Incat Crowther Designs Korean Ferry

Incat Crowther has announced a contract to design a 65m catamaran passenger ferry for operation in Korea. The Incat Crowther 65 will be built by Khan Co., Ltd of Geoje-si, Korea and operated by Dolphin Shipping Co., Ltd.The vessel will provide a vital link between Pohang, on mainland Korea and the island of Ulleung-do, where it will be the second largest vessel on the route. HMM, FESCO Expand Cooperation

South Korean major Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) unveiled its plans to expand cooperation with Russian container line FESCO on their China Russia North Service (CRN).HMM has been jointly operating a China-Korea-Russia weekly service, under the name of ‘CRN’ with FESCO and CMA CGM.With the expansion of cooperation, the current CRN will be reorganized and two of new direct services connecting Korea and Russia, named 'KR2 (Korea Russia Service 2)' and 'KRS (Korea Russia Service)', will be introduced in the service network of HMM.HMM deploys one vessel (1,000 TEU) on the KR2 which directly connects Busan and Vostochny, while FESCO places one vessel (1,200 TEU) on the KRS, the direct service between Busan and Vladivostok.The commencement date of respective service is on May 11 for KR2 and on Ma

KRS Class Approval for Drone Inspection of Confined Spaces

Paris MoU Publishes New Performance List

At its 49th meeting last month, the Paris MoU Committee approved the 2015 inspection results and adopted new performance lists for flags and Recognized Organizations. These lists will take effect from July 1, 2016. The White, Grey and Black (WGB) List presents the full spectrum, from quality flags to flags with a poor performance that are considered high or very high risk. It is based on the total number of inspections and detentions over a three-year rolling period for flags with at least 30 inspections in the period. On the White, Grey and Black list for 2015, a total number of 73 flags are listed: 43 on the White List, 19 on the Grey List and 11 on the Black list.

HMM, FESCO and CMA CGM Launch Joint CRS Loop

Prior to the launch, HMM has been jointly operating two services ‘KRS (Korea Russia Service)’ and ‘KR2 (Korea Russia Service 2)’ with FESCO. HMM merged the two joint loops and broaden its service coverage to the South China and the Middle China, and changed the service name to CRS, which was also joined by a French carrier CMA CGM. The new weekly service turns in three weeks with three ships of 2,700-4,600 teus those were provided by each company. The service calls at Hong Kong, Chiwan, Xiamen, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Vladivostok (Commercial Port), Vostochny, Busan, Hong Kong. While cooperating with FESCO and CMA CGM for CRS, HMM has also been joining hands with FESCO for ‘CRN (China Russia North Service),’ which connects China and Russia with two 1,700 teu container ships.

Green-ship Certification Center Opens in Korea

Announced in 2012 as the world’s first green-ship equipment certification center, The Korean Register – an IACS member class society, and founding partner in the project –announced that the center has opened for business earlier this month in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea. Costing a total of $29.4 million (30 billion won), the new center will test, evaluate and certify green-ship equipment. New Hull Structure Analysis Software

The Korean Register (KR) released SeaTrust-HullScan, a software solution to analyze and appraise a vessel’s hull structure in accordance with the new harmonized common structural rules (CSR-H). SeaTrust–HullScan is a new ship design support program that enables ship designers and ship builders to accurately apply IACS CSR-H and all subsequent amendments when designing and constructing a vessel. SeaTrust–HullScan was developed in-house and has been rigorously verified with the major Korean shipyards.

KR Donates Software to World Maritime University

The Korean Register (KR), an IACS member classification society, announced that it has again donated its award winning KR-CON software to students at the World Maritime University (WMU). KR-CON is an international database program which contains the full up-to-date texts of all IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars in a single USB memory stick. It enables users to identify regulations relevant to a specific task and helps ensure all IMO requirements are applied correctly. KR-CON is currently being used by surveyors, port state control inspectors, shipping companies, shipyards and design houses in more than 30 countries across the world. It is available in USB format and from the KR website where all new regulations are immediately updated.

UK-Detained Ships: October 2013

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that nine foreign flagged ships were under detention in U.K. ports during October 2013 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. Latest monthly figures show that there were six new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in U.K. ports and three vessels remained under detention from previous months. Only six vessels remain under detention at the end of this month.

GE Marine Sell 3 Marine Diesel Engines at Korea Expo

At the presently running Kormarine International Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Exhibition in Busan, South Korea, GE Marine say they have sold three 16V250 marine diesel engines: 2 engines to Dongwon Industries, one of the world's largest tuna fishery companies; and one engine to Hansung Enterprises, a leading Korean seafood and fishery company. The GE Marine engines will power 80-meter-long tuna purse seiners. The engines are IMO (International Maritime Organization) Tier II and KRS (Korean Register of Shipping) certified and scheduled for commissioning in early 2014. Local support is provided by GE Marine’s regional distributor, YusinHR.

KR Directs Build of Green Equipment Certification Center

The Korean Register, an IACS member classification society, is leading a project to build and operate the world’s first green-ship equipment certification center in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea which is due to open in February 2014. Work is already underway and the new $269 million won facility is being constructed with the full support of the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the local government and various research institutes. The project has been created in response to IMO’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction and maritime pollution regulations and will enable KR to lead the way in certifying essential green-ship components, including engines.

Korean Register and Dongkuk Implement Technology Exchange

The Korean Register – an IACS member class society - signed an MoU with global steel producer Dongkuk Steel. The agreement paves the way for the two organizations to cooperate on the exchange of strategic technology relevant to the construction of seagoing vessels and platforms. Specifically, the agreement defines mutual cooperation for developing and surveying rolled steel used in the building of ships and marine structures.  It covers new domestic projects such as natural gas carriers, technical information sharing on technology trends, information sharing on future demand for steel including from international and domestic ship yards, joint studies into the approval and development of new steel types and KR’s third-party surveying of Dongkuk Steel’s products. www.krs.co.kr

Korean Register Elects a New Chairman and CEO

At a meeting of the general assembly in Seoul, the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) elected Dr. Chon Young-Kee as its new Chairman and CEO. The general assembly oversees the running of KR and comprises 86 voting members. Prior to election, Dr. Chon served as executive vice president of KR’s technical division and this is the first time in KR’s 53 year history that an internal appointment to Chairman and CEO has been made. Dr. Chon takes over from outgoing Chairman and CEO, Dr. Oh Kong-Gyun, who has served two three-year terms. Dr. Chon graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and later gained both master and doctorate degrees from Stevenson University in the United States. Korean Register Asked to Halt Iranian Ship Certifications

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) calls on the Korean Register of Shipping (KRS) to stop certifying Iranian shipping vessels, specifically those of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC). Reportedly, KRS is the one and only classification societies in the world that continues to provide Iranian vessels with safety certificates. The prominent European shipping services Bureau Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd recently stopped certifying Iranian vessels in response to UANI.
