My first visit in 2007 to the American Society of Naval Engineers’ (ASNE) Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC) was an eye-opener. Having built a naval architecture career with frigates, destroyers and other large naval and commercial ships, I was eager to learn of the smaller craft used by the U.S. Navy and other government and military bodies. As my flight into Norfolk, Va. descended over Chesapeake Bay, I gazed in amazement as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) raced toward Virginia Beach, slowed, glided up the beach and into its shore base.

Ørsted-Eversource JV Taps Nexans for Revolution Offshore Wind Farm Export Cable

Paris-based offshore cable making and installation company Nexans has won a contract with Ørsted and Eversource to install and protect the export cable link for the Revolution offshore wind farm in the U.S.The project will connect the wind farm to the onshore grid and help Connecticut and Rhode Island states achieve ongoing commitments to develop offshore wind.Located more than 15 miles south of the Rhode Island coast and 32 miles southeast of the Connecticut coast, the 704 MW Revolution Wind Farm will address both states’ energy needs…

Shipbuilding: Nexans Names New Flagship Cable Layer CLV Nexans Aurora

Nexans named its new flagship CLV Nexans Aurora. Built at Ulstein Verft in Norway and designed by Skipsteknisk, the ship is designed to operate near shore in shallow waters as well as deepsea cable operations with cable laying equipment delivered from Maats Tech.“The delivery of the CLV Nexans Aurora is an important step to fulfill our purpose “Electrify the Future”; creating a safer, more sustainable, renewable and inclusive global energy system," said Ragnhild Katteland, EEVP, Subsea & Land Systems Business Group, Nexans.

Nexans to Supply Cables for Marjan Field

The global player in the cable and optical fiber industry Nexans S.A. was awarded a significant Purchase Order to supply 180 km of 230 kV cables for the offshore Marjan increment development mega-project on the eastern coast of the Arabian Gulf.Discovered in 1967, the Marjan field is one of the oldest and biggest offshore oil and gas fields in the Arabian Gulf. Nexans, Eversource, Ørsted Ink US OWF Deal

French cables manufacturer Nexans has signed a framework agreement with Denmark’s global offshore wind giant Ørsted A/S and New England utility Eversource Energy to take part in the offshore wind farm development in North America.According to the provider of cabling and connectivity solutions, the agreement will reinforce their long-term partnership and will result in Nexans having the opportunity to provide up to 1,000 km of subsea high voltage export cables for Ørsted’s offshore wind farms in North America.The first delivery is expected by 2022 and the agreement extends until 2027, it said.“Our partnership with Ørsted and Eversource will accelerate the energy transition in North America and bring Nexans’ industry-leading subsea cable technology to the U.S.…

ABB Develops Autonomous Vessels in Singapore

Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation ABB has won a contract from ST Engineering Land Systems Ltd. to deliver and commission integrated smart charging points for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in the new Tuas port of Singapore.Deliveries of the vehicles, which will be deployed to transport heavy shipping containers at the port terminal, are scheduled to begin from September 2020 through to August 2022, with the ABB chargers and supporting infrastructure set to be installed towards the end of 2020. Financial details were not disclosed.The contract includes 450kW High Power Chargers, design and supply of charge point prefabricated skid and container solutions with integrated chargers, medium- and low- voltage switchgear, transformers and associated control and monitoring equipment.

Nexans Celebrates Construction of Aurora Cable Installation Vessel

On October 15, 2019, Nexans hosted the grand block ceremony that represented a key step in the construction of its ground-breaking cable installation vessel, the ‘Nexans Aurora’. The vessel’s hull  is currently being built at the CRIST shipyard in Poland. Nexans Wins $113m Subsea Contract

French cable company Nexans said that  it has been awarded a full turnkey contract worth more than $113m  for the manufacturing, delivery and installation of 350 kV HVDC submarine cable in the Philippines.Nexans has been awarded a full turnkey contract for the submarine link of the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP) launched by National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).To optimise the delivery of the submarine cabling system for the MVIP to connect the three power grids of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao into one unified national grid, Nexans will leverage on its global manufacturing footprint.The 350 kV submarine MI cable will be manufactured in Nexans' Nippon High Voltage Cable Corporation plant in Futtsu, Japan as well as in Nexans Norway plant in Halden.

ST Engineering Profits Up, Despite Maritime Drag

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced that it registered higher year-on-year profits for its third quarter ended 30 September 2017 (3Q2017). Group revenue of $1.62b came in with higher Profit before tax (PBT) of $162.9m, up 53% from $106.6m, and higher Profit attributable to shareholders (Net Profit) of $128.4m, up 67% from $76.7m. Higher profits were largely due to the absence of the $61.1m one-off charge incurred in 3Q2016 for its Specialty Vehicle business in China.

ST Engineering Invests In Cyber Security

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced that its Corporate Venture Capital unit, ST Engineering Ventures Pte Ltd (ST Engineering Ventures) has made a Series B investment of $5.79m for a minority interest in Janus Technologies, Inc., an endpoint cyber security provider based in California. “This is the first investment by our Corporate Venture Capital unit in companies with cutting edge technologies or breakthrough innovations,” said Vincent Chong, President & CEO of ST Engineering. The Group has identified cyber security, along with robotics, autonomous technology, and data analytics as strategic capabilities that it will invest in to create long term value and growth.

ST Engineering Injects $66m into VT Systems

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced that it has injected US$66m (approximately S$89m) into the capital of its US Headquarters, Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), for the repayment of bank loans. This brings ST Engineering’s total investment in VT Systems to US$343.96m (approximately S$464m). Following the capital injection above, VT Systems has capitalised its outstanding loan balance of US$35.28m (approximately S$47m) and US$33.08m (approximately S$44m) in its subsidiaries, Vision Technologies Kinetics, Inc. and Vision Technologies Land Systems Inc respectively. Vision Technologies Land Systems has, in turn, capitalised its outstanding loan balance of US$33.08m (approximately S$44m) in its subsidiary, VT Hackney Inc.

VT Halter Launches Tug for Bouchard

VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), announces the launch of the M/V Frederick E. Bouchard, at its Moss Point Marine Shipyard Facility in Escatawpa, Mississippi on Thursday, March 31, 2016. M/V Frederick E. Bouchard is the second of two 6,000hp Twin Screw Articulated (ATB) tugs constructed for Bouchard Transportation Co. Inc. (Bouchard Transportation) under a two-vessel contract awarded to VT Halter Marine in August 2014. Both M/V Frederick E. Bouchard and the M/V Morton S. Bouchard Jr. measures, 130 feet by 38 feet by 22 feet, are classed by ABS as A1 Ocean Towing, Dual Mode ATB, USCG Subchapter C, and is equipped with an Intercon Coupler System.

Liquidation of PMB Malaysia Completed

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today informed that further to the announcement made on 27 August 2013, the members’ voluntary liquidation of its indirect wholly owned subsidiary, PMB Project Management Business Sdn Bhd (PMB Malaysia), has been completed. ST Engineering is an integrated engineering group providing solutions and services in the aerospace, electronics, land systems and marine sectors. The liquidation of PMB Malaysia is not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year. The Group reported revenue of S$6.54b in FY2014 and ranks among the largest companies listed on the Singapore Exchange.

ST Engineering Y-O-Y Profits Slip

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd  reported today its full year financial results ended 31 December 2014 (FY2014) with a Group revenue of $6.54b compared to $6.63b as reported for FY2013. Profit before tax (PBT) of $650.7m was $79m or 11% lower year-on-year compared to $729.7m, and Net Profit of $532.0m was $48.8m or 8% lower year-on-year compared to $580.8m. At the business sector level, revenue for the Aerospace sector was comparable at $2.06b, and PBT was down 11% to $283m from $319.4m reported for FY2013. The Electronics sector achieved higher PBT of $184m, up 8% compared to $170.3m in FY2013 on the back of comparable year-on-year revenue of $1.58b. The Land Systems sector posted comparable year-on-year revenue of $1.4b, and a lower PBT of $56.2m, down 50% from $111.8m in FY2013.

General Dynamics Wins MK46 Systems Contract

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) awarded General Dynamics Land Systems a $26.2 million contract for the production of MK46 Modification (Mod) 2 Gun Weapon Systems (GWS) for use on Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), and Zumwalt-class (DDG-1000) ships. General Dynamics Land Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). The MK46 30mm Naval Weapon System is an all-weather, day/night, fully stabilized weapon system. Its lightweight, modular and compact size makes it an ideal candidate for numerous anti-surface and anti-air defense applications. The systems family of turrets represents a balance of lethality, performance, reliability and versatility, and it is one of the most cost-effective medium-caliber weapon systems. General Dynamics has delivered 38 MK46 systems to the U.S.

The board of directors of General Dynamics has elected S. Daniel Johnson to be executive vice president, Information Systems and Technology, effective January 1, 2015, to succeed David K. Heebner, who has informed the company of his intention to retire on December 31, 2014. Johnson will also continue in his role as president of General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics. In announcing the board's action, Phebe N. ST Engineering Injects Capital in Brazilian Arm

ST Engineering 2Q 2014 Unaudited Results

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced today that the Group posted quarterly revenue of $1.59b for the second quarter ended 30 June 2014 (2Q2014), which is comparable with the prior year’s revenue in the same period. The Land Systems sector saw lower revenue due to fewer deliveries in its Automotive business group in the second quarter. The other three sectors - Aerospace, Electronics and Marine registered growth of between 6% and 12% year-on-year. In 2Q2014, all sectors except for the Electronics sector, recorded lower profit before tax (PBT) resulting in a 12% drop in Group PBT to $163.7m from $186.9m in the same period last year.

St Engineering's Land Systems Arm Inject Capital in Brazil

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced today that SDG Kinetics Pte. Ltd. (SDGK) and Autonomous Technology Pte Ltd (ATPL), wholly owned subsidiaries of its land systems arm, Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd (ST Kinetics), have injected BRL5,499,450 (approximately S$3.2m) and BRL550 (approximately S$318) respectively into the capital of LeeBoy Brazil Equipamentos De Construção Ltda. (LeeBoy Brazil), as working capital for LeeBoy Brazil’s operations in Brazil. This equity injection increases SDGK and ATPL’s total investment in LeeBoy Brazil to BRL28.5m (approximately S$15.7m). ST Kinetics has correspondingly injected approximately S$3.2m into the capital of SDGK as funding for SDGK’s capital injection into LeeBoy Brazil.

ST Engineering Injects Capital into Leeboy India

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced today that its land systems arm, Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd has injected S$4.2m (equivalent to INR200m) into its wholly owned subsidiary, SDG Kinetics Pte Ltd (SDGK), for flowthrough capital injection into LeeBoy India Construction Equipment Private Limited (LeeBoy India) to provide working capital for LeeBoy India’s operations in India. At the same time, SDGK has purchased shares worth INR9.4m (approximately S$0.2m), approximately 1.2% of LeeBoy India’s total share capital, from LeeBoy India’s management staff. The shares were purchased at the subscription price of INR10 (approximately S$0.21) per share in accordance with the terms of the management staff’s employment contracts.
