APM Terminals to Develop Container Terminal at Plaquemines Port

Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District announced it signed a letter of intent (LOI) with APM Terminals (APMT) to build a container terminal on the West Bank of Plaquemines Parish, La.Plaquemines Port will lease the land to APM under a 30-year agreement with extension options. Scania to Power Patriot's New CTV

Engine manufacturer Scania announced it has been selected by Patriot Offshore Maritime Services to power its new 27-meter aluminum crew transfer vessel (CTV), chartered by Vineyard Wind for support of the construction and management of its commercial offshore wind project. The CTV will be built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, Mass. for mid-2023 delivery. Based on an Incat Crowther catamaran design, it will be capable of carrying up to 24 technicians and personnel.

Offshore wind developer Vineyard Wind on Monday announced it has signed a contract to charter a crew transfer vessel (CTV) from Massachusetts-based marine transportation company Patriot Offshore Maritime Services.The 88.5-foot (27-meter) aluminum CTV will be built at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, Mass. for mid-2023 delivery. Sea Machines Forms Strategic Advisory Board

Tallink Charters Out Additional Vessel to COP26

Tallink Grupp announced it recently signed a charter agreement for its Latvian-flagged cruise vessel Romantika, which has also been hired to provide accommodation at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), taking place in Glasgow, Scotland on October 31– November 12.Several weeks ago, the company said it signed a charter agreement for its Tallinn-Helsinki route cruise vessel Silja Europa to provide accommodation services at the global climate conference in Glasgow from October 21 to November 14.

U.S. Judge Orders Resumption in Federal Drilling Auctions

A federal judge in Louisiana on Tuesday blocked the Biden administration's pause on oil and gas leasing on public lands and waters, dealing a setback to a key White House effort to address climate change.The order granted a preliminary injunction to Louisiana and 12 other states that sued Democratic President Joe Biden and the Interior Department over the freeze on new drilling auctions. Louisiana is a major hub for offshore oil and gas production.Biden paused the government's leasing auctions in January pending a review that is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

As the Executive Director for the Offshore Supply Vessel Dynamic Positioning Authority (OSVDPA), Aaron Smith is charged with managing the day-to-day operation of the Authority. Along with the OSVDPA Board of Directors and Technical Advisory Council (TAC), Aaron has helped to craft the Authority’s dynamic positioning operator (DPO) certification program. This includes ensuring that the program is ultimately accepted by the offshore energy industry, and its many international and domestic counterparts.

Aaron Smith Takes the Helm at OMSA

Aaron Smith has been appointed as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Offshore Marine Services Association, Inc. (OMSA), the national trade association representing the U.S.-flag offshore workboat industry. Smith’s appointment follows the resignation of Ben Billings, who has led OMSA since 2013. Smith has held various positions in government and public affairs. He has been instrumental in the development of OSVDPA, a dynamic positioning certification authority for the OSV industry. Prior to that, he served in Washington, D.C.

WOW at USMMA

The United States Merchant Marine Academy Hosts 7th Annual Women on the Water Conference. Last week, The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in conjunction with the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) hosted the 7th Annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference. The annual conference, which is hosted by a different U.S. maritime academy each year, brought together over 125 maritime professional mariners and maritime academy cadets. The three day conference began with opening remarks from Maritime Administrator Paul N. Jaenichen, Sr. He welcomed the audience of mostly women by thanking the attendees. Crews aboard two 25-foot Response Boat – Smalls, from Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay, Maryland, are to be seen here escorting the tugboats 'Honor' and 'Captain William Landry' near Sparrows Point, as they tow a section of the Midtown Tunnel that will connect Portsmouth with Norfolk, Virginia. The Coast Guard explains that the tunnel section is being towed down the Chesapeake Bay to the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, where it will await placement in the Elizabeth River this fall.

Port New Orleans Unveils New Logo

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans unveiled a new modern, streamlined logo today to kick-off the 6th annual Critical Commodities Conference. The rebranding effort represents the culmination of work of an internal committee consisting of staff from a variety of port departments and two members representing the Board of Commissioners. Port officials advertised nationally for a design firm and ultimately selected Edelman – the world’s largest public relations firm – to design the new brand.

Eastern Launches Second Vessel for Bravante

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. announced the christening and launching of the M/V Bravante VI for Boldini S.A., Bravante Group of Brazil. This is the second vessel in a series of five. The event was held on August 5, 2013 at Eastern’s Nelson Street Facility with hundreds of Eastern’s Employees and Guests. Attending from Bravante were Renato and Regina Nascimento, Nuno Neves and Rubia Amaral, William Grutter, Cristiana Marsillac and Luis Harduim along with several members that traveled from Brazil witnessing the launch of the second of five Platform Supply Vessels under contract with Eastern.

Coast Guard Taps Landry for New Post

Rear Admiral Mary E. Landry, USCG retired, has been named the Director, Incident Management and Preparedness Policy, U.S. Coast Guard. In this capacity, Ms. Landry will establish, develop, and implement policies, strategies and goals to improve all hazards incident management with our interagency partners. Ms. retiring in 2011 at the rank of Rear Admiral. She has over 30 years of experience in incident management and preparedness serving, most notably, as the Commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District and as the Director of Governmental and Public Affairs. Ms. Landry received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Buffalo, Master of Arts in Management from Webster University, and a second Master of Arts in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island.

GSSC Shipfitter Boot Camp Produces 18 for Industry

12 Graduate from GSSC Shipfitter Boot Camp and Have Jobs Waiting for Them. In November 2011, 18 individuals started an intensive 10-week shipfitter boot camp that was developed by the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC) to prepare workers for entry-level employment in the maritime industry. Before an invitation was extended to participate in the training program, candidates completed prequalification activities that included drug testing, WorkKeys® assessments, industry presentations, shipyard tours, and interviews. On Thursday, March 1, the 12 individuals who successfully completed the pilot program participated in a graduation ceremony hosted by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) at its Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center (AMTC) in Gulfport, Mississippi.

RADM Mary Landry to Keynote WISTA Luncheon

WISTA USA President Jeanne M. Grasso said that Rear Admiral (RADM) Mary Landry (United States Coast Guard (USCG) Retired), the Federal On-Scene Coordinator during the first days of the Deepwater Horizon incident, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s WISTA luncheon held on March 19th at the beginning of the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2012 conference.
