Maryland Governor Urges Congress to Fund Bridge Rebuild

With efforts underway to clean up thousands of tons of steel debris from the collapsed bridge in Baltimore's harbor, Maryland Governor Wes Moore on Sunday urged Republicans to work with Democrats to approve the federal funding needed for rebuilding the bridge and to get the port economy back on its feet.Baltimore's Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed early on Tuesday morning, killing six road workers, when a container ship nearly the size of the Eiffel Tower lost power and crashed into a support pylon.

Hijacked Ship Off Somalia Fuels Fears Pirates Back in Red Sea Waters

A merchant ship sailing off Somalia has been hijacked by unknown raiders, Spain's defence ministry said on Tuesday, fuelling fears pirates are returning to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea waters already plagued by a surge in attacks on shipping.A Spanish warship rushed to check on the Maltese-flagged vessel Ruen on Friday after reports it had been hijacked. It "has been under piracy (control) since the morning of Dec. 14," the ministry said in a statement, in its first confirmation of the ship's fate."The MV Ruen has indeed been hijacked.

Inmarsat to Roll Out IoT Solution to More than 60 Zamil Offshore Vessels

Inmarsat, a mobile satellite communications services provider, will roll out an Internet-of-Things (IoT) solution to more than 60 of Saudi-based Zamil Offshore's vessels in the Gulf area.The solution - powered by Fleet Connect and Fleet Data delivered through Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress - will allow Zamil to identify, trial and select the best solutions to meet vessel performance expectations set by its charterer, Saudi Aramco. The news of the deal between Inmarsat and Zamil Offshore follows a successful trial on the fleet’s anchor tug, Zamil 57.

World's First: Wartsila Intros Hybrid Retrofit

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation.The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. Kongsberg Expands Louisiana Office, Training Facility

Kongsberg Maritime has purchased approximately 5.2 acres for new construction on an 82,980 sq ft office and training facility. Construction on the James Business Park property located on James Drive East in St. Rose, Louisiana is scheduled to begin this spring. Kongsberg Maritime moved its service department from Houston to Louisiana in 2003 establishing a small office in James Business Park with nine full-time employees. Growing together with local customers, the Louisiana office now has 110 employees occupying 35,000 sq ft of leased office space.

MHSCo Breaks Ground on Navy Maintenance Facilities

The Maritime Helicopter Support Company (MHSCo), a Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin joint venture company, today broke ground to build the maintenance and warehouse facilities that will provide Through Life Support logistics services for the Royal Australian Navy's new fleet of 24 MH-60R SEAHAWK helicopters. Once completed in early 2015, the two buildings, totaling more than 11,400 square meters (120,000 square feet), will house as many as 120 personnel with the knowledge and ability to keep the fleet in peak flight readiness during its estimated 30-year lifespan. "Excavation and construction of these Through Life Support buildings begin an important chapter for the long-term readiness of Australia's most sophisticated maritime helicopter," said Rod Skotty, President of MHSCo.

Australia Begins Drawdown of Philippines Recovery Ops

HMAS Tobruk has completed its mission in the Philippines and is returning to Australia with a load of Army engineer machinery, vehicles and 35 Army personnel. A small Recovery Support Force of 65 combat engineers, tradesmen and support personnel, mostly from Townsville’s 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, will remain in Ormoc for a further week to continue clean-up and repair tasks coordinated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Government. Commander of Joint Task Force 630 Lieutenant Colonel Rod Lang said the departing engineers and HMAS Tobruk’s crew had achieved their mission to help with the Philippines’ recovery.

Australian Warship Arrives to Support Philippine Recovery

'HMAS Tobruk' has arrived to commence recovery support operations in the Ormoc region of Leyte Island to assist the Philippines government repair the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan. The warship sailed from Townsville with a Recovery Support Force onboard, and is now disembarking Army personnel from Townsville’s 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment by landing craft. The engineers will commence a range of tasks including road clearing and quick impact tasks such as debris clean-up in public areas.

New Bridge Simulator For Mexican Coastal and Port Development

A new Multi-Purpose Kongsberg Maritime Polaris ship’s bridge simulator has become a key coastal and port development resource for The Instituto Mexicano del Transporte (IMT) following the opening of its new research facility in August 2013. Based in Queretaro, Mexico, IMT is the leading Research Center for Ports and Coasts in Mexico. The organization is using its new Polaris simulator, which was ordered in April 2013, within its maritime research, development and project planning activities.

Jones Lang LaSalle is to market Macalloy Port Terminal in Charleston, SC for private investors and operators. The privately-owned, 115-acre Macalloy Intermodal Terminal in North Charleston is being developed to complement South Carolina’s port system, including the adjacent future Navy Base terminal currently being developed and operated by the SCSPA. Macalloy Terminal offers bulk material maritime solutions and is designed for mixed-use purposes, including break-bulk, RO/RO, manufacturing, general cargo and raw material handling.

The issue of the skills gap in the marine sector is to come under the spotlight as part of London International Shipping Week 2013 when the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and specialist engineering recruitment agency Matchtech will hold an invitation only roundtable to discuss and debate the topic. AMP Approves New Container Terminal

Panama Maritime Authority Approves New Container Shipping Terminal; Panama Colón Container Port designed to complement newly expanded Panama Canal and rising cargo volumes in Panama. The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) has granted permits to a private development group for the construction and operation of a new container terminal to be built at the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal. Jones Lang LaSalle is acting as development advisor to the project consortium. With an estimated construction value exceeding $USD 600 million, the Panama Colón Container Port (PCCP) is expected to become one of the largest private maritime infrastructure projects in Panama, and the first terminal to be built on freehold land.
