Cargo Ship Lost Power Before Slamming Bridge in Baltimore

A massive cargo ship smashed into a bridge while sailing out of Baltimore early on Tuesday, sending cars and people into the river below and closing one of the busiest ports on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.Rescuers pulled out two survivors, one of whom was hospitalized, and searched for more in the Patapsco River after huge metal spans of the 1.6-mile (2.57 km) Francis Scott Key Bridge crumpled into the icy water around 1:30 a.m. (0530 GMT).The ship reported a power issue before impact

A container ship smashed into a four-lane bridge in the U.S. port of Baltimore in darkness on Tuesday, causing it to collapse and sending cars and people plunging into the river below.Rescuers pulled out two survivors, one in a "very serious condition," and were searching for more in the Patapsco River after huge spans of the 1.6-mile (2.57 km) Francis Scott Key Bridge crumpled into the water.The ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, and crew on board notified Maryland officials they had lost control of the vessel, ABC News reported, citing an unclassified U.S.

Peel Ports Secures WEC Lines Service for Liverpool

Dutch company WEC Lines is to begin weekly calls at the Port of Liverpool from February 10th, providing a new option for shippers looking to access central and northern UK markets. The brand new service will connect Liverpool with Lisbon, Setubal, Leixoes and Sines and vice versa, with other links to Ireland, Scotland, Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands. UK's Peel Ports to Expand Liverpool to Weather Container Slump

Peel Ports, one of Britain's largest port operators, expects to withstand the container shipping slump with a bold project aimed at attracting cargo to Liverpool away from southern gateways, its chief executive said. The container market, which ships retail goods from iPhones to designer clothes and food products, has been hit hard by a slowdown in demand for goods from Asia, especially China. The Baltic exchange's main sea freight index, which gauges the cost of shipping dry bulk commodities such as coal, has fallen to the lowest level since data is available on the China slowdown. Campaign to Cut Haulage Miles

Peel Ports announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May, Peel Ports called for importers and exporters whose goods began or ended their journey in the north of the UK to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years. In addition to achieving significant carbon reduction, the company also estimates that the move could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs by delivering to the heartland of the UK.

Jaguar Land Rover Awaits News of Cars Aboard Beached Ship

Jaguar Land Rover said on Tuesday it was awaiting word on the fate of 1,200 luxury vehicles aboard a 51,000-tonne car transporter ship that has run aground in the English Channel. Salvage experts are working around the clock to right the Hoegh Osaka, which has been stuck on a sandbank off the south coast of England since Saturday. Range Rovers and other Jaguar Land Rover models accounting for most of the 1,400 vehicles aboard are covered by insurance, said a spokesman for the British carmaker, owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd. "We're still evaluating what has happened," the spokesman said.

David Smith Appointed CFO of Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce announced today that David Smith has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer and a Director of Rolls-Royce Holdings plc. He takes up his new role with immediate effect, replacing Mark Morris who has decided to leave the company after 27 years, serving most recently as Chief Financial Officer since January 2012. David Smith joined Rolls-Royce earlier this year, and is currently Chief Financial Officer of the Aerospace Division. David spent the first 25 years of his career at Ford where he held a number of senior positions including Chief Financial Officer and subsequently Chief Executive Officer at Jaguar Land Rover, before he moved to the technology company, Edwards Group as Chief Financial Officer.

Concordia Baby, the latest vessel to be completed by specialist workboat builder Alnmaritec, is heading to the Falkland Islands to be installed onto the mother ship M/V Concordia Bay. Operated by Workboat Services Ltd., MV Concordia Bay provides service as a passenger and cargo ferry within the archipelago. A landing craft measuring 45.5m, she is able to lower her bow ramp on suitable beaches, however many of the islands are difficult to reach and therefore there is a requirement for a smaller craft

Warship in Place to Guard London Olympics

The warship will be berthed at Greenwich until after the Paralympics, and will act as a helicopter landing platform and logistics hub in support of maritime and air security operations. HMS Ocean will also accommodate 400 military personnel who will be part of the venue security force for nearby Greenwich Park. An amphibious assault ship, HMS Ocean is designed to deliver Royal Marines commandos to the centre of the action by helicopter or by landing craft - there are six helicopter operating spots on the flight deck, and the hangar can hold many more aircraft.

UK engineering chiefs gathered at the Department for Education on Wednesday 8 June to discuss what can be done to ensure the talent pipeline and adequately equip young people for the requirements of industry. To satisfy their requirement for 4 heavy duty multi-purpose workboats the Mauritius Police have opted for the RTK Marine 9m Ramped Logistic Support Boat. The workboats are a new commercial derivative of the 9m Combat Support Boat proven in service with the U.K. Ministry of Defense and feature a raised aft-wheelhouse with a ramped well deck. The planing, asymmetrical catamaran hull form is manufactured from GRP and features a high degree of reserve buoyancy to enable the craft to remain afloat when fully swamped. The self-draining well deck features a manually operated bow ramp and is capable of carrying a short wheelbase Land Rover, general cargo or personnel with the modular straddle seating in place.
