marco Polo. Star Cruises. The contract includes 1500 Detectors, 800 ‘smart buzzers’ and the Autromaster 5000 Color Graphic Workstation. a color graphic indication, monitoring and control system that has been approved by the maritime authorities and classification societies, and will replace the traditional LED panel system. KMSS Gets Orders

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has recently won a number of orders for its cargo monitoring systems in Japan and Korea. These new orders are collectively worth over $1 million and firmly establish KMSS as a major player in these lucrative markets. The first order is for a Custody Transfer System (CTS) for MOL and Qatar Gas Hull 1561 currently under construction at Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan. The second order is also for a CTS cargo system for Shell Hull 2183 currently under construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., in Nagasaki, Japan. The ship is the last to be built in a series of three, which have also been fitted with equipment from KMSS. currently under construction at Daewoo in Korea.

KMSS Report Cargo Systems Success

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) reported excellent progress in the cargo monitoring systems market at the Posidonia Exhibition 2002 in Piraeus, Greece. This news was reinforced by the announcement of a co-operation agreement with Gunclean Toftejorg that will offer system integration to common customers. Gunclean Toftejorg has developed a dedicated range of tank cleaning equipment. Cleaning of cargo tanks on crude oil, chemical and product tankers as well as bulk carriers is essential for the optimised use of the transportation capacity of a tanker. This latest collaboration strengthens KMSS’s ability to offer total solutions to their customers.

Cruises Limited (RCCL), out of the Meyer Weft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The contract is worth $3.2 million in total. to leave the yard imminently. launched next year and in 2004. Each ship will be fitted with 4500 detectors and 1000 Control & Indication interface units for doors, fire dampers, low location lights, sprinkler valves and other systems. In addition, three Autromaster 5000 Color Graphic Indication and Control System units will be installed to control each ship's Fire Detection System. and smoke concentration to high voltage lines. all cruise ships should install local buzzers in all cabins. after 90 seconds, allowing the public address system to be heard. need for extra cabling, which drastically reduces the cost of installing this important safety measure.

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has secured the contract to supply an Inland Waterway Simulator to the NOVA College – Shipping, Transport and Logistics Unit based in Ijmuiden, Netherlands. KMSS and NOVA College enjoy a strong business relationship, which has been strengthened further by this repeat order. KMSS has previously delivered two Polaris systems and an engine room simulator to the college and the flexible product and the customer support program that KMSS offers will keep the NOVA College simulation facility updated throughout it’s entire life-span. KMSS Wins Contract for Fire Detection Systems

to supply Fire Detection Systems to four Radiance Class ships run by Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (RCCL), out of the Meyer Weft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The four ship deal will see KMSS installing its Autrosafe Fire Detection System with Self Verifying Detectors on the currently sailing ‘M/S Radiance of the Seas’ and the M/S Brilliance of the Seas, which is due to leave the yard imminently. Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has received an order worth $1.2 million from the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard located in Ulsan, South Korea. KMSS will supply its powerful Integrated Bridge System – BridgeLine - for fitting on four 2826 TEU Container Ships owned by Suisse Atlantique and Ahrenkiel. The complete Integrated Bridge System (IBS) installed in KMSS BridgeLine Consoles provides Radar/ARPA with the latest generation antennas and receivers, Steering Control System, Track Pilot, Speedlog, Echosounder, ECDIS, DGPS and GMDSS. KMSS Holds Users’ Conference

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) held its 15th Annual Simulation Users’ Conference (UC-2002) in Tonsberg, Norway on June 16-21. UC-2002 was held in conjunction with the Vestfold University College and over 100 participants attended the five-day conference, of which 75 percent were KMSS customer delegates. The implementation of e-Learning in maritime education was the main focus of UC-2002 and participants were presented with an overflowing itinerary consisting of presentations, papers, workshops and social events, all of which proved a resounding success. As part of the conference KMSS presented an e-education workshop. This involved the demonstration of a suite of advanced training and e-learning tools that are set to transform the processes involved in maritime training.

KMSS Awarded Kalmar Contract

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has been awarded the contract to upgrade and relocate simulator facilities for the Kalmar Maritime Academy in Sweden. The academy, the largest of its kind in Sweden will relocate to a coastal location at the end of 2002, when KMSS will deliver the order. KMSS has already delivered and installed 5 Databridge 10 and 5 SeaMap 10 units in the training vessel ‘MS Calmare Nyckel’, owned by the Kalmar Maritime Academy. The latest order is for a Navigation Simulator Upgrade, Cargo handling simulator and a GMDSS training unit. The extensive simulator upgrade package consists of the latest navigation equipment from KMSS including the Databridge 10 radar/ARPA and the Seamap 10 ECDIS.

KMSS Seals Brazilian Contracts

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has taken orders to provide over $3 million worth of services and equipment to Petrobras and Metalnave SA, both based in Brazil. KMSS products are also set to be displayed at this years World Petroleum Expo, to be held in Rio this September. KMSS will supply Autrocargo cargo monitoring systems for the Petrobras P-43 and P-48 Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessels (FPSO’s), currently under construction in Singapore and Brazil and bound for the Barracuda and Caratinga field developments. Petrobras has 11 FPSO’s in operation and under construction, 8 of which have been fitted out with KMSS systems.
